2014 Scholarships for Stephen T. Badin High School Students
As you read the scholarship descriptions, you will notice that many scholarships have been established in memory of
lost loved ones. Friends and family members have established these scholarships and written the criteria to honor
those special people who touched the lives of so many. Please take your time as you read the criteria and get to
know about them. ONLY apply for those scholarships for which you meet the criteria. Also, please make sure you
include all documents that are requested for specific scholarships. Note: Awards may vary based on number of applicants
and funds available.
Joseph C. Abbott Memorial Scholarship
Minerva and Joe Abbott established this fund to provide a scholarship to a high school student who plans to attend
Miami University and major in business. Before his retirement in 1995, Mr. Abbott was Vice President and General
Manager of Mosler, Inc. He was a well-known and respected community leader who served on the boards of many
organizations, including the Hamilton Community Foundation. He was elected to the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame
in 1996, just months before his death. The Abbott’s three daughters are Paula Glander, Linda DiBenedetto and Nancy
Lee.

Elizabeth V. Allen Memorial Scholarship
Although Miss Allen was born in Vermont, she made her home in Hamilton during the last 15 years of her life. Miss
Allen was a graduate of Skidmore College, with a Master of Science from Columbia University. She was very interested
in helping those in the community who were less fortunate. At the time of her death, this scholarship was established by
her friends and family in her memory.

Pauline E. Antenen Memorial Scholarship
This fund was created by Mrs. Antenen’s family in her memory. The scholarship is for a student who will continue to
study music in college. Mrs. Antenen was an accomplished vocalist and was very well-known in local musical circles.

Bill Arnold Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by the Board of Directors of the West Side Little League in memory of Bill Arnold to offer
scholarships for players who participate in the West Side Little League. Bill was involved with the West Side Little
League most of his life as a player, coach, manager and Board member. He was instrumental in founding the
Challenger League for players with disabilities. Preference: student who participated in baseball.
Award: $500 for one year – Merit Based
Carl P. and Ellen A. Bartels Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established through a bequest from Carl P. Bartels. His wish was to provide scholarships for graduating
students from Hamilton High and Badin High Schools enrolling in a college engineering program. Mr. Bartels served as
a Trustee of the Foundation.
Award: $1,000 for one year - Based on Need $$$
Bast-Connelly Memorial Merit Scholarship
The Foundation received a gift from the estate of Mrs. Mary Virginia Bast-Connelly. This gift is to be used for a
scholarship for deserving academic students, regardless of financial need.

Isabel Beardsley Memorial Scholarship
Miss Beardsley left the major portion of her estate to the Hamilton Community Foundation to establish an unrestricted
fund to benefit the community and a scholarship fund to encourage young people to enter careers in social service –
caring field of study. Miss Beardsley was the first professional Social Service Director in Hamilton. She maintained a
lifelong concern for her city and generously supported many organizations, including the Front Street Presbyterian
Church. Miss Beardsley also donated heirloom silver pieces and furniture to the Lane-Hooven House.
Award: $2,500 per year for four years – Merit Based
David L. & Margery Beckett Belew Merit Scholarship
Consistent with their lifelong interest in music, the Belews established their scholarship to encourage musically talented
young people who want to pursue a career in music. Their scholarship is awarded to a senior who has demonstrated
outstanding musical ability, and who has shared those talents with the school and the community. The Belews have two
children, Guy Beckett Belew and Sally Conrad Streeter, and six grandchildren. Mr. Belew served two terms as President
of the Board of Trustees (1970-71, 1999-2001) and now serves as Trustee Emeritus at the Foundation.
Award: $1,000 for one year – Merit Based
Esther Benzing Memorial Scholarship
Mrs. Benzing, an esteemed area historian and author, established this scholarship fund for the benefit of area high
school seniors. The recipient must be a student interested in pursuing additional educational opportunities in the field of
agriculture. Mrs. Benzing had a history of volunteering her time for many worthwhile projects.
Award: $500 for one year - Based on Need $$$
Elizabeth R. Betten Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by Cornelius Betten in memory of his wife, Elizabeth. Additional contributions were made in
1999, at the death of his daughter, Mary Betten Katz. Mr. Betten is a retired research chemist with Champion
International.

