PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Dear Members
It gives me great pleasure to present for your consideration and adoption the 91st Annual Report of your Association for the
financial year 2010/11
This is my first season as President and I was privileged to work with this year’s Committee, the energy and commitment
provided by all contributed to the successful management of our Association.
The first six months for this newly formed Committee was momentous, some of the issue presented and goals achieved
including:
•
Re-incorporation.
•
Reviewing, fine tuning and amending the MWCA By Laws and Playing Conditions.
•
Successfully applying for an extension to the Warringah Shire Council Sporting Grant approved in 2009.
•
Negotiating new quotations then issuing new contracts for four new pitches totaling $48,000 in turnover.
•
Working with council and contractors to relocate two of the four pitches.
•
Re-establishing close dialogue between the MWCA and MWJCA, including having a MWCA committee member
attend all of the MWJCA monthly meetings. (Mat Meers and myself)
•
Entering into direct negotiations with Peninsular, Warringah and Manly councils, after Peninsular and Warringah
decided to deal directly with sporting associations rather than through the Sporting Union.
This year we decided to introduce sub committees and it was an outstanding success. Utilising the abilities of all Committee
Members is an important step forward and the results I believe speak for themselves.
•
Martin Shield: Brenden Ball, David Lang and Bill Clark selected players from six different clubs after a series of
trials. After winning their first game outright they went on to win the minor premiership undefeated and were very
unlucky that weather played against them in both the Grand Final and Grand Final replay.
•
Main Draw: Brenden Ball and Mat Meers, never an easy job, further challenges coming when a team withdrew
before a ball had been bowled, and then two others at various stages in the season.
•
T/20: Steve Shepherd, Mat Meers, Brett Holiday, AJ Fry and myself organised this seasons competition, and
again it appeared to be enjoyed by all that played, an increase from 8 to 12 teams this season.
•
Judiciary: Liz Donnelly and Brian Ferguson, fortunately they were only called upon once this season on a
disciplinary case. Lyle Pearce, Brendon Ball and I also presided. I believe all appeals were dealt with
appropriately and professionally.
•
Grounds: Carl Pymble and myself were certainly challenged this season delivering four new pitches. Many hours
were spent with the council and contractors.
•
Presentation Night: Liz Donnelly, Carl Pymble, David Lang, Steve Shepherd and Mat Meers put together a very
entertaining night held at the Steyne Hotel. I have received numerous calls congratulating the organisers on
hosting the “best Presentation Night for many years”. It was also very special to see six Life Members attending,
representing 146 combined years of service to the MWCA in office bearing roles alone.
I would also like to thank the Clubs, their Committees, Team Captains and Association Delegates for their continued work.
Without your effort we would not have a game.
Finally, I am proud to announce that MWCA Life Member and Patron Lyle Pearce was awarded a Gold Service Medal for
50 Continuous years of service by Cricket Australia, recognising his outstanding contribution to cricket.

