Pre-Haas / Economics

Pre-Haas / Economics
This list combines both Pre-Haas and Economics. The advice provided here most pertains to Pre-Haas
majors, but the pre-reqs for Economics and Haas is essentially the same with the exception of UGBA 10
(not an Econ pre-req) and Econ 100A/100B (not a pre-req for Haas, but is an upper division
requirement.
Specifically, UGBA 101A and 101B. Econ 100A and 100B will fulfill the requirement, but if you take Econ
100A, you’ll have to take another Haas course to make up the difference. Consult the website if you’re
confused. Consult the social science & humanities section for advice for majoring in Economics. Before
the recommendations, here is a list of everything to keep in mind for your first two years.
Haas pre-reqs: http://haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/ucb_prereq.html
Econ pre-reqs: https://www.econ.berkeley.edu/undergrad/prospective/freshmen
Haas Prerequisites
• UGBA 10
• Econ 1 - can be waived if received a 5 on both AP Macro & Micro or getting a 5, 6, or 7 on IB
Econ Macro/Micro, however this is a great preparatory course into upper division economics, and
is recommended despite transfer credit
• Statistics 20 or 21 - 20 is general, 21 is business specific
• 2 Semesters of Calculus - the first semester can be waived if you got a 5 on AP Calc BC or a
5, 6, or 7 on IB Math. You can choose the 16 series, 1 series, or something more advanced like
53/54. Choose the sequence that is best for you! The 1 series is the preferred math series for
most majors, and so will give you the most opportunities. You should choose the series based on
your own interests, and the major(s) that you’re interested in.
• 2 Semesters of English - this is required by nearly every major. If you received a 4 or 5 on AP
Lang or a 4 on AP Lit, you are exempt from the first semester. If you received a 5 on AP Lit, you
are exempt from both halves. If you received a 5, 6, or 7 on IB Literature, you are also exempt
from both halves.
* These pre-reqs should be completed by the end of second semester sophomore year. We
recommend you not taking UGBA 10 and Econ 1 in the same semester, as it is important to focus on
these courses individually and to do your best in both.
Double/Back-Up Major Tips for Haas
• Check the prerequisites for the majors that you are interested in, and take a pre-req that gives
you insight on the major. For instance, if you’re interested in psychology, you should take Psych
1. If you’re interested in computer science, you should take CS 61A.
• If your back-up major is Economics and believe you are sufficiently prepared for Economics here,
you should take Econ 1 your first semester.
Recommendations: Choose four classes from the list below!
• Math (3-4 units)
• Key Pre-requisite 1 (for Econ back-up majors, Econ 1. 4 units.)
• Key Pre-requisite 2 (for your back-up major, such as Psych 1, CS 61A, etc. 3-4 units)
• R&C (4 units) (if aren’t exempt)
• Breadth course (2-5 units)
• Seminar / Decal (1-3 units)
