BASKETBALL EXCELLENCE PROGRAM COURSE OUTLINE Unit Category: Direct Interceptive Activities Unit: Basketball Unit Description: This unit involves students in learning about, planning for and playing basketball. They will be involved both in coaching and refereeing of basketball. In addition, the students will conduct basketball competitions, undertaking risk assessments and using appropriate safety strategies. Varsity College now offers basketball as a subject for students in Years 10, 11 and 12. It is a vocational learning subject in the recreation stream and will be run over a two year period, providing students with four credits toward their Queensland Certificate of Education. The program comprises both theoretical and practical elements, though the emphasis will be on active participation in basketball as specificed by Queensland Studies Authority. Varsity College boasts a high class indoor basketball facility and all equipment necessary to assist success. The program is headed by Mr Adam Darragh. Adam has played for three National Basketball League teams, including the Brisbane Bullets during an illustrious career as a professional basketballer and brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge. In addition, Adam has a number of contacts in the wider basketball community assisting in coaching and participation in elite competitions. Further assistance is provided by players and staff from the Gold Coast’s very own NBL team, Gold Coast Blaze. ch f o ns o i ps mp i a h s h r c e n t ar p & r e t c ara There is an annual program fee per student which will assist with the purchase of state of the art uniforms for training and competition, travel and tournament costs, ongoing purchase of equipment and maintenance of the indoor facility. The program is scheduled to operate within standard school hours. Students wishing to partcipate in this exciting subject should register their interest with either Mr Harriott or Mr Darragh in the Physical Education Staffroom located in the Sports Hall. As par t of the Varsity College Basketball Excellence Program, students will have access to both the Gold Coast Goannas (ABA) and Gold Coast Blaze (NBL) teams. GOLD COAST GOANNAS & GLIDERS Varsity College Basketball Excellence ( VBE) Head Coach and current Goanna’s player, Adam Darragh, has established a strong par tnership with the Goanna’s which will see the VCE students having the oppor tunity to attend and take par t in training with the Gold Coast ABA team. This is a valuable oppor tunity for students to prac tice their sk ills amongst some of the best senior players on the Gold Coast. GOLD COAST BLAZE VBE students will have access to players and staff of the Gold Coast ’s ver y own NBL team. Blaze players such as James Har vey will attend school training sessions upon invitation offering their priceless professional k nowledge and experience to our students. COMPETITION Throughout the school year, VBE students will take par t in interschool spor t competition as well as organised games between schools who also have excellence programs, such as, Hillcrest, Palm Beach Currumbin and Helensvale State High Schools.