William J. Boehm Foundation - Connector Manufacturing Company Scholarship
William J. Boehm, Chairman, Connector Manufacturing Company, established this fund to support the children of
Connector employees in their pursuit of obtaining a college education. Mr. Boehm passed away March 3, 2012.
Scholarships are awarded to applicants who meet the award criteria of academic achievement, citizenship, leadership
qualities, extracurricular activities and employment records. Student must have a parent currently employed at
Connector Manufacturing Co. and maintain a 3.0GPA.
Award: $3,000 per year for four years – Merit Based
Mr. and Mrs. W. Otis Briggs Scholarship
This fund was created by the Board of Trustees in honor of Mr. Briggs’ retirement as Executive Director of the Hamilton
Community Foundation. Additional funds were added at Mr. Briggs’ death in 1995. The fund offers a scholarship to a
student planning to attend the Hamilton campus of Miami University and majoring in human care services (nursing,
social sciences, etc.).
Mr. Briggs, a Founder and Trustee of the Hamilton Community Foundation, has been described as the “Architect of the
Foundation.” He was its first Executive Director and served until his retirement in 1980. He was also the Executive
Director of the United Way of Hamilton from 1943 to 1976. His second wife, Virginia, retired in 1981 after 19 years with
United Way. She is an active volunteer for service organizations and projects in our community. Otis had two sons,
Wayne Briggs and Lloyd Briggs, two daughters, Judy Athey and Marty Comb, and a stepson, J.D. White.

Barbara Beeler Bronson Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established in memory of Mrs. Bronson by her family to provide a scholarship for a senior from Hamilton
High or Badin High Schools planning to attend Miami University. Mrs. Bronson was a member of the Westover Services
Guild, serving as president for many years. She served 14 years on the Westover Board of Directors. She married
Robert Malcolm Bronson and had one son, Malcolm H. Bronson. Mrs. Bronson passed away on September 11, 1994.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Connelly Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established from the estate of Mrs. Mary Virginia Connelly to be used for a scholarship for
deserving students who need assistance in acquiring their educations regardless of financial need. Mr. Richard
Connelly wrote for the Journal-News. Mrs. Connelly passed away October 28, 1992.
Award: $2,500 for one year – Merit Based
Charles Dees, Delores Dees Kees and Bernice Dees Cullinan Award
This fund was established by the family of Charles Dees. He was born in Hamilton and employed by Mosler Safe
Company in the development of the drive-in depository system for banks. Charles traveled throughout the
United States installing this equipment. Charles married his high school sweetheart, Owanna, in 1945 and they had
three children, Patricia, Stephen and Rebecca. He passed away in March 2005.
Delores Dees Kees resided in Brookville, Indiana, after being born in Hamilton and having lived in Ross.
She attended Ross schools, Miami University and worked as an LPN in the healthcare industry. She was a member of
the Morgan Township Historical Society. She has two daughters, Kathy Nunier and Noreen Northness. Delores passed
away in April 2006.
Bernice E. Cullinan, a resident of New York, is a renowned author of children’s literature. She has written over 30 books
on literature for classroom teachers and librarians. She was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame and The Ohio State
University Hall of Fame, and selected as the recipient of the Arbuthnot Award for Outstanding Teacher of Children’s
Literature.
This scholarship will be awarded to a resident of Morgan Township attending Badin, Harrison or Ross High Schools and
majoring in education to become a teacher.

Sanford Eaffy Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by a bequest from the estate of Sanford Eaffy. The fund provides scholarships for deserving
minority students planning to attend Miami University Hamilton. Mr. Eaffy was a partner with William Murstein in the
ownership and operation of Wilmurs Department Store. Student must be a Hamilton resident.
Award: $2,000 for one year - Based on Need $$$
David R. and Dorothy S. Eichel Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established from the estate of Mr. Eichel for the higher education of deserving children in our area. Mr.
Eichel was an engineer at Champion International. He and his wife, Dorothy, felt strongly that all children should have a
chance to obtain a college degree. Student must be a Hamilton resident.

Robert and Cora Fiehrer Scholarship
This fund was established by Bob and Cora Fiehrer to provide a scholarship for a student planning post-secondary
training to obtain either an associate degree or a certificate that will prepare them for a career in the field of their choice.
Robert Fiehrer is the owner of Fiehrer Motors, Inc. He and his wife, Cora, have three children, Thomas and Daniel
Fiehrer, and Juliet Klepec.

