Treasury. Steve reported a total of $8,727 in
the treasury. We currently have 162 paid
members.
Naval Aviation / Carrier Operations
Presentation. The highlight of the meeting
was Mark Kikta’s excellent audio visual
presentation on naval aviation and carrier
operations. Mark provided the presentation in
response to interest generated at the field this
summer by several members. The presentation
touched on the history of naval aviation,
including photos of the first carriers and first
carrier aircraft. Mark also presented
information regarding modern carrier physical
topside configuration, carrier weapon systems,

aircraft launch and recovery systems and
procedures, crew responsibilities, and aircraft
departure and approach procedures. Mark even
brought some mementos from his last S-3
flight: in-flight photos taken by his wingman,
the tail hook from his aircraft, and a piece of
the arresting cable from his last landing. The
members were very appreciative of Mark’s
presentation, and continued discussing points
of the presentation with him well after the end
of the meeting. The Club is fortunate to have a
member with such a fascinating career as Mark,
who is also willing to share his career
knowledge and experiences with us. Thanks
again, Mark.
Dues Restructuring. A short discussion was
held concerning the proposed restructuring of
PGRC dues. Details of the proposal are
provided below. No real concerns were voiced
by the members. Additional discussion and a
vote on the proposal will be held at the
November meeting.
PGRC Picnic. Harold Thompson thanked
everyone who participated the helped with
setup and clean-up of the picnic on 30
September.
Orienteering Group. Alan reported on a group
of orienteering enthusiasts who descended on
the field one day this month, wandering over
the flying field while our members were
attempting to fly. He contacted Kyle Lowe,
our landlord POC at M-NCPPC, who reiterated
that PGRC - as rent payer and maintainer of
the field - has exclusive use of the flying field
area. There is also a significant safety issue
involved if others are on the field while we are
flying. The Park Police phone number will be
posted at the field for our members to call, if
the orienteering or any other group appears and
refuses to leave. Note that groups other than
PGRC are free to use other areas of the
property: the acreage at the top of the hill, the
perimeter road around our field, horse paths in
the woods, etc. We urge our members to use
common sense and civility if visiting groups
are encountered at the field.
Raffle / 50-50. Harold Thompson won an
electric P-38 in the raffle. Annette Everhart
was not present to claim the $29 prize in the
50-50 drawing.

MINIMIZE SNAIL MAIL. This message is
particularly for those members who recently
joined the Club. If you have an e-mail address,
and are currently getting THE FLYER via the
US mail, consider getting your newsletter via email and let us remove your name from the
snail mail list. Your newsletter gets to you
quicker and in color via e-mail; and you will be
saving the Club money (approximately $1.00

per issue delivered) - not to mention wear and
tear on the newsletter production staff and
equipment. Also, if you have stopped getting
the e-FLYER because you have changed your email address, please send me your current

Charlie Gettier, cgettier@comcast.net
our membership, the Board believes this
simplification of our dues structure would help
us to increase revenue without an across-theboard dues increase.
The Club needs to increase revenue to cover
increasing costs. For example, our single
highest regular monthly expense is for gas for
the mowers and tractor. In 2004, when we last
raised dues, the average cost of regular gas was
less than $2.00 per gallon. Increased revenue
would also allow us to plan for significant
maintenance items and improvements to the
facility, such as the anticipated need to resurface the runway in a few years.
It should be noted that members of the Board
are not immune to the effects of the proposed
change. Over a quarter of the current Board is
over 65; and within a year, over a third of the
Board will be over 65.
PGRC COMMUNITY OUTREACH. PGRC
is planning a presentation to be given at an
assisted living facility, sometime in the January
timeframe. The presentation would involve
bringing large-scale models, particularly war
birds, into the facility and discussing the hobby,
model building and flying. We feel that such a
presentation would be of interest to the
residents - particularly WW II veterans.
Members who would consider participating in
this program should contact Dave Deacon or
Charlie Gettier.
The proposal would also include a
simplification of the de-rating schedule for
first-time members joining during the year.
The following table shows the current and
proposed schedule:
Current
Between January 1
and June 30 - full
annual fee; between
July 1 and September
30 - three quarters
annual fee; between
October 1 and
November 30 - one
half annual fee.
DUES RE-STRUCTURING
The Board is proposing a change to the PGRC
dues schedule. The most prominent piece of
the proposal, which represents the first change
to the PGRC dues structure since June 2004,
would be the elimination of the senior discount.
General membership, junior, and family dues
would remain the same, as would the initial
field assessment.
Proposed
Between January 1
and July 31 - full
annual fee; between
August 1 and
November 30 - one
half annual fee.
As in the current schedule, new members
joining during December of the year would pay
the full annual fee, which would be applied to
December and the full following year.
In accordance with the PGRC constitution and
bylaws, all changes to the dues structure must
be approved by a vote of the general
membership. This proposal will be discussed
and voted on at the November meeting.
The Board feels that $75 for all non-junior
members is a fair price for everyone to pay, in
light of the benefits of PGRC membership. It
is also comparable with dues required by other
clubs in the area. With the continued aging of
