PRESS STATEMENT COUNTING OF BALLOT PAPERS AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF ELECTION RESULTS Ballot papers will be counted at 88 Counting Centres. There are eight are Principal Counting Centres where ballot counts for respective electoral divisions will be tallied. The Counting Centres for each electoral division is attached at the Annex. Counting will begin as soon as the ballot boxes from each Polling Station have reached the counting locations after the close of the poll at 8 pm on Saturday, 6 May 2006. A candidate may appoint counting agents to witness the counting of ballot papers. Admission of counting agents to specific counting places will be by special passes issued by the Returning Officer. Election results will be announced by the Returning Officer at the Announcement Centre located at the Elections Department. The announcements will be broadcast live over the local TV and radio networks. Where the total number of overseas voters lawfully entitled to vote at the election in that electoral division is less than the difference between the numbers of votes given to the two candidates/groups of candidates, the Returning Officer shall declare the candidate or group of candidates to whom the greatest number of votes is given to be elected. Where the total number of overseas voters lawfully entitled to vote at the election in that electoral division is equal to or more than the difference between the number of votes given to the two candidates or groups of candidates, i.e. the overseas votes have impact on the outcome of the election, the Returning Officer shall declare the number of votes cast in Singapore in favour of each candidate/group of candidates at the election, and the date and premises at which the votes cast by the overseas voters will be counted. Counting of Overseas Votes The overseas votes will be counted on Wednesday, 10 May at 2.00 pm at ITE Balestier. Thereafter, the Returning Officer will announce the results of the counts. For electoral divisions where the overseas votes have impact on the election outcome, the Returning Officer shall declare the candidate or group of candidates to whom the greatest number of votes is given, after the overseas votes have been aggregated, to be elected.