Kenneth V. Getz Memorial Scholarship
This fund, established by friends and family in memory of Kenneth Getz, provides a scholarship to an area high school
senior planning to major in finance. Mr. Getz was employed at First National Bank of Southwestern Ohio. Ken and his
wife, Diane, had four children, Doug, Kevin, David and Krissy Hoffman.
Award: $1,500 for one year - Based on Need $$$
Austin and Lois Gleason Scholarship
This fund was created by Austin and Lois Gleason to award a scholarship to an outstanding student athlete
Mr. Gleason is a retired pharmacist and Mrs. Gleason taught school in the Fairfield School District. The Gleasons are
the parents of two children, Austin W. Gleason, Jr. (Wes), and Melanie Joy Farler.
Award: $1,000 for one year – Merit Based
Fannie Gray Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the estate of Fannie Gray to benefit African-American students excelling in
academic courses and planning to attend college.
Award: $500 for one year - Merit Based
Hamilton Caster & Mfg. Company Scholarship
This fund was created to support the educational needs of Badin High School graduating seniors.
Award: $1,500 for one year – Based on Need $$$
Hamilton Junior Women’s League Scholarship
The Hamilton Junior Women's League was organized in 1946 and the Auxiliary wa founded in 1959. These
organizations have a proud history of community service, as well as making charitable contributions to local non-profits
with proceeds from their annual Holiday Ball.
This fund was established by the Club to award a scholarship to a student graduating from Hamilton High School or
Badin High School. Preference will be given to a female student demonstrating financial need, displaying merit in
school work, and involvement in school and community activities.

Hamilton Rotary Scholarship
This scholarship is funded by the activities and members of our local Rotary Club. This scholarship supports students
from Hamilton High School and Badin High School who want to attend college and are active in their community and
school. Students must live in Hamilton City limits.
Award: $2,000 for one year - Based on Need $$$
Davene Harris Memorial Scholarship
The family and friends of Davene Harris wished to honor her memory with a scholarship for a senior with financial need
and pursuing higher education. Mrs. Harris served in the Hamilton City Schools for 27 years in various capacities from
Library Aide to Building Secretary. She left a legacy of faith, dedication and integrity to all who knew her. She never
missed an opportunity to encourage others, especially students. The scholarship is intended to continue this
encouragement by assisting young people who have done the best they could academically and are intent on realizing
their full potential and purpose.
Davene devoted most of her time to her church, Immanuel Baptist, where she was involved as a deaconess and
Sunday school teacher. Her other favorite past-time was her grandchildren. Mrs. Harris was the wife of Lonnie Ray
Harris and the mother of Jeff Harris and Michelle Harris Fall.

William L. and Linda M. Hartford Scholarship
This fund, offering a scholarship to a graduating senior, was established by Star Bank (now U.S. Bank) in honor of Bill’s
retirement as Vice President in the Commercial Loan Department. Mr. Hartford has served on many boards, including
United Way, Rotary, Hamilton Chamber of Commerce and the Hamilton Community Foundation. He and his wife, Linda,
have three children, Christopher, Peter and Scott. Mr. Hartford was a former Trustee and past President (1980-81) of
the Foundation.
Award: $500 per year for four years - Based on Need $$$
Joseph E. and Marguerite L. Hartford Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by the Hartford family in memory of their parents. This scholarship fund supports a
graduating senior from Hamilton or Badin High School who attends the Front Street Presbyterian Church.

Walter and Marion Boyd Havighurst Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by the estate of Mr. Havighurst. Mr. Havighurst was a Miami University professor emeritus,
an author, English teacher and Miami history buff who devoted his career and much of his life to the Oxford school.
Walter lived in Oxford for more than 60 years before he passed away at age 92. Mrs. Havighurst was a poet, novelist,
nature lover and English department colleague. She passed away in 1974. This scholarship is designated for a student
planning to attend Miami University.

