Emanuel General Election Debate
A very intense election campaign was fought around the school last week. Extensive poster, website
and video campaigns culminated in a very impressive “Question Time” event in the library after
school on Thursday 7th May. All the party candidates acquitted themselves very well in the face of
some excellent questions, especially from Year 7. I was particularly impressed by the way in which
Luke (UKIP) took our convenor Mr Berlie to task for failing to cover the key issue of the European
Union. I suspect that an EU referendum might be coming up next. Many congratulations to George,
Rhys, Dylan, Noah and Luke for all their hard work. AFK

Strange Ice!
Is 100C the boiling point of water? – this is not always true
because the boiling point depends on the atmospheric
pressure: on high mountains water boils at below 70 C so
an egg will not cook. We all know ice floats, but Prof Sella
showed that other frozen substances sink in their own melts.
We were shown how the crystal structure of ice is unusual as
it contains large spaces. Unlike crystals of other substances
which break to produce smaller crystals of the same shape,
ice will not because the molecules do not bond in the same
way each time. This means that there are more than 15 types
of ice! Two boys stood beneath two sieves, one with crushed
ice and the other with crushed dry ice (solid carbon dioxide):
Edward Hill got wet but Noah stayed dry because the solid dry
ice sublimed straight to gas. Prof. Sella then put some dry ice
into an old coke bottle, (designed to cope with the pressure of
dissolved carbon dioxide gas), along with some water and put
it into a metal bin: BOOM – the bottle gave way and the bin will
never be the same again! He repeated the experiment using
a special glass pressure tube: as the contents warmed the dry
ice melted into liquid carbon dioxide (because of increased
pressure) which is impossible at normal atmospheric pressure.
Unlike cheese that stays as pieces when cut with a wire, ice will
quickly rejoin. The spacial structure of ice is unpredictable and
above a certain temperature some of it becomes disorganised
allowing skates to work smoothly between the temperatures of
-7 to -30C. Remember those spaces within the crystal structure
of ice? Sometimes those spaces are filled with a flammable
liquid which will catch alight as companies drill through the
ice. As there is so much ice in the world its characteristics are
very important with much research taking place. We were
shown images of the drastic decrease in areas of the Arctic ice
cap which will lead to consequences as yet not fully known:
certainly the stabilising of environmental temperatures will be
disrupted. Prof Sella told us of the thousands of jobs which are
being created in Green technology. The demonstration was
not only informative but also entertaining. All of us will now
view ice in a totally new way. BAR
Final Sixth Form BBQ of the year
On Friday Phyllis and her crew treated the 6th form to a wonderful final BBQ of the academic year. On the last day of normal
school when both the present upper sixth and lower sixth are in school together, we were all able to celebrate together in spite
of a little rain. The swanky hot dogs with all the trimmings and ice cream sundaes put a smile on everyone’s face. I would like to
thank Phyllis for the lovely party food. I would also like to thank this year’s upper and lower sixth for the great atmosphere and
mutual support that has existed in the sixth form centre this year. KEB

Virtually the whole of Year 9 enjoyed very good weather over
the weekend of 9-10th May on their overnight expeditions
to the Surrey Hills. We used three different campsites with
eighteen different teams, and the advantages of team work,
preparation, determination and careful navigation were
very apparent. Everyone improved their skills enormously,
and could see how to do even better (especially the group
which managed to “walk off the map”)! Let us hope for
equally good weather on the Bronze Assessed Expedition
on the 13-14th June. Well done! AFK
Caribbean Lunch
On Thursday the catering staff put on a Caribbean Lunch.
We served a super array of authentic Caribbean dishes to
tempt the palate. I asked Curtis, our newest recruit to our
chef’s team if he would like to come up with a menu and
the dishes he selected to cook for us were delicious. We
had many compliments from pupils and staff, both verbally
and via 2EatEmanuel on Instagram. The menu included Rio
Ochos Red Pea Soup followed by Jamaican Jerk Chicken or
Jerk Halloumi & Pepper Skewers which were served with the
traditional Rice and Peas, Spicy Sweet Potatoes, Plantains and
Caribbean Coleslaw. For dessert Curtis cooked Gizzada, which
is a sweet Jamaican coconut flan and we added a touch of
the Caribbean to the fruit salad with star fruit, mango, papaya
and pineapple. We decorated the refectory and buttery in the
sunny, cheerful colours of the Caribbean and the whole day
was a great success. PS

Blitz Chess Results
We recently completed the second and final Blitz Chess competition of
the school year. As entries were slightly down on usual we played this
event as a mini-league with all players having six break-time fixtures. The
final round of games saw Ed defeat Luke. Both had great competitions,
but as Luke is in Year 7 he is a great prospect for next season. Edward
defeated Elliot in the battle for third and fourth. Both boys played some
very good chess. Ed will continue to captain Emanuel Chess for another
season in the autumn when we once again compete in the Briant Poulter
Surrey Chess League Rapid Play Division Two. TRJ

Y10 girls win at Bourne Regatta
After missing out first place in a close final last week at Chiswick Regatta,
the girls rowed strongly to victory in the WJ15 4x+ of Bonny, Bridie,
Rosamond, Becky, Alicia (cox). Three doubles raced, Emma, Helena,
Thea, Emily, Juju, Lucy, they competed in the women’s novice category
and were up against very strong crews who were in years 11 and 12. WSL

