Dues can be paid at the meetings, or can be mailed to: Steve Baker 12215 Malin Lane Bowie, MD 20715 PGRC BOARD ELECTIONS. Election of PGRC Board members was held at the November meeting. Alan Goodman and Tim Williams were re-elected to continue for another three years on the Board; and Hernan Garcia was elected to his first term. Congratulations to Alan, Tim, and Hernan. We also wish to thank outgoing Board member Byron Smith for his service to the Club over the past three years. Be sure to include your address, phone number, and AMA Number on the check. You must be an active AMA member to fly at the field. DIRECTIONS TO PGRC FIELD (South of Bowie, MD) Take US Rt. 301 south approx. 3 miles south of Rt. 214. Turn east on Swanson Rd. and follow the PGRC signs. PGRC’S WEB SITE REVISED DUES STRUCTURE. The proposal to revise the PGRC dues structure was passed nearly unanimously (one nay vote) at the November meeting. The most important element of the proposal, which represents the Visit with PGRC on the Internet: http://www.pgrcclub.com/ 1 first change to the PGRC dues structure since June 2004, is the elimination of the senior discount. Dues for general membership, junior, and family remain the same, as does the initial field assessment. The new structure also simplifies the de-rating schedule for new members joining midyear: folks joining after 31 July pay half the regular annual rate. Rossi motors are now being offered by a company in California. The motor is ventilated by a Mac tuned pipe that bumps up the horsepower significantly over the standardissue header and muffler. An 11 x 7.5 wood prop (for nostalgia sake) has been bolted on the Rossi. Eric also added Spring Air retracts to complete the UltraCote-covered model. Retail price for the ARF airframe is approximately $350. We’re looking forward to seeing this baby fly. Raffle / 50-50. A Hobby Zone Super Cub foam electric, with motor and radio, was won by first-time attendee Bob Geissler. Dennis Heffner missed out on $38 in the 50-50 drawing. NOVEMBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING Treasury. Steve reported a total of $9,000.65 in the treasury as of 10/31. The latest BG&E bill was $32.57. New Attendees. Ted Tuck from Bowie attended with his grandson. He expressed interest in learning to fly multi-copters as well as fixed-wing models. Bob Geissler and his son had visited the field for the first time the previous weekend. As self-described “complete newbies” in the hobby, they were anxious to learn more about RC at the Club meeting. Ann and John Ramos are owners of a NexSTAR trainer, which John has been flying. We hope to see this husband and wife team flying at the field next season. Marty and Matthew Goodman (Alan’s brother and nephew from California) were visiting Alan and Sharon for the Thanksgiving holiday, and decided to stop by the meeting. Welcome Ted, Bob, Ann, and John. Good to see you again, Marty and Matthew. Thanks: Mark, Basil, Hernan, Mike. Alan recognized the efforts of Mark Kikta, Basil Roper, Hernan Garcia, and Mike Saar for a recent grounds-keeping project at the end of the runway. The effort involved removal of a build-up of sod that tended to wipe off the landing gear of smaller models departing, or landing and rolling out past, the south end of the runway. Thanks, guys. Show and Tell. Eric Holmes brought in a pretty Phoenix 7 ARF pattern model from Hangar 9. He explained the term “pattern”, with which many of the members were unfamiliar, as the competitive aerobatic event format that had been popular in the 60’s before the days of IMAC scale aerobatics. The Don Lowe-designed model weighs in about 8 lbs, and is powered by a Rossi .60 (the popular Italian power plant for pattern ships back then). MINIMIZE SNAIL MAIL. This message is particularly for those members who recently joined the Club. If you have an e-mail address, and are currently getting THE FLYER via the US mail, consider getting your newsletter via email and let us remove your name from the snail mail list. Your newsletter gets to you quicker and in color via e-mail; and you will be saving the Club money (approximately $1.00 per issue delivered) - not to mention wear and tear on the newsletter production staff and equipment. Also, if you have stopped getting the e-FLYER because you have changed your email address, please send