Ned and Elizabeth Hitchcock Memorial Scholarship
To honor Ned’s retirement as President and CEO of Second National Bank (now U.S. Bank), this fund was started to
assist deserving students who showed an interest in the field of business and finance. During his lifetime, Ned was
active in many community organizations, including serving on boards of Lane Public Library, the Children’s Home and
Hughes Hospital. He and his wife, Elizabeth, are the parents of three children, Ned Hitchcock II, Neal Hitchcock and
Elizabeth Hoover. Mr. Hitchock passed away in 1999 and Mrs. Hitchcock passed away August 30, 2009.

John A. and Corrinne H. Hock Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established through the Hock’s estates. The income from this fund is distributed annually to provide
scholarships to a graduating student from Hamilton High and Badin High School who plans to major in education.

Hogan Field Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the Hogan family in honor of the Hogan Field airport. This was the name given to
Hamilton's airport, which was owned and operated by the Hogan brothers, Joe, Bernie, Art and Bill for over 50 years,
beginning in 1933. The airport was designed to be a full service operation including aircraft maintenance and repair, air
charter, flight and G.I. training. The Hogan brothers were nationally honored as aviation pioneers at the Dayton Air Fair.
The airport built and developed by the Hogan family and friends, is an ultra-modern facility which today is named the
Butler County Regional Airport-Hogan Field. This scholarship is named in memory of the Hogan brothers and is
awarded to a student pursuing post-secondary education.

Jane E. Howe Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by friends and family of Miss Howe to provide a nursing scholarship for an area student.
Miss Howe graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing in 1935. She worked as medical secretary
for Dr. James Carr, served on Western College Board and was involved with Westover Retirement Community.

Jacque & Linda Huber Scholarship
This scholarship fund supports students from Hamilton, Badin or Fairfield High Schools, who exhibit financial need and
are interested in obtaining a college education. Jacque Huber is retired from Southwestern Ohio Steel as President and
CEO. He and Linda have a number of charitable interests including Lindenwald United Methodist Church and the
University of Notre Dame. They are the parents of four children, Brian, Kathy, Kara and Carla.

Lamont B. Jacobs Orthodontic Merit Scholarship
This fund was established by Dr. Jacobs to support students pursuing a degree in the dental field.
Award: $2,000 for one year – Merit Based
Dr. Edward T. & Margaret A. Keating Memorial Scholarship
The Dr. Edward T. and Margaret A. Keating Memorial Scholarship was established by their family and friends to honor
their memory with a scholarship for a Badin graduate pursuing a career in the medical field.
Dr. Keating practiced medicine in the Hamilton area for 45 years. In addition to his practice, he served the community as
a member of the Butler County, Ohio, and American Medical Association as well as serving as the first Medical Director
of Schroeder Manor. He was especially proud of his Irish heritage and was a member of the Friendly Sons of Patrick for
over 50 years. Mrs. Keating was a graduate of the Mercy School of Nursing. She was a member of the Mercy School
Nursing Alumni, Charter Member of the Butler County Medical Auxiliary, International Federation of Catholic Alumni and
the Schroeder Manor and Mercy Hospital Guilds. She was a nurse at Mercy Hospital until the birth of her children and
then became a full-time homemaker. Dr. and Mrs. Keating are the parents of Kathy Walsh, Ed Keating, Jr., Patty
Soriano and Joe Keating.

Dr. & Mrs. Edward Kezur Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established in memory of Dr.& Mrs. Edward Kezur. Dr. Kezur was a retired pioneer in the field of
psychology as well as a well-known artist. Both he and his wife were interested in education and helping others.
This scholarship is offered to a Hamilton or Badin High School student pursing a degree in the caring fields of medicine,
therapy or social work.
Award: $2,500 for one year – Merit Based
Susan Kezur Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established in memory of Dr. Edward and Isabel Kezur’s mentally and physically impaired daughter,
Susan, to offer scholarships to students who are planning to work with individuals with disabilities.
Award: $3,000 for one year - Based on Need $$$
Lang Educational Scholarship
The Louise J. Lang Educational Fund was created to support students undertaking educational endeavors in the
healthcare profession. Louise graduated from Norwood High School and earned her degree from the University of
Cincinnati. She worked as an administrative assistant in the laboratories of Hamilton Mercy Hospital for 30 years
and set up the laboratories at Fairfield Mercy Hospital. Lousie worked as a research consultant for Ortho
Pharmaceutical Co. where she was instrumental in developing bloodbanking and pregnancy testing. Her work was
published in the Journal of OB/GYN. Later works were published in various medical journals. Louise was a member
of the Altrusa Club International, past president of the Cooperative Services League of Hamilton, member of the
Board of Trustees for Senior Citizens and the Hamilton Altrusa Club. During her years of service, she helped create
Hospice of Miami Valley. Louise Lang passed away on December 11, 2010.

