Overview
Evaluation
To be completed during the 2014–2015 academic year,
the Evolve Sustainable Design Competition will challenge
architecture, engineering and design students to work
together, ideally in multi-disciplinary teams, to design a
net-zero energy and water conservation community library.
Explore the design and function of a typical community
library and develop ways to minimize its energy and water
use. At the same time, the design should provide a platform
for employees, clients and the community to experience
how sustainable building practices can be made part of
everyday life. We encourage teams to explore the design
and function of this library facility as a high performance
building.
A panel of experts will review and evaluate the submission
materials. In addressing the specific issues of the design
challenge, submissions must clearly demonstrate the
design solution’s response to the following requirements:
Awards
The jury will award the following prizes:
WINNER: $5,000
FIRST RUNNER UP: $3,500
SECOND RUNNER UP $1,500
In addition, the schools that educates the Winner, First
Runner Up, and Second Runner Up will receive equivalent
cash donations of $5,000, $3,500 and $1,500 respectively.

Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQs)
What is Net-Zero
Energy?
What is
Water-Wise?
What is a
Design Video?
The term net-zero energy may imply
many things. For the purposes of this
competition, net-zero energy shall
mean the following:
• Aggressive energy conservation
• Use of on-site renewable energy
(solar, water, wind, or earth, etc.)
• Over the course of a year, the
building shall produce as much
energy from on-site renewable
sources as it uses (or as close to
possible)
• The building shall be grid
connected and does not require
energy storage systems
Likewise, water-wise is not easily
understood. For this competition,
water-wise design shall mean:
• Aggressive water conservation
• Limited use of municipal potable
water sources
• Use of on-site water collection
and treatment (ground, natural
water source, or precipitation,
etc.)
• Use of water for energy
conservation purposes
A design video consists of a
presentation of ideas to demonstrate
the feasibility of a concept or theory.
In this case, the design video will be
presented in both the panels and the
video. Each medium is to be used to
its maximum potential (i.e. notated
diagrams for panels and/or fly
through of building model).
Typical water use for the average
Canadian is approximately 400L per
day. A target of 20L of potable water
use per day can be used as a working
benchmark.

5. ABOUT THE COMPETITION:
•
Key Definitions:
The term ‘Net-Zero Energy’ (“NZE”) may imply many
things. For the purposes of this Competition, NZE shall
mean the following: (i) aggressive energy conservation;
and (ii) use of on-site renewable energy (solar, water, wind,
or earth, etc.). Total NZE buildings are not easily achieved.
The aim of this Competition will be the demonstration
through energy modeling of the offset of at least 90%
total anticipated energy use of the building and its site.
Please refer to the International Living Future Institute for
further explanations on Net-Zero Energy.
•
Likewise, ‘Water-Optimizing’ is not easily understood. For
this competition, Water-Optimizing design shall mean:
(i) aggressive water conservation; (ii) limited use of
municipal potable water sources; (iii) use of on-site water
collection and treatment (ground, natural water source,
or precipitation, etc.); and (iv) use of water for energy
conservation purposes. Typical water use for the average
Canadian is approximately 400L per day. A target of 20L
of potable water use per day can be used as a working
benchmark.
14 | Rules & Regulations | B+H | RBC | Evolve Sustainable Design Competition
Should enhance everyday functions as a research
institute to serve researchers;
Sustainable measures should be legible in its design;
and