SECRETARY’S REPORT
Dear MWCA,
The Manly Warringah Cricket Association (MWCA) has a rich history, reaching back in time, in one form or another, to
1920. I considered it a great honour to be elected the 19th Secretary of the MWCA at the AGM on August 5 in the heavily lit
back room at Belrose Bowling Club. What must it have been like for James Randall (1920-23)? Did he have a type writer?
Or a phone? And even if he did, who would he call?
There have been some wonderfully enduring MWCA Secretaries: R.A Baker (1936-8, 1944-54), Alex Anderson (1954-69),
Frank Gray (1973-1989) and Peter Moses (1989-2004) just to name a few. Having spent just one season in the job, I am in
awe of the contribution those men have made, along with the many other long serving office bearers in the MWCA's 91 year
history.
Reinstatement as an Incorporated Association
Due to a self perpetuating oversight (apparently caused by something as simple as a former Secretary changing address), the
Association had not been complying with its reporting obligations to the Department of Fair Trading for some years. In our
application for reinstatement as an Incorporated Association we were required, among other things, to provide financial
statements from the last seven years and minutes from the last three. In essence we had to show that the MWCA, believing
itself to be incoporated, had been managing its affairs as an Incorporated Association should. I am thankful to the outgoing
Committee, particularly Brian Ferguson, Simon Hutchinson, Mark Kemp and Stuart Wraggs, that we were able to
demonstrate our credentials in quick time, and were reinstated as MWCA Inc. by notice in the New South Wales Government
Gazette on 17 August 2010.
Life Membership
The nomination of Brian Ferguson for Life Membership was unanimously endorsed at the AGM on 5 August, 2010. Brian
becomes the 28th Life Member in the 91 year history of your Association.
Registrations
46 teams representing 17 Clubs registered to play in the Saturday afternoon competitions. A further 11 teams from 8 clubs,
and a MWCA Barbarians team organised by Brenden Ball, registered to play in the MWCA's Sunday T/20 competition,
named this season “The Mike Pawley Cup”.
Unfortunately, the number of Clubs dropped to 16 when Balgowlah Golf Cricket Club withdrew their only team (4th Grade)
during the early rounds due to a lack of numbers. We also lost the Belrose A1s teams over the Christmas break, reducing to
total number of teams going the distance in the main competitions to 44.
These are not good numbers. Putting T/20 to one side, 44 teams is the lowest participation we've had in the Saturday
afternoon competition since the Tied Test. Better liasion with the Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association and the
District Clubs, as well as the development of more flexible competition formats have been identified as possible solutions. I
hope that the next Annual Report will be able to report postive developments in these areas.
There is no doubt that cultural developments such as Saturday afternoon shopping, longer working hours, enhanced
fatherhood duties and the increased pace of life generally have had an impact on cricket participation since the heady days of
the mid 1980s. Having all those golden beaches nearby adds to the challenge. But junior participation is high and I sense a
mood that the MWCA, and its delegates, believe cricket faces a healthy and thriving future in this district, especially with
increased co-ordination between local cricketing bodies.
By the way, I've never met anyone who regretted playing cricket and we should continue to encourage our youth (and the
older blokes as well) to keep doing so.
Meetings
The MWCA and its Delegates met eight (8) times during the 2010/11 season including the AGM (5/8/10), a Special General
Meeting (26/8/10), Captains' Night (9/9/10) and Delegates Meetings on 7/10/10, 4/11/10, 16/12/10, 3/2/11 and 3/3/11. I
thank all the Clubs for their attendance. Only one $50 fine was issued for non attendance, which was paid promptly by the
Club involved and will form the start of a charity fund for Bear Cottage.
The MWCA Committee met on 11 occasions, including the dates set out above and three others. Only Mat Meers and Steve
Shepherd attended all 11 meetings, but the attendance was commendable at roughly 85%.
7
On behalf of your Association David Sheedy attended numerous meetings with pitch contractors, Council, the Sporting
Union, the MWJCA, the NSWDCA and the District Clubs. Also attending meetings were Mat Meers (Council, MWJCA,
Sporting Union), Stephen Shepherd (NSWDCA, Sporting Union) and Carl Pymble (pitch contractors, Steyne Hotel).
Judiciary
There was one match protest hearing, one Judiciary hearing and one Judiciary Appeal panel hearing held this summer.
There were also a couple of guilty pleas taken, and I can't help but note that those who took the guilty plea tended to fare
better and let everyone move on with their lives. In general terms I would commend the level of on field behaviour. It's not
perfect but what I mainly see is a dominant culture of respect and goodwill that the odd incident only partially erodes.
Rule Changes
There were 28 amendments to the By Laws and Playing Conditions this year as the Association continued to refine the new
and comprehensive Handbook presented by Simon Hutchinson in 2009. The most interesting changes were:
•
•
•
The repeal of the Squads and Availability rule in favour of a general rule where a player's 5th, instead of 3rd
appearance in a higher grade is deemed as registration in that Grade.
Extension of the “Switcheroo” rule to semi final and finals matches.
Introduction of a bonus point system for One Dayers in the event of a greater than 20% margin of victory.
Pitch Installation Program
The generosity of our Clubs in agreeing to a $250 per team pitch levy in 2009 is paying dividends with the installation of
four new pitches at District Park this summer (Nolans 2, Nolans 3, Nolans 4 and Passmore 1). On top of the new Nolans 1
track installed in 2009/10 District Park has never looked so good insofar as the tracks its provides for our local batsmen,
bowlers and, dare I say it, wicket keepers. Much credit must go to David Sheedy and Carl Pymble for implementing this
outcome, particularly their attention to quality assurance.
Martin Shield
Under the Management of our Vice President Brenden Ball and the Captaincy of our Treasurer Bill Clark, Manly-Warringah
put in its best performance in the 104 history of the coveted Martin Shield, ultimately missing out on the title on run rate in a
rain affected Grand Final replay against Blacktown at Manly Oval on 13 Feb.
The Martin Shield selection process cast its net a little wider this year and produced an excellent team. The success of this
year's side can only help inspire plans to expand the MWCA's representative program, in the short term towards the
reinstatement of an U23s Telegraph Shield side. I consider 19-23 an extremely important age period in the development of a
cricketer. If the MWCA doesn't foster late bloomers, they could be lost to the game. But a Telegraph Shield team will only
happen with the assistance and enthusiasm of our Clubs - a whole new team of volunteers, players and mentors will be
needed.
Umpires
The provision of umpires in the MWCA has rarely if ever been better. There are currently 12-13 regular umpires devoting
their services to the MWCA. Grades 1-3 were routinely allocated umpires during the season. The T/20 knockout phase was
also umpired at the MWCA's expense. The semi final weekend presented a challenge but thanks to the sterling efforts of our
legendary Umpire Co-ordinator Errol Cranney all 12 semi finals and 6 finals were allocated at least one official, MWCA
appointed, ticketed umpire.
Press
Thanks are extended to The Manly Daily for the publication of cricket results and news. Apart from publishing the results
sent promptly to them by Mat Meers, the Daily also wrote a number feature articles on our Martin Shield side. Thank you
also to those players who made themselves available for photo shoots and interviews.
In an attempt to attract players we also advertised twice in The Manly Daily, however I cannot report those attempts met
with any discernible level of success.
New Competitions and Trophies
The 2010/11 season saw the introduction of a T/20 Plate, while the T/20 Cup, in its second season, was named after former
NSW Sheffield Shield player and local cricketing guru Mike Pawley. (As a 13 year old in 1957/8, Mike took 46 wickets at
8.28 in Fourth Grade. The following summer he scored 619 runs at 36.4 and took 45 wickets at 11.5 in thirds, playing for
Manly Warringah District).
8
The Committee also introduced three inaugural individual awards to go with the longstanding Douglas Darby Trophy for
Cricketer of the Year and the Arthur Little Trophy for Sportsman of the Year. The new awards are:
•
•
•
The Jill Pearce Rising Star Award
The Umpire of the Year
The Representative Player of the Year
There's also been some new silver wear picked up during the season. Thanks you to David Sheedy who purchased, on behalf
of the Association, the grand new Mike Pawley Cup on a trip to North Korea (for 10,000 kwan, about $200). Thanks also to
Brenden Ball and David Sheedy for donating $200 each to the purchase of a magnificent Club Championship Cup, a replica
of the FA Cup, and without doubt the most glittering trophy in the cabinet. The Premiership Shields, however, are
approaching their used by date and it will soon be time for renewal.
Presentation Night
Over 100 people attended the Presentation Night on 4 June, 2011. Its not easy to find a venue older than than the MWCA
but we did, convening at the Steyne Hotel, which was built in 1859. The Verandah Bar proved to be an ideal location,
providing an atmosphere that added greatly to the night. The jubilant reception from the bleeches as Life Members were
introduced at the commencement of the proceedings was, personally, my highlight of the season.
Association Awards are hard earned and it was the determination of the Committee that there should be a venue and event to
fit the occasion. Credit must go to Carl Pymble and Liz Donnelly for proposing and organising the evening, though they
were in form, having organised their own wedding on April 16. Thank you also to David Lang for arranging an unparalleled
array of trophies, and to Mat Meers for his invaluable help in MC-ing the evening.
In all 39 Presentations were made including 9 Premiership Awards, 24 Batting/Bowling Awards, five keynote awards and
the induction of Brian Ferguson as Life Member.

Committee
I would like to express my gratitude to the MWCA Committee of 2010/11. To David Sheedy for his leadership and
enthusiasm. No one has attended more meetings or made more phone calls on behalf of your Association than Sheeds. To
Brenden Ball for his sound judgment and foresight – without Brendo we wouldn't have even registered in time for the Martin
Shield, let alone gone so perilously close to winning it. For Bill Clark to take on the role of Treasurer and Martin Shield
Captain was a monumental commitment, and that he led the Martin Shield team with such aplomb is no surprise. Liz
Donnelly introduced minute taking lap tops to MWCA meetings and spoke honestly and fearlessly to the male dominated
group, a brave and invaluable member of the Committee. Mat Meers was again Mr Reliable – faced with significant
MyCricket challenges his turnaround time, inventiveness and mathematical ability were priceless commodities. To Carl
Pymble, without Carl's pitch construction inspections we might well have ended up with a dodgy pitch or two. He was also
the driving force behind the relocation of the Presentation Night to the Steyne Hotel, which was a resounding success.
David Lang, now the longest serving member on the Committee, was, as always, a bastion of fairness, and the meticulous
care he took in organising the trophies and engravings is indicative of his contribution to, and appreciation of, local cricket.
Brett Holliday excelled in his first year as a Committee Member, a promoter of new ideas including the introduction of the
bonus point system for One Dayers, which proved extremely popular. The youngest member of our Committee, AJ Fry,
showed great promise as a minute taker at Judiciary meetings and will find himself encouraged to take on larger roles down
the track. And finally, to our Umpire's Co-ordinator Errol Cranney, who is effectively running an Umpires Association. It
can't be easy managing a “Cantankerous Bunch of Old Penguins” but Errol has compiled an umpiring team that other
Associations would envy and that we should not take for granted. I can honestly say its been a pleasure working with the
MWCA Committee of 2010/11 and I've learned a great deal.
Regards
Shep