Shirley M. Leppert Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established in memory of Shirley Leppert, a very beloved teacher at the Presbyterian Preschool. This
scholarship is for students with physical disabilities who plan to attend college. Awards are Based on Need $$$ and
merit. Applicants must be a resident of Hamilton. Shirley was a dedicated member of “Sallies,” the Salvation Army
Auxiliary Club. She also was a Meals on Wheels driver. An avid traveler, she traveled around the world three times
visiting 55 foreign countries. She also enjoyed playing bridge. Shirley was the wife of Harold and mother of two sons,
Gregory and David.

Lindenwald - Hamilton Kiwanis Club Scholarship
This scholarship is funded by the activities and members of our local Kiwanis. This scholarship supports students from
Hamilton High School and Badin High School that want to attend college.

Harry Lingal Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by a bequest from the estate of Mr. Lingal, who was a research engineer with Mosler Safe
Company. The scholarship benefits a student majoring in engineering.

Robert R. Lippert Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established in memory of Bob Lippert, former president of Hamilton Caster and
Manufacturing Company. Bob, who passed away in 2004, spent most of his working career at Hamilton Caster, a
company founded by his grandfather in 1907. In 2002, Bob wrote poignantly about the community he grew to know,
“Mary and I have never resided in Hamilton, but over the years, we became acquainted with a number of fine
Hamiltonians who believed in giving back. By following their example, we hope we can help meet some of the

Donald and Kathryn Litzelfelner Memorial Scholarship
Donald and Kathryn Litzelfelner established this fund to carry out their strong belief in the value of education and their
conviction that every person who wants a college education should have the opportunity to earn one. Donald passed
away in 1995. Mr. Litzelfelner was the former CEO of Star Bank (now U.S. Bank). Kathryn passed away in July of
2011. Mrs. Litzelfelner was a retired assistant principal of Hamilton High School. Both served on the Board of
Trustees of Westover Retirement Home. Their five children are Charlotte Root, Frank A. Hunold, Jr., Joseph F.
Hunold, Betsy Anderson and Kathryn Horton. This scholarship is to be awarded to a resident of Hamilton who is
planning to attend Miami University and pursue a four year degree.

Manitsas Health Services Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established by Mrs. William Wolf in honor of Dr. Manitsas and is given to a deserving
student who is majoring in a health science field. Dr. Manitsas is a leading physician in Hamilton whose practice deals
with cardiovascular diseases. Preference: A student majoring in higher mathematics or sciences

Matandy Steel and Metal Products Scholarship
This fund was created by the employees of Matandy Steel in honor of the company’s owner, Frank C. Pfirman, for the
purpose of offering student scholarships. Frank founded Matandy in 1987, first working out of a bedroom in his
parents’ home. His contributions to the community are many including his sponsorship of youth soccer, the Boy
Scouts, the YMCA and Badin High School.

George C. & Freida B. McCandless Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by George C. and Frieda B. McCandless. Mrs. McCandless was Vice Mayor of Hamilton,
an officer in state and local mental health organizations, President of the League of Women Voters, and Chairman of
the United Way Planning Division. George C. McCandless was a former state senator and had been honored by the
Butler County Bar Association for his 50 years of service as a lawyer. At Mr. McCandless' death in 1989, he
requested that a scholarship be given in both their names. Mr. McCandless had one daughter, Sara Curryer Pringle.

Ira and Zenaid Millikin Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by Julia Millikin Rossiter, in memory of her parents, Ira and Zenaid Millikin. The fund is to
provide scholarships for students residing in Hamilton.

