OPEN HOUSE
Be sure to come out and participate in PGRC’s
22nd Annual Open House Fly-In on Saturday 11
May. Bring your family and an airplane or
two, and have a good time. We welcome
members of our neighboring clubs in Maryland,
DC, and Virginia to come out and fly as our
guests. There is no registration or landing fee.
Our raffle prize will be a 40-size ARF trainer
and engine. Volunteers for food preparation,
raffle, concession, and other chores are needed
to help make this a successful event. In
addition, we are looking for a few of our
members with trainers to give our spectators a
chance to experience RC flying. See CD
Charlie Gettier if you can help. For the first
time this year, we are co-promoting the MNCPPC’s annual Marlborough Day event
(http://marlboroughday.org/), which will be
going on at the same time a few miles away in
Upper Marlboro. This is an opportunity for
families out and about on this pre-Mother’s
Day Saturday to take in both events. Our
friends at Marlborough Day will be
reciprocating by promoting the PGRC Open
House at their event.

APRIL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
New Attendees. Dennis Swartzel, an existing
RC enthusiast recently relocated to Maryland
from Key West, was in attendance. Dennis
credited Harold Thompson for introducing him
to PGRC… William Jenkins III is new in the
hobby and is anxious to learn to fly… Junior
member Jonathan Parker attended with his
father Vance (USMC Retired). Jonathan

recently completed his first buddy-box flight.
Welcome Dennis, William, Jonathan, and
Vance.
Treasury. Steve Baker reported $11,755 in the
treasury after significant purchases during the
month for the new kiosk shed and foundation
gravel. The previous month’s BG&E bill was
$78.
Safety Briefing. Edgar Hopson presented a
succinct safety briefing, renewing awareness of
a number of common-sense safety-related items
as we start the new flying season. Edgar also
made the attendees aware of several DVDs on
model construction techniques that can be
made available on loan.
Drones. Alan initiated a lengthy discussion of
the current public focus on drones in US air
space with the statement “We do not fly
drones.” Because of the public’s tendency to
confuse drones and model aircraft particularly first-person-view (FPV) models we believe that PGRC’s proximity to
Washington and the local news media makes us
particularly open to scrutiny. Members of the
news media have already contacted several of
our members, probing for information about
“drones”. We must all be aware of PGRC’s
vulnerability concerning this issue, and abide
by the letter and spirit of the rules published by
AMA. The final thought left with the
members is that we must all use common sense
in flying any model aircraft at the field.
PGRC Kiosk. We have dubbed our new
concession stand and shed the “PGRC Kiosk”
- principally because “PGRC Concession
Stand” would not have fit conveniently on the
new sign that Alan had commissioned. He
displayed the new sign at the meeting before its
installation on the shed.
Concession Volunteers Wanted. Ken
Thompson is looking for help with concession
duties for the Open House. See Ken if you can
help. (410-721-7960, rcpilot66@msn.com)
Bowie Events. Byron Smith discussed the
upcoming Bowie Fest on1 June and the Bowie
Memorial Day Parade on 25 May. PGRC
participation in both events is important for
public relations and for attracting new members
to the Club. See Byron (301-390-8712,
smithb@speakeasy.net) if you can assist with
Bowie Fest. See Charlie Gettier if you can help
with the Memorial Day Parade.
Field Courtesies. Alwin Alleyne brought up
some concerns regarding courtesy and
common-sense behavior at the field. He has
observed folks running up large-displacement
engines (e.g., 50 cc gas) for extended periods of
time in front of the pavilion. This is disruptive
and annoying for anyone who happens to be in
the pits or pavilion area. PGRC’s commonsense rule has been that engine break-in, or
extended running, should be done back near the
picnic tables in front of the equipment shed not in the pit area. Alwin also reported
incidents of helicopter pilots hovering near the
flight line while other fixed-wing pilots were
flying. PGRC’s specific rule is that, when both
helicopter and fixed-wing pilots are at the field,
a time-sharing arrangement is in effect whereby
helicopter flying at the flight line is allowed
only for the first 15 minutes of every hour,
while fixed-wing pilots stand down. An
additional accommodation for helicopter pilots,
particularly for hovering and other maneuvers
performed close-in to the pilot, is that they may
fly back from the flight line, at the south end of
the field, keeping significant space between
themselves and pilots at the flight line. Again,
common courtesy and common sense should
prevail.
Raffle / 50-50. Antonio Applewhite missed
out on $88.50 in the 50-50 drawing. Eric
Holmes won still another mini electric
helicopter in the raffle.

SUCCESSFUL SWAP SHOP. Thanks to
everyone who contributed to our successful
Swap Shop on 13 April. We were able to clear
a bunch of hobby equipment out of the Club
House while adding significantly to our coffers.
Special thanks go to Tim Williams for
administering the sale of Club-owned
equipment, and to Scott Wiley and Elwyn
Boykin for their contributions of models and
materials to the cause. Short-order cooks Alan
Goodman, Bob Gensler, and Charlie Gettier
provided a hearty breakfast for the shoppers.
MODEL ROCKET LAUNCH. A group of
junior Civil Air Patrol cadets visited our field
for a model rocket launch on Saturday 27
April. From all accounts, the launch went well
and our visitors had an enjoyable afternoon.
Shown above are Cadet Airman Waverly Jung,
Staff Sgt Knight, Cadet Airman (and PGRC
junior member) Kyle Jung, and Lt Sanizone.
Shown below is PGRC’s own rocketeer,
Wernher von Jackson, who brought his own
launch vehicle to the event. (This one did not
go BOOM!) Photos by Alice Jung.

SEQUESTRATION GARAGE SALE. Mr
DJ has an impressive list of model aircraft and
associated hobby items for sale - much too
many items to be included in this newsletter.
Check out his RC Universe link below:

Contact him at mrdj.reed7777@verizon.net.
FOR SALE. Saito FG-20 (1.25 c.i.) fourstroke gas engine, nearly new (~10 flights).
$225. Bill Baldiga, 703-931-1338.

Note that you don’t have to be a former TOC
champion to qualify. Patience, time, and
willingness to help folks master the
fundamentals of RC flight are the key
prerequisites. This is an important function of
the Club. It keeps new members in the hobby,
and helps to retain existing members who need
brushing up on their flying skills. Please
contact Charlie Gettier, or just show up on
Tuesday afternoons, if you can help.
FLIGHT INSTRUCTORS NEEDED .
Now that Eastern Daylight time has returned,
the weather is warming up, and the winds are
subsiding (lol), we are looking for additional
volunteer flight instructors to help during the
Tuesday evening training sessions. Last year,
Alan Goodman, Charlie Gettier, Tim Williams,
and Roland Jackson were generally busy every
Tuesday helping new and returning student
pilots. We could really use an additional two
or three instructors.
DICK PALACE
We have learned that long-time PGRC
member from years gone by, Dick Palace,
passed away recently from a heart attack.
He was 79. Dick was known for building
exquisite scale plastic models. Testament
to his building skills are several of his
models that are on display in the Air and
Space Museum. Dick was a long-time
friend of many PGRC members and an
avid pylon racer. He will be missed.