TREASURER'S REPORT
I am pleased to report that despite considerable investment during the 2010/11, the finances of the MWCA are in an
increasingly healthy state.
We successfully installed four new pitches at Nolans 2,3,4 and Passmore 1. Pitch Replacement Associated Costs include
$7,500 to Rubber & Synthetic, $704 for Edwards & Son Earth Moving and $250 to Carl Pymble for grass work around the
new Nolans pitches. In all, the MWCA spent nearly $33,000 on the new pitches during the reporting period, in conjunction
with the MWJCA and Warringah Council. While Warringah Council were to cover 50% of the construction costs under the
grant agreement, a cap on this resulted in a shortfall of $1674.45 payable by your Association.
The generous Kookaburra rebate of $4,707 covers two seasons because the 2009/10 rebate was not recovered until this
reporting period. Kookaburra also donated a full player kit for our last two Players of the Year and a Brad Haddin signed bat
that we were able to auction at the MWCA Presentation night on 4 June 2011.
The MWCA's Umpire expenses of $7935 represented a $2,235 increase on last season, thanks mainly to the better provision
of umpires for finals matches, the Association's decision to fund umpires for all knock out T/20 games, and the prescribed
fee increases set out in By Law 5.5.2. The Presentation Night also ran at a loss, but was a great success and well worth the
investment.
Martin Shield expenses do not include approximately $990 yet to be invoiced by Manly Grade for ground hire at Graham's
Reserve and Manly Oval. Martin Shield expenses were up this year as a direct result of us playing more games, all the way
to a Grand Final replay. New uniforms were also provided.
Sporting Union Fees are also awaiting invoice, and are likely to exceed $5,000. So I calculate the real annual profit for
2010/11 to be around $4,608.10, which will roll into next years result.
Note also that during the year we upgraded to MYOB to help manage our accounts, and changed our Westpac Bank Account
to Community Not for Profit accounts, attracting better interest rates and lower fees. Interest was earned for the first time on
our higher cash balance accounts, the John Mountain Fund and Pitch Levy Fund.

PREMIERSHIPS
Congratulations to all Premiership winning sides. Every competition was keenly contested and played with considerable
intensity. Premierships aren't won easily and all Clubs on the list below have carved themselves a little bit of history.
Special mention also to Harbord Bowling Club who qualified for Grand Finals in each of the top four grades, and to
Collaroy Plateau who qualified for the semi finals in all six grades. I believe both achievements are unprecedented.
I do note however my regret that the Saturday afternoon Grand Finals scheduled for March 19 & 20 were substantially
washed out. We have not traditionally had a reserve weekend but the vote taken at the Captain's Night to make the semi
Final Sat/Sun instead of Sat/Sat meant we did have a reserve weekend this year. And we should've used it. As an issue
more within my jurisdiction than anyone else's I wish I'd shown more foresight on this.
But the rules were clear and the same for everyone. Nothing should be allowed to diminish the achievements of the teams
listed below. They won as fair and square as any team that has gone before them.

Brian Ferguson
Brian Ferguson was born in 1944 and while he had a cricketing pedigree in his school years (once taking 7/3 from 8 overs
for Newington Firsts) he never played any organised cricket from age 17 to 46, from 1961 to 1990.
In 1990 he joined the Manly Leagues Cricket Club. Personable and outspoken, the career sales rep is described in the Club's
history for that season as a “charismatic middle aged debutante”. In 1991/2 Fergo became captain of the C1s side and it was
as a captain that he excelled. He took the side to the premiership that summer and was a popular leader amongst younger
players. He took an interest in them and knew how to get the best out of them. The Club always gave Fergo the most
difficult players to manage, the wilder, tougher young guys, but they all behaved themselves under Fergo, who possessed a
personality that the younger generation could relate to. In 1993/4 he led another team of young players to a convincing B3s
premiership victory, a side that contained future A1s stars such as Paul Killalea, Jarrod Hitchcox, Simon Gillespie and
Tyrone Tedman, just to name a few. In that season Fergo not only took 30 wickets with his halting off spinners, he also
became the first player in the history of Manly Leagues CC to captain two premiership winning sides.
Fergo continued in a mentoring role throughout the 1990s, serving as Vice President of the Club and delegate to the MWCA.
He was elected to the MWCA Committee in 1995 and it was around this time that his interests turned to umpiring and
administration of the game. Fergo quickly emerged as an objective and talented umpire, the 50 year old moving from Park
to Grade to First Grade in quick time. In the late 1990s, when his First Grade match was cancelled, he umpired an A1s
match involving his former Club at Nolans 1. His impartiality as an umpire was on show even then, the Club's Newsletter
noting: “Apart from one LBW he raised his index finger only once when we bowled, picking his nose in the 54th over”.
In 2000 Brian Ferguson was elected President of the MWCA. His easy going nature and common sense approach made him
a pleasure to work with. Brian was a tireless worker in his decade as President and spent thousands of hours attending and
chairing committee meetings, delegates meetings, judiciary hearings and the like on behalf of the Association. And at those
meetings he was clearly in charge. No one could win an argument with Fergo. He commanded respect. But he could
always take a joke, especially if directed at him.
As President, Brian's leadership was instrumental in the discernible improvement in on field (and off field) behaviour seen
over the last decade, as well as better working conditions and provision of umpires. He also actively promoted innovation,
such as the adoption of Results Vault/My Cricket, the development of the new and modern Handbook passed at the 2009
AGM, and the introduction of a pitch replacement fund.
During his time as MWCA President Fergo's umpiring career continued to advance. Currently, he's umpired over 240 grade
games, nearly 140 of them in First Grade, and a couple of Grade Finals. He's also been ranked in the top five Grade Umpires
in NSW six times in ten years and was elected to the Board of the NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association in 2009.
His achievements in cricket are particularly remarkable when you consider that he effectively took up the game as a 46 year
old. He is an inspiration to anyone in their 40s, 50s or 60s who feel they're getting too old to contribute to the great game of

Brian J. Ferguson served as MWCA President from 2000-2010, joining an exclusive band who've had the energy to take on
that responsibility for a decade or longer, namely Clifton D. Leake (1931-1944), Des S. Sainsbury (1955-65), Lyle J. Pearce
(1976-89) and Tony B. Rainey (1989-2000)
The 28th Life Member of the MWCA is Brian Ferguson.

The Douglas Darby Trophy for Cricketer of the Year
The 32nd recipient of the MWCA Douglas Darby Trophy for Cricketer of is David Brady from Long Reef.
A former tennis pro once ranked 1413 in the world, David joined the Long Reef Cricket Club as a 27 year old in 2006 to
“play with his mates”. In a recent interview with the Manly Daily he made some salient comments: “It was a lot of fun
going out on Saturday and playing with a good group of friends”. And “I have enjoyed it, but you can't compare it to what I
did in tennis because I aspired to make tennis my career”. That is not to say many cricketers participating in the MWCA do
not aspire to a career in the sport. The more that do the better.
A notable performer in recent seasons, David Brady's cricket reached new heights in 2010/11 with both bat and ball. The 32
year old, who came into the summer as a top order batsman and handy leg spinner, became the leading wicket taker in the
Association with 48 scalps at 12.48 in the highly competitive Third Grade competition. His batting also found another gear,
the talented left hander accumulating 547 runs at 54.7, including 100 in the Third Grade semi final against Manly Leagues.
David also played four T/20 games during the season, scoring 86 runs and taking six wickets.
A close runner up for the Award this year was Zaven Jordan from Harbord Bowling Club, who compiled 811 runs in Second
Grade, including 103no in the semi final against Belrose Rugby League. His 211 against Wakehurst Redbacks in Round 14
is the highest individual score in that Grade in the history of the MWCA, breaking a 58 year old record (K.Clark's 200no for
Narrabeen Lakes in 1952/3). Zaven was also Man of the Match in the Mike Pawley Cup Final, pummelling the bowling
with 61 runs from only 20 odd balls.

