PMI Today May 2012
plan to initiate webinars for the Asia
Pacific time zones (http://id.vc.pmi.org/
Webinars.aspx).
Building Project Management
Capacity in Africa
A national project management conference was held in September in Abuja,
Nigeria. The conference was a not-forprofit, private sector initiative aimed at
institutionalizing project management
best practices in Nigeria. Rotating conference locations throughout Africa will
begin in 2012. The goal is to build capacity
for project management best practices using subject matter experts in international
development. The community will provide
expertise in development support for the
PMI chapters in Africa and international
agencies such as African Development
Bank, United Nations, Canadian International Development Agency, International
Development Research Centre and Economic Community of West African States.
The community is currently working
with the PMI Consulting Community of
Practice to form mentoring relationships
between senior project managers
in North America, Europe and Africa.
Latin America Congress
(Rio de Janeiro)
The PMI Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Chapter
and the Inter-American Development
Bank are the sponsors of a one-day
congress in June 2012 on international
development and project management
within Latin America. The community is
collaborating to identify global and local
subject matter experts as speakers.
Post Disaster Recovery
Reaching out to the PMI Japan chapter
to help with recovery following the
earthquake and tsunami last year, the
community held a two-day virtual
symposium on project management
application in disasters from an
international development perspective.
The virtual symposium had 600 PMI
registrants and can be found on the
PMI International Development
Community of Practice website. As
a result of the symposium, a team is
updating the PMI Project Management
Methodology for Post Disaster
Reconstruction to reflect current

project and program management and
disaster recovery standards.

Knowledge Management Leader Paola
Morgese, PE, PMP, and Marketing
Service Leader Monica Gonzalez, met
with the PMI Southern Italy Chapter
(PMI-SIC) during a January seminar
themed “Sustainability and project
management – Sustainable projects,”
at the Department of Structural Engineering of the University of Naples
Federico II.
Ms. Morgese discussed definitions of
projects, environmental, social and
economic sustainability; how to integrate sustainability into the processes
and the knowledge areas of the project
management; and examples of sustainable projects.
A brainstorming session on subjects
including how to integrate sustainability in knowledge management areas
concluded the seminar.
“The event on sustainability was
definitely a turning event in the
life of the chapter, as it gave the
opportunity to project managers
and [those interested in] project
management in Southern Italy
to understand how the PMI
communities of practice can catalyze
the value of knowledge transfer on
specific subjects, such as that of
sustainability,” said Giacomo Franco,
president of the PMI Southern Italy
Chapter and a subscriber to the PMI
Global Sustainability Community
of Practice.
