The Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, called JAIST, is the first
specialized graduate school in Japan with its own independent campus. We were
founded in 1990 to lead the way in developing graduate education in Japan.
In 2010, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of our founding, and we take pride in our
many talented graduates.
The purpose of our Institute is to advance basic research in a variety of disciplines,
through the work of our graduates, not only as researchers in academic environments,
but also through their work as engineers in companies, at the creative edge of research
and development.
JAIST has designed its systematic curriculum to foster the variety of skills necessary for
leaders in technology: a thorough knowledge of a specialized field, with a deep
awareness of its relation to broader issues, the ability to discover and formulate
problems, and then to solve them, and the English language communication skills to
take an active role in our global society.
Also, the well-being of our students is of great importance to us, and we have developed
a system of both work opportunities, such as TA and RA positions, and scholarship
funding, so that students can concentrate fully on their studies. We offer on-campus
housing, to provide a convenient lifestyle, as well as a top-level research environment.
In all these ways, we are opening our doors wide, to welcome young scientists and
engineers ready for new challenges.
Explore your potential at JAIST!

A great, energetic research environment,
and supportive educational system,
allow students to challenge new fields!
An exciting environment, with rich opportunities
for communication and extraordinary freedom
in research.
JAIST lectures are conducted both in English
and Japanese, which is convenient for foreign
students.
The dual degree program here is a great opportunity and
experience for my life... Because of admiring the culture and
language, I personally take an additional Japanese course.
The reason I entered the School of Knowledge Science, was
my belief that I needed to learn the techniques of Information
Science in order to deepen my knowledge of social
psychology, which I studied as an undergraduate. The
educational system here at JAIST is ideal for students who
face a field of study which is different from their
undergraduate major, because the curriculum allows us to
take the exact courses we need in our new field; in my case,
the Basic Programming class was very helpful. Also, at the
afternoon Office Hours, each student is given an assignment
suitable for their proficiency level, to complement the content
learned in class.
Since one of my favorite professors in my university days
recommended JAIST, saying that the study environment is
very good, I decided to come to JAIST. Now that I’m here, I
can see that my professor was right.
Every student has an individual booth, with their own
computer, and the laboratory and library are accessible 24
hours a day, so you can concentrate on your research
without any stress. As far as choosing your research topic,
the advising professors are quite open-minded. Also, in the
School of Knowledge Science, students come from a variety
of backgrounds, both humanities and sciences, so
discussions are always very lively, which inspires me to join
right in actively.
When I was still studying in Japanese school in Tokyo, my
teacher recommended JAIST to me because of its excellent
environment and advanced research equipment. I believe it was
the best choice for me. Especially, in JAIST lectures are
conducted both in English and Japanese, which is convenient
for foreign students who are either good at English or trying to
expand their Japanese professional vocabulary. Besides, every
student here needs to do minor research as well as main
research, and choose lectures from different fields, which gives
students a wide scope of knowledge and different views. In
addition, the career center in JAIST supports student’ s job
hunting, I got my next job in Dai Nippon Printing with the help of
school recommendation.
Hello everybody. My name is Sunatda Arayachukiat, a Thai
student from Bangkok. Six years ago I went with my
grandmother to visit my aunt in Gunma-ken, to the north of
Tokyo. I was very impressed and determined to get back
here again. At present, I am a Ph.D. student attending School
of Materials Science in the dual-degree program with
Chulalongkorn University, under the supervision of Prof.
Yamaguchi Masayuki. The reasons why I joined the dual
degree program here, is that it is a great opportunity and
experience for my life. The international student section at
JAIST is so helpful for foreign students. Moreover, the
educational system is so supportive. The laboratory
instruments are perfect and diverse. The environment and
weather are good for health and help decrease stress.
Now, I’m researching the construction of a web community to
support diabetic patients, to enable them to cope positively
with their condition. It’s difficult for individual patients to cope
with management of their condition, but in the web
community, we see improvement in the psychological state
of patients. I’m working to clarify knowledge creation in this
web community. Also, in a laboratory with students from
many different fields (undergraduate majors), the discussions
are always very enthusiastic, and this, in turn, can lead to
new clues about how to proceed with one’s research. There
are many foreign students who are quite active in expressing
their opinions, and I also want to maintain my attitude of high
motivation.
Now I’ m conducting research on sense expression. In
conversation, it’ s difficult to express feelings and sensory
impressions. Therefore, as methods of expressing feelings
visually, I’ m trying various techniques, for example, by
selecting an “image word” for a feeling while painting, the
color scheme of the painting will change, and the most
appropriate font can be selected quickly for text information.
By proposing these methods, I hope to discover some simple
ways to express “sensitivity” .
Also, I’m a member of the basketball club, and twice a week
we get together with a local team to practice, and on
weekends we take part in games. Every day, I’ m absorbed in
my classes and research, but sports and my hobbies are a
change of pace, so my daily life is varied and interesting.
Currently, I’ m researching about improvement on Elliptic Curve
scalar multiplication. Scalar multiplication is the most important
and time consuming in Elliptic Curve Cryptography, which has
attracted much attention because of its short key size in
comparison to other public key Cryptosystems. What I’ m
focusing on is to improve the addition formulae on Elliptic Curve,
and try to make algorithms aiming at fast scalar multiplication .
In our Laboratory, we not only do research, but are also involved
in the operation of the Lab, such as the management of general
affairs, web, book and so on, and even have the chance to help
in the organization of some conferences. During research and
while doing these work projects, sometimes I go to see cherry
blossoms, fireworks, or join some party, go on picnics, and go
hiking together with my friends. This year’s fireworks was really
awesome, which was a wonderful experience for me, and I really
appreciate it.
In my laboratory there are many foreign students, so I am
using English to communicate. However, because of
admiring the culture and language, I personally take an
additional Japanese course. My current research is about
self-healing materials. My colleagues are so friendly, and this
helpful atmosphere makes the place easy to blend in, and
speeds up the research work. The Japanese people are very
kind, lovely and very polite. Last but not least, I am very
happy and enjoy my life here, at JAIST.