The Arthur Little Trophy for Sportsman of the Year
There were no less than six nominations for Sportsman of the Year this season. The nominations included:
Bill Clark: Took on the role of Treasurer and the Captaincy of the Martin Shield side, leading Manly over seven dramatic
games to its best finish in history.
Errol Cranney: Has always been a great Umpires Co-ordinator and its been taken for granted how much work he does.
Mat Meers: In the electronic age Mat Meers has made the role of Webmaster his own. Continued excellence.
David Kirkland: His draw re-design when Belrose pulled out at an inconvenient time was a work of genius, a great effort to
reach agreement of all First Grade captains for what turned out to be a better draw.
Scott Dolman: Has led efforts to modernize the growing Long Reef Cricket Club
But the winner of this years Sportsman of the Year Award is Stephen Shepherd. Shep has played in the MWCA competition
since the 1992/3 season and has developed a reputation as a gutsy but dour opening batsman, in the Geoffrey Boycott mode.
Despite good stats in the early to mid 1990s, Shep has sometimes struggled to score runs fluently with his blocking style of
play, though he did find some lost form during 2010/11 with scores of 70 in 6th grade, a match winning 62no in a one dayer
against the eventual premiers in fifths, and 18no batting with a groin strain against Long Reef in thirds. As the Manly
Leagues captain in the T/20 Shep led his side to Mike Pawley Cup Quarter Finals but on a personal level only managed to
prove that T/20 is a young man's game, with scores of 4,2,0 and 0.
Shep's real standout performance was off the field, volunteering to take on the role of Secretary for 2010/11 and working
hard to restore the Association's incorporation status. The time, effort and professionalism Shep brought to the role of
Secretary was exemplary. The MWCA was reincorporated within 14 days of Shep taking office and the many emails he sent
after midnight are perhaps the best pointer to the work he put in. Shep also found time to refine the MWCA Handbook and
open up the lines of communication between the MWCA Committee and its Clubs.

Umpire of the Year
This is the inaugural MWCA Umpire of the Year award.
Martin Edgell qualified for his NSW Umpires ticket at a course run by Errol Cranney at Melwood Oval in 1997 (thus
exploding the popular myth that he found it in a Weet-Bix packet). Marty spent his first season umpiring in our local parks
before moving to Grade in 1999. He quickly advanced up the Grades, becoming an established First Grade umpire who
would officiate often at Manly Oval, and in Grade Grand Finals.
He ranked as high as fourth in the First Panel of the NSWCU&SA, in the mix with famous umpiring names such as Taufel,
Tucker and Abood, until retiring due to a painful ankle spur injury which required cortisone injections to get him on the
paddock. Despite this, Marty attempted a comeback as a player in 2007/8 and 2008/9, scoring 109 runs at 12.11 in 11
appearances for Cromer in the MWCA, until hamstring tears ensured this would be a short lived career option.
Heeding the advice of his umpiring mentor Errol Cranney, Marty returned to officiating in the MWCA in 2009/10 and has
been an outstanding performer. Marty didn't win this award due to his background, he won it on the basis of the glowing
references received from players. To quote only the best of them: “When you see Marty out on the field, the grin he has on
his face tells you that there's no other place in the world he would rather be. But also you know that he is in total control of
the game, he has an aura about him that despite how calm and relaxed he looks, you know he is the man. He has the respect
of every player that walks onto his field.”
2010-11
Martin Edgell
Representative Player of the Year
There was a question mark over whether Rob Lavery, playing his first season of A1s, would be able to handle Martin Shield.
Not only did he handle it, he mastered it. Loping in but bowling fast and relying primarily on seam, Rob took 18 wickets at
the stunning average of 8.06, including 6/54 in the nail biting semi final against Sutherland at Manly Oval. Rob was also the
leading wicket taker in the whole Martin Shield competition of 2010/11.

Jill Pearce Rising Star Award
There were four nominations for the inaugural Jill Pearce Rising Star Award. Jill Pearce served for 30 seasons (1978 to
2007) as the MWCA's Ground Manager and its great to see this award named after a woman. Maternal support is often so
vital in the development of young cricketers. To be eligible for the Award, players must not have turned 21 before the end
of January of the relevant season, which is consistent with the President's Cup criteria.
The nominations were:
16 year old Matthew Terry scored 662 runs in Sixth Grade at 60.18, with two centuries and three fifties. Including U17s
and the T/20 NSW Weet-Bix Cup, Mat scored 1003 runs for Collaroy Plateau during the summer of 2010/11, a key member
of premiership winnings teams in both the MWCA 6th Grade and MWJCA U17s.
18 year old Sam Curruthers marked himself as a pace bowler of the future with some lively spells during the season
(including one that split open the Association Secretary's finger in the first round of the T/20). Sam played every game for
Harbord Bowling Club's premiership winning Third Grade side and was their leading wicket taker with 37 scalps at 12.22,
including 5/26 in the ultimately crucial semi final win against Collaroy Plateau.
For the third year in a row 20 year old Andrew Bitmead was prolific with both bat and ball for Wakehurst Redbacks. This
season he scored 541 runs at 41.62 in Second Grade with a high score of 148, and also took 23 wickets at 14.43. Andrew
has been a key contributor to the Redbacks' trailblazing T/20 “A” side and represented his District in its most successful
Martin Shield season, scoring 37 on debut in Round 2. He was a close runner up for this Award.
The winner of the Inaugural Jill Pearce Rising Star Award is 17 year old Daniel Schimek of Collaroy Plateau. Playing his
first season of seniors cricket, Daniel took on the role of opening batsman in Second Grade and compiled 541 runs at 33.81
with a highest score of 121. He also made a match-winning 78 in the T/20 Plate Final and can roll his arm over as well,
taking 6 wickets during the season.