Daniel Monnin Memorial Scholarship
Steve and Susan Monnin created this scholarship in memory of their beloved son, Daniel. Daniel was a loyal friend,
employee, brother and son; he had an intensity to have fun and live life to its fullest. He worked hard in college and at
the police academy setting goals he was determined to meet. He pushed himself as well as encouraged others to
achieve their dreams and accomplish their goals. Especially those who weren’t “expected” to do well.
Daniel was also very involved in the baseball community of Hamilton. This merit-based scholarship supports a
Hamilton or Badin High School graduating senior with a preference to a student playing softball or baseball at
Hamilton High School who also participated in the West Side Little League. **NOTE: This scholarship requires an
additional essay that describes how you push yourself to meet your goals as well as how you encourage others to do
the same.

Mallory K. Naab Memorial Fine Arts Scholarship
This scholarship was established following the death of Mallory K. Naab in a tragic automobile accident in November
of 2002. Mallory was a multi-talented 16-year-old. She was a singer, thespian, adept in drama and choreography, a
lyricist, writer and student leader. She sang in several church choirs and the concert choir at her school, Ursuline
Academy. Her many activities included the Hamilton Youth Commission and the Encore Theatre group. This fund
provides a scholarship for a graduate of Ursuline Academy, Badin High School or Hamilton High School, attending
college and majoring in the fine arts.

Elizabeth Wente Newkirk Memorial Scholarship
The Newkirk family established this fund in memory Mrs. Newkirk, a dedicated community volunteer for many
organizations. Mrs. Newkirk founded the Volunteer Service Bureau and helped to establish the Day Care Center at
Pilgrim Baptist Church. She served as a Board Member for the Cincinnati Preservation Society, volunteered at the
Heritage Museum in Sharon Woods, and supported many animal, environmental and preservation organizations.
Mrs. Newkirk passed away on May 25, 2002. This scholarship was established to support a student pursing a degree
in early childhood education.

Howard R. & Eva M. Ottman Memorial Scholarship
Established through the estate of Eva Ottman, this fund reflects Howard and Eva Ottman’s desire to support a young
person who is trying, through his or her education, to help make the world a better place. Howard and Eva were
owners of Howard’s Candy Kitchen in Hamilton for 20 years. Their lives revolved around St. John’s Church, their
business and their friends. They anonymously supported various charities and individuals and felt blessed by their
desire to help others in need. Preference: A student planning to major in social work, medical field, or other field
for the betterment of mankind.

Parrish Family Scholarship
The Parrish Family established this scholarship fund to support students with financial need wishing to continue their
education after high school.

Pat Pendergest Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Rita Pendergest and the children of Pat Pendergest in his memory. The
scholarship is to be used for a Badin High School senior planning to attend college who played tennis, baseball or
softball during high school. Pat Pendergest was a sales representative who was active in Lindenwald baseball and the
K of C. He enjoyed watching sports and playing tennis. He is the father of seven children, Kevin, Mary Peters, Kathy,
Mike, John, Beth McIntosh and Brian.

James E. Paulus Memorial Scholarship Fund
After a short battle with cancer, Jim Paulus passed away on April 11, 2012. This scholarship fund was established to
continue his legacy of supporting education and giving back to the community.
Jim was a special person who gave unselfishly to the community for many years through his leadership roles on many
boards of area organizations. He was the Executive Director of the Butler County Alcoholism Council and the Director
of Planning and Development for Fort Hamilton Hospital. He served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of
the Butler County United Way and was on the board at the Fitton Center for the Creative Arts. His last service to our
community was as Outreach Coordinator for Miami University Hamilton campus. Jim was a lifelong member of Saint
Peter in Chains Catholic Church and served on the parish council for many years. He was an active member and past
president of Hamilton Rotary Club. Jim served as a member for the Hamilton Community Foundation Scholarship
Committee and on the board of the Emergency Money Fund and the Hamilton Vision Commission. He was past
chairman of Hamilton Arts Feasibility Study, Hamilton Celebrates Education Committee, Hamilton Schools Business
Advisory Council and Elementary School Site Selection and Redistricting Committee.
His support of education will continue on through this scholarship fund that will provide merit based scholarships to
graduating students from Hamilton High School or Badin High School.

Alberta Pratt Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established by Miss Pratt with the hope of helping others who intend to enter a healthrelated profession. Miss Pratt was an Ohio University graduate with a nursing degree. She was employed in the
Admitting Department of Mercy Hospital Hamilton for eight years. She started the Hamilton Blood Bank, which she
operated for 14 years. In addition, Miss Pratt owned and operated the Hamilton Telephone Answering Service for 17
years. She passed away on June 19, 1993, at the age of 83.