Support for students’ financial independence and well-being
Grants
JAIST provides a variety of scholarship support systems for students in both Master’ s and
Doctoral programs. At the Master’s level, 85-90 students received support during the 2011
academic year. Also, eight students in the SD, 5D, and 3D doctoral programs were
awarded grants by JAIST. Benefit amounts vary from 25,000 yen per month, up to 150,000
yen per month. Please check with the “International Student Section”, as well as e-mail and
website information, for more details.
Work Opportunities
Positions as Laboratory Assistants, Teaching Assistants, and Research Assistants
are sometimes available, so please check with your professor. (Eligibility to apply: For LA
positions, M1 and M2. For TA positions, M2 or Doctoral student. For RA positions, Doctoral
students only.)
The Graduate Research Program also provides funding to a number of doctoral students
in JAIST. Approximately 27 students received this type of funding for research in 2011.
(The monthly benefit amount ranges from 75,000 yen to 150,000 yen.)
Reduction in Fees
In cases where students encounter financial difficulties, JAIST is sometimes able to waive or
reduce entrance fees and tuition payments. Also, M alpha program students are only
required to pay for 2 years of tuition, even if they must extend their programs to a third year.
International Students
MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship holders will receive information from the
International Student Section at the mini-orientation.
For privately financed international students, there are several types of scholarships.
Students can apply for some individually, or they can apply through the university, with or
without a recommendation. Information on scholarships is generally announced via E-mail.
Check the applicant eligibility conditions for scholarships when you decide to apply.
NOTE: Some scholarships require students to appear and sign the Attendance Sheet for
each scholarship at the International Student Section by the designated date every month.
If you are not able to sign because of travel or any other reasons, you will not be entitled to
receive the scholarship that month. Please consider this and plan your travel carefully when
you leave Japan temporarily. For more information, contact the International Student Section.
Many Types of Financial Support are Available
Long-term Research Travel Support
Funds are also often available to support students who plan to study abroad, and/or take part in internships
abroad. In 2011, four doctoral students received funding to travel abroad for their research; they went to
England, France, Germany, and Italy.
Support for Conference Participation
Also, to support students’ advanced research and help develop their careers, funding is available to attend
conferences to present new data to the scientific community. In 2011, JAIST students attended conferences
in Asia, Europe, and the Americas, thanks to over 3 million yen in funds specifically for this purpose.
Support for Career Development Activities
Support is also provided for students’ career-related activities, such as test fees, and transportation
expenses to attend company recruiting events in Tokyo and Osaka.

Let’s apply for JSPS Research Fellowships for Young Scientists!
These fellowships are called DC1 and DC2 for doctoral students, and PD for post-doc students.
The ‘Research Fellowships for Young Scientists’ are offered by the Japan Society for the Promotion of
Science (JSPS). You can apply for these fellowships while you are in school.
What are Research Fellowships for Young Scientists?
Research Fellowships for Young Scientists are scholarships for persons chosen as outstanding young
researchers. The persons awarded these fellowships are free to use their imagination and independently
choose research topics they would like to work on. The fellowships are given to enable them to concentrate
on their research in the early period of their career as a researcher.
Persons chosen for the fellowships should be students in a doctoral course or people who have finished their
doctoral course. They should have excellent research abilities, and should be planning a career in research
at a university or research organization.
I nterview
[JSPS Fellowship Application Interview]
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Research Fellowships for Young Scientists
Recipient of the DC2 Fellowship
According to a survey of recipients of Research Fellowships for Young Scientists, research achievements are considered
important in selection. When I was going to advance to the doctoral course, I decided to try to get a Research Fellowship for
Young Scientists. So I worked hard and devoted myself to my research, publishing three articles in international professional
journals. Of course, in my application, I tried to get the judges for the fellowship to understand the volue of my research by
making my appeal clear and simple. For the interview I used a poster introducing my research, and I gave a four minute
presentation. I studied how to make posters and how to give an accurate presentation, and then I practiced and practiced.
My professors gave me sympathetic advice, and I am really grateful to them. By receiving a Research Fellowship for Young
Scientists, I did not have to rely on my parents for financial help, and I believe I increased my seriousness, and the strength
of my desire to do research.

your local city office.
In addition, for the national pension plan, by using the ‘System for postponement of
student premium payments’, you can postpone payment of your national pension
premiums until you start full-time work after finishing your studies.
Note: This pension plan includes some benefits such as disability coverage, so
don't forget to sign up.
Who is a non-working dependent?
According to the law, a non-working dependent is ‘a person whose living expenses
are mainly supported by someone who is an insured worker’ or ‘a person who lives
with an insured worker and whose living expenses are supported by that worker.’
In simpler terms, you must be ‘a person whose name is listed on your parents’
insurance card.’ In such a case, it will be convenient for you to obtain a ‘Remote
location card for health insurance’.