NSWDCA MARTIN SHIELD
The MWCA Committee resolved to give a renewed emphasis to its representative program, starting with the Martin Shield of 2010/11. A
Sub-Committee comprising Brenden Ball (Team Manager), Bill Clark (Captain) and David Lang (Assistant Manager) was set up to take
responsibility for the program. But the campaign was nearly over before it began.
A change of MWCA secretariat and email address meant that your Association was unaware that registrations were due as early as Monday,
20 September. Fortunately, at 9.20am on Monday 20 September, the inquisitive Brenden Ball took it upon himself to send an email to Steve
Mullaly (Sydney North Area Manager for Cricket NSW) seeking info/guidance on what we needed to do to register. At 9.31am Mullaly
replied in detail as he forwarded Ball's email to the relevant authority, Eric Myatt of the New South Wales District Cricket Association
(NSWDCA). By 11.17am Myatt had accepted Ball's intuitively timed application.
The tall and charismatic Bill Clark, winner of the A1s batting average award in 2009/10, was a popular choice as captain. Your Association
pursued the policy of casting the net as wide at possible, holding well publicised selection trials (attended by players from First to Fifth
Grade) and selecting a squad of players representing no less than six clubs.
Team spirit was fostered, a ritual game day breakfast (at the Zest Cafe' in Balgowlah) instituted before Round 1. The first round match
against Hornsby, scheduled for Grahams' Reserve on Sunday, 7 November, was in danger of being washed out but local knowledge saved
the situation, the match relocated to the well drained Terrey Hills Oval. This only served to accentuate the home ground advantage, Clark
winning the toss and sending the opposition in, the bowling quartet of Westall, Osborne, Lavery and Langby combining beautifully as
Hornsby were bowled out out for 86. The run chase was convincing, the first five drops exceeding 20, including 41 to veteran Simon
Osborne as Manly made 194. Hornsby were sent back in with only 30 overs to go but were dismissed in 27.3 overs as Manly registered the
only outright victory of the 2010/11 Martin Shield competition, Osborne returning the stunning figures of 5 wickets for 1 run from 9 overs.
The solitary single came from a misfield by his flatmate Justin Waters who would later tell the Manly Daily, under the headline ONE HE
WON'T FORGET: “If I knew he wouldn't let up on it I wouldn't have misfielded”.
In wet conditions in Round 2, Manly compiled a handy 159 (Astin 47) against joint defending champions Hawkesbury at Richmond Oval.
Although no more play was possible it was a successful day if for no other reason that the team bonding session at the Mean Fiddler and the
raucous bus ride home. In Round 3, drawn against the other joint defending champions Moore Park & South East at Kensington Oval,
Manly completely dominated, dismissing the ten time Martin Shield premiers for just 75, speedster Cas Westall leading the charge with
6/28. Manly took only an hour to run down that total (Astin 41) for a nine wicket win that secured the minor premiership.
Despite finishing the group stage in first position a change to the finals format meant Manly's tough draw was to continue, scheduled to play
8th placed Moore Park again in a sudden death quarter final at Grahams Reserve. Moore Park batted better this time and, though restricted
to 147, a significant run chase was required. Manly made no mistake, Bill Clark unbeaten on 61 as the Waratahs won by seven wickets.
Manly Oval was secured as to location for the semi final against Sutherland and the teams would produce a match fitting the occasion.
Batting first, Sutherland were looking home and hosed when they compiled 8/252 from their 55 overs, and it could have been more but for
Rob Lavery's 6/54. The run chase would be a gut wrencher. Manly needed more than a run a ball for much of the innings, the batsmen
forced to scramble singles and ride their luck, wickets lost in the process. At the start of the final over, Manly were 9/244, needing 8 runs to
progress to the Grand Final. It is now folklore that a mesmerising Justin Water cover drive hit the pickets with enough force to tip the
balance, a single off the final ball securing Manly's first Grand Final birth in the 104 years of Martin Shield history. Remarkably, it was the
second year in a row that Sutherland had been eliminated as the lower ranked team in a semi final tie.
Grand Final opponents Blacktown would be a team to be reckoned with, boasting the likes of 32 year old former NSW quick Don Nash. In
hot, steamy conditions at Mike Pawley Oval on 13 February, Blacktown won the toss and batted first, Manly bowling well to restrict them to
156. Manly were still in the box seat at 2/23 from 6.5 overs but the muggy conditions whipped up a vicious storm that abruptly ended the
possibility of any further play.
Although NSWDCA By Law 21.5 provides that a Grand Final replay may only be considered if there are less than three hours of play in the
original, the MWCA raised no objection when the NSWDCA waived that provision to allow a replay to take place one week later. Manly
Oval was secured as the venue for the Grand Final Replay, the match attracting considerable interest and media attention.
It would be another drama charged day. Again, the luck and the weather threw challenges at the Manly side. In damp, overcast conditions
Blacktown won the toss and sent Manly in on a sticky deck that was popping and seaming. Despite receiving some unplayable balls, the
Manly batsmen scrambled their way to 119, defendable in the conditions. But, as the Manly Daily noted in its next edition, “three rain
delays ensured a cat and mouse afternoon...It was a decider that had it all. Runs, wickets, dropped catches and multiple rain delays. Even
a streaker”.
Blacktown finally scraped home by the barest of margins, awarded the game on superior run rate after being 7/109 from 30 overs. In fact,
under the the NSWDCA By Laws, had any of the three rain delays lasted a minute or two longer Blacktown would have batted for only 29
overs, and Manly would have been made joint premiers (30 overs per side is the minimum for a game). Manly's 119 was not actually
breached. They had gone the distance like perhaps no runners up ever have before.
Congratulations to Blacktown on their maiden Martin Shield premiership. Meanwhile, this was the best performance by a Manly Warringah
side in the 104 year history of the Martin Shield. It is hoped that the efforts of Bill Clark's 2010/11 team will invigorate the MWCA's
representative program, which will hopefully expand into the U23s and U19s competitions. That would be a great thing for grass roots local
cricket.

FIRST GRADE - THE CLIFTON D. LEAKE SHIELD
The First Grade competition was looking like a bit of a basket case during the first half of the season as everything that could
go wrong did. The Committee chose an 8 team structure but that never got off the ground. Cromer, who'd applied for
Second Grade, withdrew before a ball had been bowled. Belrose, meanwhile, struggled with numbers, forced to forfeit a
number of games, while Manly Breakers, in their debut First Grade season and also short of players, were suffering some
heavy losses. Collaroy Plateau were also feeling the pinch, several players in their ageing squad succumbing to injury.
It came to head during the Sydney Test when Belrose, having used 29 players in just 6 appearances, advised they could no
longer go on like this and withdrew from the competition. As Belrose had played Collaroy Plateau more than once, the
MWCA rules required a 7 team structure with not not only a bye, but also a forfeit each round.
The turning point came soon after when David Kirkland of Mona Vale, showing considerable mathematical genius,
proposed an alternative draw that would protect previous results, extend the competition to 13 instead of 12 rounds, and
ensure a flow of competitive cricket for the best players in our Association. It did involve some minor points adjustments
but in a commendable display of goodwill all First Grade captains promptly agreed to the proposal.
From this moment the A1s competition turned into a cracker. Everyone had been predicting a replay of the 2009/10 Harbord
Bowling Club v Harbord Diggers Grand Final but this competition was destined for many twists and turns. Diggers
continued on their winning way but, heading into the final round, the next four teams (HBCCC 38, MVCC 37, WRCC 37,
CPCC 34) faced sudden death. With 2008/9 champions Harbord Diggers too strong for Mona Vale (175-100) and Wakehurst
Redbacks overcoming a much improved Manly Breakers side (193-155), much rested on the Harbord Bowling v Collaroy
Plateau clash at Harbord Park. Collaroy Plateau made 6/260 on day one thanks to 90s from veterans Rob Minnett and Dave
Bennetts, Harbord Bowling Club replying with just 134 after some controversial top soiling during the week. Mona Vale
had been displaced in the final round of musical chairs, while Harbord Bowling Club dropped to fourth in the seedings.
The Harbord Diggers v Harbord Bowling Semi Final at Nolans 1 would have felt more like a Grand Final for the two sides
who met in the decider last year. Harbord Bowling Club prevailed again, 6/174 chasing 173 (having beaten Diggers 175-111
in the 2009/10 Grand Final). But the other semi would be the game of the season. Wakehurst Redbacks and Collaroy
Plateau didn't know it yet, but they were playing for the title. On the Saturday at Harbord Park (ironically) Collaroy made
234, propelled along by 71 from that man Rob Minnett. Then another leading member of Dad's Army, Col Huxley, had
Wakehurst on the rack at 2/4. However a crucial 133 run partnership between Ryan Valentine and captain Mark Callanan
kept Wakehurst afloat. When both fell to Bennetts with the score on 211 Huxley came in for the kill and the young
Redbacks side were fighting for their lives. Congratulations to Ryan Campbell (7no) and Justin Lever (2no) who took
Wakehurst to stumps on the Sunday at 9/227 after 77 overs. Its noteworthy that, had this been any other grade, they would
have been compulsory closed at 75 instead of 80 overs, the unique rules for First Grade (A1s) making all the difference.
Harbord Bowling Club went into the Grand Final as favourites but Wakehurst Redbacks, placed third in the minor
premiership, were higher ranked. As at close of business on Friday, 18 March, all Warringah Sports Grounds were open for
play. But in the early hours of Saturday morning the heavens opened. The rain stopped briefly and the Harbord Bowling
Club made brave attempts to mop up the field. They did manage to get on, Bowlos 1/21 from 10 overs after Josh Sheedy
had rattled Nick Astin's stumps. Then the rain reared again, and that was that.
The 2010/11 First Grade Premiership represents a dream return to the top grade, after many years, for the Wakehurst
Redbacks. They have produced a young and interesting side who finished 4th in A2s last season but took the step up this
year and shocked the pundits. Not a team of champions, but a well balanced team, particularly noted for their fielding and
good humour, Wakehurst Redbacks are worthy and memorable winners of the Clifton D. Leake Shield.
This is the Wakehurst Redbacks' maiden Clifton Leake Shield. They're the 19th Club to put their name on the trophy, joining