Herbert T. Randall Memorial Scholarship
This was the first scholarship fund established at the Hamilton Community Foundation. The fund offers scholarships
to engineering majors attending the University of Cincinnati in the Cooperative Engineering Degree Program. Mr.
Randall was the grandson of Peter G. Thompson, the Founder of Champion Papers. He was the Vice President of
Research and Engineering at Champion International Paper until his retirement in 1959. After his retirement, he
devoted himself to cancer research and travel. Mr. Randall was a former Trustee of the Foundation. He and his wife,
Olive, shared many community interests and enjoyed traveling together until Mr. Randall’s death in 1986. Olive
passed away September 6, 2010. Their daughters are Mary Belle Randall Rawlings and Catherine Randall Beaty.

Mr. & Mrs. Joseph H. Reichel & Miss Thelma E. Reichel Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established in memory of the Reichel family by Miss Thelma E. Reichel to provide a scholarship for a
student with financial need. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Reichel owned the Reichel Office Supply for 20 years. Mr. Reichel
passed away in 1983 and his sister, Thelma, passed away in 1996. Mrs. Reichel died in 2006.

Frederick A. & Rosemary Reister Memorial Scholarship
This fund was started by Rosemary Reister, family and friends, in memory of Fred. He was a Founder, former
President (1957-58) and Trustee of the Foundation. Mr. Reister was an attorney with Millikin and Fitton Law Firm and
he served on various boards and was a civic leader. This scholarship is for Hamilton and Badin High School students
with financial need who are involved in extracurricular and community activities.

Vernon & Louise Roden Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established as a scholarship fund by Mrs. Roden in memory of her husband, Vernon. Dr. Roden was a
medical doctor and Louise a retired school counselor. This scholarship is to benefit high school seniors planning to
obtain a degree from a two-year technical school or a four-year accredited university. Criteria for selection are based
on the student's ambition and motivation, as well as academic achievement and financial need. NOTE: Also, to be
eligible for this scholarship, in addition to the general Foundation scholarship essay, you must also include in your l
essay information describing a hardship that you were able to overcome.

Katherine Rumph Scholarship
This fund was created in 1993 as a scholarship fund by Mrs. Rumph, a member of the Mt. Zion Temple Church and a
volunteer tutor. Her children are Christine Moore (deceased), Denise Rumph-Johnson and La-juanna Walker. This
scholarship is based on financial need, with preference given to a minority student from either Hamilton High or Badin
High School.

Madge Shaper Schaeuble Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established from the estate of Mrs. Schaeuble as a scholarship for students majoring in mathematics or
related fields (not pre-med). Mrs. Schaeuble taught math and physics in Hamilton schools from 1929 to 1978. She
was also a talented violinist, pianist, organist and vocalist. Mrs. Schaeuble was active in many organizations. She died
on July 26, 1993, at the age of 84.

Donald Shilt Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1995 by Southwestern Ohio Steel, now MISA Metals, Inc., in memory of their employee Donald Shilt,
this scholarship supports students wishing to further their education after high school. The student must have a 3.0
GPA and maintain this throughout college. The student must have participated in service to their school and
community throughout high school as well as maintained their academics.
Award: $3,000 per year for four years – Merit Based
Donald & Millicent Schirmer Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. Schirmer to support educational opportunities for young people attending
Miami University. In addition to many other community involvements, Donald Schirmer was the former President and
partner of the Permanent Savings and Loan and President of the Butler County Commissioners for 12 years. He and
his wife of 50 years, Millicent, are the parents of three children, Donna S. Seidel, Sue S. Albrecht and Dave H.
Schirmer. Mr. Schirmer passed away on November 23, 1996. Mrs. Schirmer passed away March 27, 2008.

Dr. Karl J. Schmitter Memorial Scholarship
This fund was created at the death of Dr. Karl J. Schmitter, by his parents, Dr. Karl L. and Mary Alice Schmitter, to
provide a scholarship for a high school senior planning to major in either physical therapy or occupational therapy.