6. HOW TO MAKE A SUBMISSION:
Once the Team Leader has completed the Registration
for his/her Team, he/she must send an email or multiple
emails in the manner set out in IMPORTANT NOTES below
(the “Email(s)”) to submit@evolvecompetition.ca during
the Submission Period with all required components of the
Team’s Submission (the “Submission”) to support his/her
Team’s Proposal, as follows:
Team Submission Form (the “Submission Form”):
Completed Submission Form, as received upon, listing all
Eligible Entrants and signed by each Eligible Entrant to
indicate that he/she: (a) is of the age of majority in his/
her province/territory of residence he/she accepts and
agrees to be legally bound by the terms and conditions
of these Rules; or (b) is a Minor and that he/she has the
consent of his/her parent/legal guardian who accepts and
agrees to be legally bound by the terms and conditions
of these Rules on behalf of the Minor. There is a limit
of one (1) Submission per Team and an Eligible Entrant
is not permitted to be a member of more than one (1)
Team. If it is discovered that an Eligible Entrant (or, any
person or entity purporting to be an Eligible Entrant) has
attempted to: (i) obtain more than one (1) Registration or
Submission in this Competition; and/or (ii) use (or attempt
to use) multiple names and/or identities to register for,
or otherwise participate in, the Competition; then (in the
sole and absolute discretion of the Sponsor) he/she may
be disqualified from the Competition. Use (or attempted
use) of multiple names, identities, email addresses and/or
any automated, macro, script, robotic or other system(s)
or program(s) to enter or otherwise participate in or
disrupt this Competition is prohibited and is grounds for
disqualification by the Sponsor. The Releasees (defined
below) are not responsible for late, lost, misdirected,
delayed, incomplete or incompatible Registrations (all
of which are void). All Submission Forms are subject to
verification at any time. The Sponsor reserves the right, in
its sole and absolute discretion, to require proof of identity
and/or eligibility (in a form acceptable to the Sponsor –
including, without limitation, government issued photo
identification) to participate in this Competition. Failure to
provide such proof to the satisfaction of the Sponsor in a
timely manner may result in disqualification.
Design Panel Content (the “Design Panel(s)”):
It is at each Team's discretion how and what material
is to be presented within the given format. The Design
Panels should consider the Evaluation Criteria (defined
below) and determine the most appropriate means of
presenting the Proposal through diagrams, plans, largescale details, axonometric drawings, renderings, notations,
etc. The ideas are to be presented in a clear and concise
manner to effectively illustrate the major themes or
characteristics of the Proposal. Notations such as graphic
scales, north arrows, and labelling should be included as
necessary. The strategy for achieving Net-Zero shall be
clearly demonstrated on the Design Panels themselves.
Teams cannot rely on their Essay (defined below) and/
or Appendices (see below) to demonstrate the technical
achievements of their Proposal. A Team may submit up to
four (4) Design Panels – but, each Design Panel must meet
the following technical requirements: 24”x36” (61 cm x 91.5
cm) Design Panel; 300 DPI (all images to be 300 DPI).
Design Video:
A brief video between one (1) and two (2) minutes
maximum (the “Video”) is encouraged as part of the
Submission describing the most important concepts of
the Proposal. Keep in mind that the Design Panels should
graphically convey the design solution and context as
much as possible, and not rely entirely on a Video to
convey a basic understanding of the project. If a video is
to be included, it should be included in the submission as a
separate file (in the following format: avi).
Supporting Energy Model Results:
Each Team is encouraged to submit supporting
documentation in the form of Energy Modeling output
to demonstrate the Proposal’s achievement of Net-Zero
Energy use. A three-hundred (300) word maximum
executive summary should precede the output
documentation, clearly indicating overall yearly energy
usage and how offsets are achieved. Teams are free to
select any energy modeling software of their choice.
Additional materials may also be included as teams deem
necessary. Be advised, however, that the quantity of
supporting documentation will not impact judging and is
to be provided for back-up purposes only. The Proposal
must be convincing. Any claims deemed questionable may
be crossed checked with supporting documentation at the
Competition Judge’s sole and absolute discretion.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Any Email sent to the Sponsor must NOT exceed 10 MB
in size (otherwise it may be rejected). Content that is

With the exception of the Submission Form, each
individual component of the Submission MUST NOT
contain any markings or other information that will
identify individuals or their affiliates (i.e. Participating
School) in any way. This is required in order to
facilitate fair judging of the Competition. Failure to
comply with this rule will lead to disqualification.
NOTE: By submitting a submission, each eligible entrant
(and his/her parent/legal guardian on his/her behalf
if he/she is a minor) agrees that the submission (and
each individual component thereof) complies with all
conditions stated in these rules. The releasees (defined
below) will bear no legal liability regarding the use of any
submission or a component thereof. The releasees shall
be held harmless by each eligible entrant (and his/her
parent/legal guardian if he/she is a minor) in the event it is
subsequently discovered that he/she has departed from or
not fully complied with any of these rules.