SECOND GRADE - THE LYLE PEARCE SHIELD
The most controversial grading decision of early September was the promotion of the ageing single team club North Steyne
Tigers to Second Grade. It was, the MWCA concedes, a tough decision. Some Committee members looked on with
grimaced faces as North Steyne sunk like a stone towards the bottom of the table, just nine competition points after five
rounds. But something happened! From adversity came strength as the Tigers won nine in a row to qualify equal first in
terms of competition points, denied the Minor Premiership on percentages only. Indeed, Harbord Bowling Club had to
produce something special to secure the Minor Premership, winning their Round 14 match against Wakehurst outright on the
back of an all time record individual score for this grade from Zaven Jordan (211).
Another team to come from the clouds was Belrose Rugby League, and while they may have benefited from the withdrawal
of their First Grade team, it was still a remarkable performance to recover from last position after nine rounds to finish fourth
and qualify for the semi finals. Collaroy however, who'd led the topsy turvey competition against the odds, limped into the
finals in third position, unable to record a win in their last four outings. Meanwhile, 2008/9 and 2009/10 premiers Harbord
Diggers, at unbackable odds at the start of the season, could only manage sixth spot.
Into the semi finals and the fairytale continued for the North Steyne Tigers. Against Collaroy at Terrey Hills a couple of
their veterans again stood tall, Tim Ryan making 75 before Daniel Lovett took 6/20 in the first innings victory. Meanwhile,
at Nolans 4, Harbord Bowling Club copped a scare from the resurgent Belrose. A huge cheer echoed around District Park
just after 1pm and that was no doubt caused by the dismissal of star batsman Zaven Jordan, bowled by “Tex” Walker for a
duck. The Bowlos still managed 157 and defended it well, prevailing by 28 runs despite 76 to Ben McNaughton.
The Grand Final scheduled for Nolans 4 promised to be a tantalising contest until torrential rain intervened, though the
players somehow managed to get on for 22 overs despite this being the wettest March weekend in northern beaches history.
The Harbord batsmen remaining calm with 2/71. Their Round 14 outright win had been critical, Harbord Bowling Club
securing their first Lyle Pearce Shield in a fascinating and highly entertaining Second Grade competition.

THIRD GRADE - THE J.D DURHAM SHIELD
Apart from some good mid season form from Belrose Rugby League, third grade had been largely a four horse race, the semi
finalists decided several weeks out. Harbord Bowling Club, defending premiers, again emerged as the team to beat, winning
all their games but for a five wicket loss to the young Collaroy side in Round 6. But they were kept on their toes by a
dangerous Manly Leagues side who recorded four outright wins, and a consistent Long Reef who lost only three times.
Boasting a prolific batting line up, Harbord Bowling Club amassed 8/302 from their 75 overs in their semi final against
Collaroy, Lee and Ryan Dunstan putting on 124 for the first wicket in a patient opening stand. At 2/66 the Collaroy chase
got off to a reasonable start but, in the face of such a daunting target the pressure quickly mounted, the Towers side losing
their last 8 wickets for 53 as young speedster Sam Carruthers grabbed a five wicket haul.
Meanwhile at Griffith Park, Long Reef were also surging into the Grand Final, recording a comprehensive win over Manly
Leagues. Despite the early loss of their openers Long Reef made a solid 8/214 on day one, David Brady making an even
100. In brilliant Sunday sunlight, 2003/4 Cricketer of the Year Darren Hooker made early inroads into the Manly Leagues
batting order, reducing them to 3/19. There was no way back for the Leaguees, bundled out in just 26 overs as Long Reef
prevailed by 150 runs.
The Grand Final battle between two in-form sides promised to be a tense affair as the Long Reef Club looked to recover the
Shield they won in 2008/9. But no play was possible due to inclement weather, the minor premiers awarded the title. This
is Harbord Bowling Club's third J.D Durham Shield, all of them coming in the past four seasons.

FOURTH GRADE - THE ALAN LEE SHIELD
The withdrawal of Balgowlah Golf Club early in the season meant that Fourth Grade became a seven team competition with
12 rounds. This contributed to the tightness of the competition, the top four teams separated by just four points at the
completion of the regular season. Coming into Round 14 Harbord Diggers, with the bye in that round, had a nervous wait to
see if they would hang onto the Minor Premiership, but a mini upset by Collaroy Plateau over Cromer gave them the box
seat heading into the semis.
While batsmen had generally been on top during the season, the bowlers dominated in a low scoring semi final series. No
less than 40 wickets fell for just 231 runs in this Grade on the weekend of March 12,13. At Nolans 2 (which, even with a
new deck, continues to be haunted somehow and can be difficult to bat on) Harbord Diggers made only 66, Michael
Rohanek taking 4/6 from 10 overs for Collaroy. But Diggers pulled it out of the fire. Viv Meth, who'd already top scored
for his side with an invaluable 23 runs, also led with the ball, extracting three edges to the keeper and bowling two other
victims on his way to 5/24 as Harbord Diggers produced an unlikely 17 run win.
The other semi final was eerily similar. Like Harbord Diggers, Harbord Bowling Club batted first and were dismissed
cheaply, all out for 73 as Michael Counsel, leading wicket taker in the Grade this summer, looked to have won the game for
Cromer with 4/19 off 17 overs. But someone forgot to tell Harbord Bowling Club that it was over, Aaron Campbell taking
7/17 in one of the spells of the season as Bowlos bundled Cromer out for 43 to complete a 30 run first innings win.
The Grand Final would have been another great battle of Harbord, however the wet conditions prevented any play. This was
Harbord Diggers third Alan Lee Shield, their previous victories in this Grade coming in 1971/2 and 2006/7.