me your current address so I can update our database. Charlie Gettier, cgettier@comcast.net 2 PGRC COMMUNITY OUTREACH. PGRC is planning a visit to a local assisted living facility sometime in the January timeframe. The visit would involve bringing large-scale models, particularly war birds, into the facility and discussing the hobby, model building and flying. We feel that such a presentation would be of interest to the residents - particularly WW II veterans. Members who would consider participating in this program should contact Dave Deacon or Charlie Gettier. considering for use in charging 5-cell packs. Note that the Futaba chargers in my sample are about 20 years old. It’s possible that the chargers that come with newer equipment are designed for higher output voltage, since many modelers nowadays are using 5-cell Rx packs. Also note that all these chargers are designed for slow charging. Discharged batteries packs, whether 4-cell or 5-cell, should be charged for at least 16 hours with a wall wart charger. WALL WART CHARGERS FOR SALE. Dave Patrick Ultimate with Moki 180, RTF, $450. Seagull Extra 260 with OS160, needs receiver, $400. Twist 150 with DLE30, RTF, $500. Airfield T28 with retracts and lights (have five 4s 3000 mAh batteries also), $150 for plane, $350 with all batteries and receiver. Dewoitine D520 (brand new in box), has heavy duty retracts and scale True Turn spinner, $200. Rimfire .25 brushless motor $50 ($80 from Tower Hobbies). Glow engine starters (2), $10 each. Misc other stuff (tools, Monocote iron, hardware, etc.), prices negotiable Pictures of all can be provided to any interested buyer(s). Prices can also be negotiated if you are not interested in the Spectrum/JR receivers or if you would like the wing bags that go with each. Byron Jones, EMSMAN61@AOL.COM, (443)848-1794 Charlie Gettier There has been some discussion at the field regarding use of wall wart chargers (i.e., those that are typically packaged with transmitter/receiver radio sets) for charging 5cell NiCad or NiMH receiver packs. The output of these chargers, as indicated on the label affixed to the charger, is typically: 4.8 V DC for the receiver (Rx) pack and 9.6 V DC for the transmitter (Tx) pack. Implicit here is the recommended application for standard 4-cell Rx packs (4 x 1.2 V / cell), and 8-cell Tx packs (8 x 1.2 V / cell). Note, however, that 1.2 volts is a nominal figure for NiCad and NiMH cells, and that the open-circuit voltage of a fully charged cell is actually around 1.5 V. For this reason, these chargers are designed to deliver a bit more than 4.8 V to fully charge a 4-cell battery pack. The question is … can they fully charge a 5-cell pack? I have a bunch of these chargers lying around that I’ve collected over the years, so I decided to test the output voltage of several. The average output of 5 Futaba and JR chargers (4 Futaba and 1 JR) was about 6.5 V, while the output of my 3 Hitec chargers averaged 8.6 V. Since the voltage of a fully charged 5-cell pack is about 7.5 V, this suggests that the Futaba and JR chargers would not fully charge a 5-cell pack. However, the Hitec chargers, averaging 8.6 V output, should fully charge my 5-cell packs. REFRESHMENT STAND AND SHED. The Board has been discussing the possible addition of a prefabricated barn-type building at the south end of the parking area to serve as a permanent food preparation / sales / serving area. The building could also provide storage for portable tables, PA system and other equipment, to simplify setup and clean up for our events. Stay tuned. My recommendation here is to check the output voltage of any wall wart charger you may be 3 PGRC Events Schedule for 2013 (tentative as of December 2012) Date Event Contest / Event Director March 23 Spring Clean-Up Day N/A April 13 PGRC Swap Shop Carl Siefring May 11 Open House Fly-In Charlie Gettier (410) 757-3195 May 25 Basic-Only IMAC Dave Deacon TBD Bowie Memorial Day Parade TBD TBD Bowie Fest TBD TBD Pylon Race Steve Baker (301) 352-4580 August 3 Electric Fly-In Dave Turner (240) 417-6631 TBD CAPI IMAC Dave Deacon (410) 956-8642 TBD Pylon Race Steve Baker (301) 352-4580 Sept 14, 15 Giant-Scale Fly-In Rick Moreland (301) 261-7366 TBD Family Picnic TBD (301) 855-9226 (410) 956-8642 A Saturday evening steak party is tentative for the Giant-Scale Fly-In and a pylon race.
