feature transcendent DESIGN D BY GINA MAKKAR PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN TRIGIANI Driving along the stately boulevards of Lorne Park, it’s easy to see why the village was once considered cottage country. First established in the 1800s along the south side of Lakeshore Road, the seasonal resort area was named after the Marquess of Lorne, Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883. Accessible by rail, steamboat or carriage, the area flooded with families eager for a summer of leisure. Back then, lots were sold to those willing to build a “neat and respectable” home or cottage costing not less than $400. Today, Lorne Park still radiates with the charm of narrow, tree-lined avenues, large lots, and is home to a wealth of beautiful properties. A recent project by Parkyn Design proves that design can tip its hat to the bygone era by marrying beauty and function that blends seamlessly into the existing landscape. Designed by custom home designer David Small of David Small Designs, the manor-style home is tucked into a storybook setting with a sprawling lot that backs onto a wooded ravine. As visitors come up the drive, the natural tones in the exposed timber trusses and matching shutters create instant impact. Curved gables and eyebrow dormers create visual interest and contrast against the rubble stone exterior and cedar shake roof. Tania Parkyn, Principal of Parkyn Design, says the home conveys a mix of eclectic style with a little contemporary flair. During the design process, every architectural element was assessed and modified to reflect the ultimate in what her client aspired to achieve. Tania says much of the success in design is the ability to drill down and uncover the core details to really understand who the client is and how they live. Over the holidays, the large fireplace and mantel is dedicated to the Jolly man himself, with stockings and garlands decoratively hung. In this case, the client’s casual and relaxed yet elegant style incorporates a welcoming feel that still reflects classic good taste. A key factor in achieving the look was the choice of materials. “There is a high contrast between organic and contemporary and this is very important,” says Tania. “It’s that friction and tension that really creates a mood.” Every element of the home blends seamlessly together to create a stately and eclectic result. In the entryway, reclaimed elm floors and linentextured furniture provide a rustic contrast to the dramatic rubble stone wall. Tucked in the corner, iron spindles and a cream-coloured runner create a lovely stairwell. Decorated for the holidays, the décor mixes organic elements with a hint of glamour. Both the snowflake pillows perched on the hallway sofa and an antique sled add a whimsical touch. Fir boughs peek through the openings between the stairway spindles and provide an organic yet striking element. With over 5,500 sq. ft. of living space and the rear of the home facing north, Tania says the balance of light that creates the mood for the home is very important. To the right of the entrance, cathedral ceilings soar in the dining room. Gold and silver accents glitter atop the rich cherry dining table and sideboard. Intricate wall mouldings and flax-coloured drapes add a layer of warmth and texture. Crystal chandeliers and wall sconces throw a little sparkle and create the perfect backdrop for entertaining. A warm and eclectic passageway connects the front hall to the main living area. In the great room, beams streak across the 20 ft. ceilings and tuck seamlessly into the wood trims of the high transom windows to create visual interest. Strategically placed arched openings in the upper hallway look down on the great room and flood the space with airiness and light.