FIFTH GRADE - THE DES SAINSBURY SHIELD
The promotion of Harbord Diggers to Fourth Grade meant there were no Defending Premiers in this Grade, but there were a
range of Clubs ready to stake their claim. Despite the closeness of the final competition table Cromer had actually led all the
way, however Manly Leagues, Collaroy Plateau and Long Reef had closed the gap and were finishing strongly.
Round 14 saw some innovation from the Dee Why RSL and Terrey Hills clubs. Outside of semi final contention they
offered to trial the “Double Switcheroo”. A bright game ensued, the integrity of the game was preserved, the walls did not
come tumbling down, Terrey Hills springing a minor upset with their 182 to 160 victory.
Meanwhile, the top four teams were paired off in the final round. The young Collaroy Plateau side, despite losing gun
batsman Nick Beaton to injury, continued their gutsy late season form, knocking over Minor Premiers Cromer 254 to 242 in
an enthralling game at St Mathews Farm. This gave Collaroy only a 50/50 chance of sneaking into third place, but when
Manly Leagues beat Long Reef by one wicket in a thriller at Kierle Park 1, Collaroy had taken a small but giant leap forward
heading into the semis.
In the first semi at Passmore 1, Long Reef were 4/48 before batting well as a team to make a useful 203. In a game of
continual twists and turns Cromer were in strife at 3/6 but battled their way out of trouble and were in good shape at 5/138.
Then a late bowling flourish from Long Reef legend Jonathon Hynes decided the match, Long Reef eliminating the Minor
Premiers with a 52 run victory.
No one knew it yet, but this meant the second semi final between Manly Leagues and Collaroy Plateau was, effectively, the
premiership decider. The seasoned Manly Leagues side had their younger opponents on the ropes at 8/58, but a wagging tail
got the Plateau to 102, Chris Wiles top scoring with 18. Ultimately, it would prove the turning point, Wiles also weighing in
with the ball, taking 6/24 from 21 overs in a Man of the Match performance, Manly Leagues falling 22 runs short under the
undeniable pressure of a semi final run chase.
And so it was that Collaroy Plateau, against the odds, were the highest ranked team to qualify for the Grand Final. It would
be an enticing battle between youth and experience in the Grand Final. Courageously, the sides played 32.4 overs in the
atrocious conditions. Collaroy were in some bother at 5/53, though still going better than in the semi they won. We'll never
know what would have happened had the rain not intervened, Collaroy deserved winners of their fourth Des Sainsbury
Shield, their previous wins coming in 1973/4, 2003/4 and 2007/8.
This was the only Grade in which the Premiers, Minor Premiers and Runners Up came from three different teams, and that
perhaps speaks well for the semi final format we have.

SIXTH GRADE - THE ALEX ANDERSON SHIELD
The MWCA has the stated aim of a Presidents Cup competition, designed to provide a transitionary competition from junior
to senior cricket under the guidance of senior cricketers. The rules were widened this year to allow a minimum of 4 players
aged under 20, and a maximum of 4 players aged between 20 and 40. Most, but not all teams, would have met this
requirement in this Grade in 2010/11. But that's OK. In reality, the President Cup rules have become more a guide to which
teams will be given preference to register for the lowest grade, rather than a law to be strictly applied.
Collaroy Plateau, many of them Seventh Grade premiers in 2009/10, produced a classic Presidents' Cup side, bursting with
talented teenagers but at times with over 200 years of experience in the slips, especially when John Jackson was playing.
Yet it was Long Reef who emerged as competition leaders before Christmas, their blend of youth and (extreme) experience
working well during the early, cooler months. But Collaroy shook them off with an outright win at Dee Why Oval in early
December and then Cromer emerged as the Plateau's main threat, knocking them over in a one dayer on January 15,
Collaroy's only loss of the regular season.
By Round 14 Collaroy had emerged as clear Minor Premiers, Cromer also winning consistently to secure second spot. Long
Reef, despite winning only one of their last six games, hung on for third while Manly Leagues held off the talented Manly
Warringah District for fourth spot. Special mention must go to the Wakehurst Redbacks Sixth Grade side. They were the
only MWCA team to go through the season without a win, but turned up every week, never forfeited a game despite losing
key players to injury, played the game in fine spirit, enjoyed their cricket, and as the season wore on improved their
performance, Joel Willey in particular playing some pretty special innings when batting with the tail.
The 2nd v 3rd semi at Millers 1 was over almost before it began. Long Reef had limped into the finals, their nine man team
all out for 31 in just 13 overs, the prolific Scott Kenna taking 5/17, the skipper Tom Cooper snaring 3/13. It took Nick
Worsely and Matt Kenna just 6 overs to race to 0/48, Long Reef conceding defeat.
Had Cromer known that the Grand Final would be washed put, they might have come and watched their fate play out at
Nolans 5. Manly Leagues, a club known for timing its run, produced their best bowling and fielding performance of the
season, bundling out the Minor Premiers for 105, the Grade's leading wicket taker Ben O'Brien returning stunning figures of
7/18 from 18.5 overs. Manly Leagues were 0/31 in reply at stumps, a major boilover virtually assured.
But the following day Collaroy Plateau were re-energised. Mitch Curran returned serve with his own 7/18, albeit off 18
overs instead of O'Brien's 18.5, straightening the ball onto the stumps during a spell that yielded seven LBWs. But at 8/54
Manly Leagues teenagers, and former Peninsula Juniors, Jeremy Toolin and Angus Mackenzie commenced a partnership
that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats for the next two hours, Toolin the attacker, Mackenzie solid as a rock. But
when Toolin was adjudged LBW to the Collaroy captain (also named Angus Mackenzie) and 13 year old Aaron Mahbood
was bowled, the Leagues Club had lost by 9 runs. Sunday, the 13th of March 2011 will live in infamy for the Manly Leagues
Club. All three teams had started the day well positioned to advance to their respective Grand Finals, only to end the day
with no survivors, having lost all 30 wickets for just 240 runs.
Only 13 balls were bowled in the Grand Final, Cromer 1/2. The Grand Final washout must have been particularly
disappointing for the Cromer side, who's semi final experience had also been something of a non-event. Collaroy Plateau,
however, had hardly put a foot wrong all season, thoroughly deserving to win the Club's first Alex Anderson Shield.