Ferdinand Schwenn & Margaret K. Turnbull Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by Margaret Turnbull, granddaughter of Mr. Schwenn. Ferdinand Schwenn was the founder
of the Robinson Schwenn Department Store, which was located on High Street for many years. This scholarship is
awarded to a student attending Miami University.

James I. Scott, Sr. Memorial Scholarship
This fund, which honors the memory of James I. Scott, father of Dr. James I. Scott, Jr., of Hamilton, offers a
scholarship for seniors at Hamilton High and Badin High Schools. Mr. Scott was an executive officer for the Ohio
Casualty Insurance Company for 40 years and had been very active in state and national insurance affairs. Mr. Scott,
a Navy veteran of World War I, was a member of the Front Street Presbyterian Church.

John A. Shafer Nursing Memorial Scholarship
This fund honors Mr. Shafer’s lifelong commitment to helping students reach their educational goals by offering a
scholarship to a young man or woman who wants to pursue a career in nursing. Mr. Shafer was the former President
and owner of Shafer Implement Company. His family is most proud of his dedication to helping students through
scholarships he set up through the Miami University Fund and the Hamilton Community Foundation.

John and Nancy Smittle Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by the family of Mr. and Mrs. Smittle in their memory. The Smittle’s were dedicated
teachers and were active in many community projects. This scholarship was created to help well-rounded students
from Hamilton and Badin High Schools and focuses on academic achievement, activities and employment. Mr. and
Mrs. Smittle are the parents of two children, Jill Waldon and Todd Smittle. Mr. Smittle passed away on July 5, 2002,
and Mrs. Smittle passed away on August 24, 2002.

David L. Stitsinger Memorial Merit Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established in memory of Mr. Stitsinger to support students pursuing a career in education.
He was a graduate of Taft High School and received a B.S. in education from The Ohio State University. He received
his master’s degree in education administration from Miami University. He was employed by Home Federal Savings
and Loan for 18 years, where he had been named Interim CEO. He had been involved with many organizations in the
community throughout his lifetime. He and his wife, Judy, have three children, Steven, Stacey and Kari. Mr. Stitsinger
passed away on June 15, 1991, at the age of 47.

Georgina Thompson Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by Mrs. Thompson as a scholarship fund for a female student seeking a business career.
Mrs. Thompson enjoyed a long career with the Leshner Corporation.

This scholarship fund was established through the estate of Miss Susan Thum, in memory of her parents. Miss Thum
was a teacher in the Mt. Healthy Schools. This scholarship is for a student majoring in education.

John and Clara Wallace Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established from the estate of Mrs. Clara Wallace to provide scholarships to deserving students in need
of financial assistance.

Valeta Z Welborn Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established in 1998 by Dorothea Zellner, in memory of her sister, Edith Valeta Zellner
Welborn, for a student from Hamilton High or Badin High Schools attending Miami University and majoring in nursing.
Mrs. Welborn was active in the Hamilton Garden Club and Eastern Star. Dorthea Zellner passed away April 12, 2013.
Award: $500 for one year –Merit Based
Francis and Mabel Wilks Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by the Wilks family in memory of their parents and is to be used for a scholarship for a
student planning to go into social work. They are the parents of four children, Harry T. Wilks, William C. Wilks, Marge
Handel and Francis Wilks (deceased).

Patricia A. Wilks Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by friends and family of Patricia A. Wilks to be used to provide a scholarship for a student
residing in the city of Hamilton. Patricia graduated from Hamilton High School and attended Miami University where
she graduated with an associate’s degree. She worked with her husband, William C. Wilks, in their insurance business
and was a substitute teacher with the Hamilton City Schools. She was active in many organizations in the community.
The couple had two children, Tari Ann Wilks and Craig Francis Wilks. She passed away at age 56.

Jean and William Wolf Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established in memory of Jean & William Wolf to provide scholarships for students at Hamilton and Badin
High Schools. Mr. Wolf was a lifelong resident of Hamilton and co-founder with Walter Rentschler of Southwestern Ohio
Steel Company in 1945. Mr. Wolf worked in the business for more than 40 years. He was co-founder of Family Services
of Butler County and the Hamilton Community Foundation where he also served as Trustee. The Wolf’s were married
for 66 years and had two daughters and one son. Mr. Wolf passed away December 23, 1996 and Mrs. Wolf passed
away March 14, 2008.