T/20 – THE MIKE PAWLEY CUP & T/20 PLATE
The MWCA's T/20 program developed significantly during 2010/11. In its second year participation increased from 8 teams
from 6 different clubs to 12 teams from 9 different clubs. Teams placed 1-4 in 2009/10 were ranked in that order, with other
teams ranked acording to size of club and number of teams entered. To make up a 12th team there was also the introduction
of an MWCA Barbarians team under the management of MWCA Vice President Brenden Ball. The later starting time on a
Sunday was also generally well received, however while most teams prefer the 3pm start, a substantial number of teams
would like to kick off earlier in the day.
At the completion of the pool games the teams were ranked again, the top six paired off to play a knockout series for the
Mike Pawley Cup, the remaining teams to complete for the inaugural T/20 Plate.
There were some surprise packets in the teams who qualified for Mike Pawley Cup, Wakehurst B, Cromer B and Manly
League all springing some upsets despite starting the season ranked outside the top six. In the qualifying finals, Cromer
BBQs were drawn to play their club-mates Cromer B on Nolans 1 and, sure enough, the B side prevailed in one of the
boilovers of the season. Wakehurst Redbacks also sprung an upset win over Manly Leagues, the two B teams joining the
much fancied Wakehurst Redbacks A and Harbord Bowling Club A in the semi finals.
However, there would be no miracles for the B sides in the semi finals. The Wakehurst A side, undefeated in winning the
tournament in 2009/10, continued their unbeaten run with a 47 run win over their club-mates. In the other semi Cromer B ,
despite giving the star studded Harbord Bowling side a scare, fell 15 runs short in their run chase.
Meanwhile, Long Reef and Collaroy had qualified for the T/20 Plate Final which was to be played as the first part of a
Double Header at Nolans 1. In warm conditions the Plate final was arguably the game of the season, Collaroy racing out to a
big lead thanks to 78 from 17 year old opener Daniel Schimek. Long Reef chased valiantly, increasing their run rate just
when they needed to and were closing in on the total until 16 year old David Morris bowled a cool final over.
In the big one Wakehurst Redbacks A, undefeated in nine games since the inception of the MWCA T/20 in 2009, batted first
but early wickets had them under pressure, Dale Pymble and Glen Langby turning the screws. The defending Cup
Champions made just 9/110 from their 20 overs, Harbord Bowling Club peeling that off in just 12 overs, Zaven Jordan
scoring a brusing 61 of 20 odd balls. Harbord Bowling Club had won their first Mike Pawley Cup.
In addition to being presented with the Cup, Harbord Bowling were also the recipient of twelve $100 vouchers generously
donated by Mike Pawley Sports. The decision to name the T/20 Cup after Mike Pawley had been made during an email
exchange prior to a Deegate's meeting that night. It was decided to approach Mike to see if he would accept the naming after
that meeting. But before the MWCA could infiorm Mike of its plans, he made the $1200 pledge, completely unaware that
the Committee had decided to name its premier T/20 Premiership the Mike Pawley Cup.
The addition of the T/20 competition is an exciting development for the MWCA and its players. Its like having an Amco
Cup, Challenge Cup or FA Cup competition. The take up is highest among young players and your Association is playing
more Sunday cricket, which is appreciated by players who work on Saturdays and adds a unique atmosphere. And the
cricket is fast, tense and enterprising, tactics still important, games still shifting in momentum.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
The Club Championship was reintroduced by the MWCA in 2009/10, when it was won by Harbord Bowling Club (???).
The Club Champions are determined on the basis of accumulated competition points according to the following table:

Only 17 points separated the top two Clubs this season, and that shows the real value in the concept. One can envisage a
situation where teams, playing otherwise dead rubbers in the late rounds, will also be playing a match on which the Club
Championship could depend, thus enriching the season for all. It does not hurt that a grand piece of silverware has been
purchased to celebrate the achievement.

The Club Chanpionship has a rich history in the MWCA, previously known as the “Onoto Pen” Club Championship which
was recorded in Annual Reports dating back to the 1930s. The MWCA hopes to pull together the strands of that history in
future additions of the Annual Report, when research time permits.

HISTORY
First Grade - The Clifton Leake Shield
The Clifton Leake Shield is awarded annually to the club winning the association’s premier grade competition. Mr.
Leake President of the association from 1931 - 1943, presented the shield for competition in season 1939-40.
The original shield was presented to the Manly Warringah RL Club after winning the competition in season 199091 when space on the shield was exhausted. The Shield remains in the club to this day. A replacement shield
perpetuating Leake’s name was instigated the following season.

Second Grade - The Lyle Pearce Shield
The Beau Brummel Shield was first competed for “A” Grade’s 2nd division in 1947-48. The shield was donated by
Mr Arthur Little, a Vice-President of the association who later served as Patron. The Beau Brummel Shield has
remained in the possesion of the association since 1988, when space on the shield was exhausted. The association replaced it the following year with a shield named in honour of Lyle Pearce.
Mr. Pearce was an office bearer of the association for 26 seasons, fourteen as President. He has also been Patron of the association since 1995. During his time as an office bearer, he has also been a delegate to the Manly
Warringah Pittwater Sporting Union, a delegate to the NSW Junior Cricket Union and has filled the roles of
Treasurer and Senior Vice President of the Warringah Cricket Club.

Third Grade - The J.D. Durham Shield
John Davidson Durham is one of the most significant figures in over a century of districts cricket in NSW. He was
originally involved with the Balmain & District CA where he was Hon. Secretary from 1906-1919, President from
1919-1943 and Patron 1943-1953. After moving to the Manly area, he was a Vice President of the Manly Warringah CA from 1939-43 and President from 1944-50. He also filled a number of officces for the NSW Junior Cricket
Union, Including Hon. Secretary 1906-07 and 1939-1945, President from 1916-1939 and Hon. Treasurer from
1945 until his death in 1958. He was made a life member of the New South Wales C. A. In 1943, of our association in 1950 and the NSWJCU in 1954. The NSW Districts Cricket Association continues to run the John Durham
Shield as an inter-district competition for under 19 players.
The A3 grade was initialised in 1964-65 after growing player numbers saw the need for an additional “A” grade.
The shield presented that season was named in honour of Alan Lee (see B1 Grade notes). However, the grade
was not contested again until 1972-73, this time for the J. D. Durham Shield. The original shield was presented
for 5th grade competition from 1958-59 to 1960-61, for the under 16 and D Grade competition from 1961-62 to
1966-67.

Fourth Grade - The Alan Lee Shield
From 1948-49 to 1961-62, the 3rd grade competed for Wigney Shield. This was a donation to the association in
1947-48 by A. E. Wigney & Sons for “B” grade competition. In 1959-60 and 1961-62, the grading system saw 3rd
grade split into 2 divisions, with division 2 playing for the Campbell Shield. With the renaming of grades 1962-63,
the B1 grade continued to compete for the Wigney Shield until 1964-65. The following season saw this grade
compete for the Alan Lee Shield, originally awarded for the inaugural A3 competition. Alan “Pappy” Lee was a
long serving Vice-President and committee member of the association, serving in several voluntary capacities.
Additionally, he acted on the committee of the Manly Warringah District Club for several years. He is also the
father of former Australian Women’s test player Helen Lee, and NSW player Terence Lee.

Fifth Grade - The Des Sainsbury Shield
From 1948-49 through to 1961-62, the 4th grade competed for the W. D. Thomson Shield. The 1962-63vseason
saw 4th grade renamed B2 grade, with the grade playing for the Campbell Shield up to the 1964-65 season. The
following season saw teams in this grade compete for the Wigney Shield, previously awarded to the B1 premiers.
The Wigney Shield continued to be presented to the B2 premiers up to 1987-88. The following season saw teams
in this grade compete for the Des Sainbury Shield, which continues to this day. This original shield is in the possession of the association, having been awarded to the C3 premiers from 1976-77 to 1986-87.
A former mayor of Manly, Mr. Sainsbury was president of the association from 1955 to 1965, and later served as
patron from 1991 until his death in 1995. He was instrumental in the foundation of the Saturday Morning Boys
Competition, which has evolved into the Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association. He was also the founding
president of the Manly Warringah Sporting Union.

B3 Grade - The Alex Anderson Shield
With competition numbers expanding, the association instigated the B3 grade for season 1975-76. The following
season saw the Alex Anderson Shield presented, named after the former association secretary and president.
In addition to his tireless work for our association, Mr. Anderson also served as secretary of the Manly Warringah
District Club, was the first secretary of the Manly Warringah Sporting Union, was a delegate to the NSW Junior
Cricket Union as well as serving on it’s committee, and was the first senior vice-president of the Warringah
Cricket Club. He also served as patron of the Association from 1985 until his death in 1991.