Rowing continued
Another first for girl J16 rowers
At Bourne Regatta on Saturday the Girls J16 eight recorded a notable first. In winning the IM3 eights event they are
the first ever Emanuel girls crew to win an eights event at this level, where it is a case of the girls taking on women.
In a straight final they held off two adult club crews, Putney Town RC and Parrs RC, to win by 2 lengths over the 1000m course.
The girls had a good start in blustery conditions and, as the first photo shows with the Emanuel crew on the near side, they
quickly took the lead. Maya rate enabled the crew to settle into a solid rhythm and Claudia steered a tight line round the bend
from Chiswick Bridge to Kew. From mid-way, as the second photo shows, the result was never in doubt. The crew was b Daisy,
2 Issy, 3 Katherine, 4 Natasha, 5 Mariella, 6 Issy, 7 Jessie, s Maya, cox Claudia. This crew will be racing the WJ16 8+ event
on the Saturday at National Schools, while Darcy will be racing the J17 single sculls. In preparation for this Darcy competed
in the Women’s IM3 1x at Borne, like the eight she was taking on the women. She won her first round heat against a woman
from Poplar RC by a clear length, and then came up against a very strong woman from Mortlake Anglian RC in the semi-final.
Although she got taken off the start Darcy attacked all the way down the course and held on to lose by just a length. On the
Sunday at National Schools Darcy will rejoin the coxed four, already winners of the Schools’ Head this season, in a bid to go even
better than their 4th place last year and bring home a medal. We wish luck to all the senior girls competing in Nottingham.
J16 and Senior Boys Rowing
Last Saturday two eights from the J16 and Senior Boys squad
enjoyed some exciting racing at Borne@Chiswick Regatta
and Bedford Regatta. Both crews were involved in neck
and neck battles down their respective courses, and both
crews unfortunately ended up losing out by the narrowest
of margins! Peter, Tom, Alex, Patrick, Fergus, Ezio, Jack,
Charlie, Matthew made up the Chiswick boat and were
drawn against Canford School from Dorset in the first round.
A real battle ensued with the lead changing several times
down the course. Canford just managed to get their noses
in front by the finish line however and eventually went on
to win the competition overall. (Result - Canford School beat
Emanuel School by a canvas). Meanwhile at Bedford Regatta
with opposition dropping like flies at the last minute, despite
10 crews still left in the draw our J16 boys eight of Tom, Casey,
Joel, Ben, Flynn, Owen, Roshaan, Daniel, Zein ended up
with a bye through 2 rounds to the semi-final, where they met
Bedford School’s J16 crew. With a good start by both crews,
Emanuel had the advantage of the early stagger to lead by a
few feet, which they maintained through most of the 1200m
race. However Bedford on their home course took advantage
of the final bend to sneak through by a canvas on the line,
much to the delight of the partisan crowd in the enclosure!
[Result - Bedford School beat Emanuel School by a canvas].
Gutting results for both Emanuel crews but great racing – well
done! DMC

Cricket
U13A v John Fisher (lost by 6 runs)
This was a disappointing first defeat of the season for the team after a very strong start to the game. Having been asked to
bowl first, Ben and Ben each took 3 wickets to help reduce the opposition to 74 all out. Ben bowled his left arm spin with
great control and the wicket of their danger man (the opening bat and captain) was an important moment in the game.
However, an ill disciplined batting display saw only Oscar (16) and Ben (10) get into double figures. Wickets tumbled too often
through poor shot selection and despite the final pair of James and Ollie nearly stealing an unlikely victory, we fell 6 runs
short of our total. TG
U13A vs Wallington (lost by 10 runs)
Having suffered a frustrating defeat on
Saturday, the team were keen to make
amends and put in a good performance
at Home. Having been invited to bowl
first, Ben took the important wicket
of the talented open batsman with
a brilliant out swinging delivery that
clipped the top of off-stump. Ben
again showed great control with his
left arm spin in the middle overs while
Ben kept it tight from the other end.
However, some ill-discipline in the
field allowed their big hitting number
four to pile on the runs before he was
removed by Jake in the dying overs.
Ben then picked up two more wickets
to finish up with 3-17 as Wallington
compiled a very good total of 117. This
was a mediocre fielding display from
the team which was disappointing.
Jake and Ben got off to a good start in
reply before Jake was dismissed for 11.
Unfortunately, Ben then followed the
very next ball leaving us a mountain
to climb. However, an outstanding
partnership between Ben and Oscar
saw us push on to needing 30 off the
final 4 overs. Oscar then fell for a wellmade 22 and Emerson followed for a
brilliant 43. Not even the big hitting
of Tom could get us over the line and
we fell 10 runs short. A good batting
display was let down by our efforts in
the field and lessons need to be learnt
if we are to return to winning ways
next week. TG
U12A v John Fisher School
The U12A XI bounced back from their first defeat of the season by Wallingford Grammar School with a comprehensive victory
against John Fisher School. After winning the toss Emanuel elected to bat and posted a score of 115-4 from their 20 overs. Billy
top scored with an impressive 48 not out, with some powerful leg side shots and well-judged running between the wickets. He
was supported by Luke (11) at the top of the order and Fred (23) in the middle part of the innings. In reply John Fisher were
unable to gain momentum in their innings, due to accurate bowling and tight fielding. John Fisher finished their innings on 486, 67 runs short of the Emanuel total. The pick of the bowlers was Jude who finished with figures of 4 overs, 1 maiden, 4 runs for
1 wicket. Overall an excellent performance. WTH
U15 v Wallington Grammar School
Both Under 15B team matches have been
very close affairs, coming down to the
final over of play to decide the winner.
Against Wallington Grammar School
Emanuel elected to bat first. In our 20
over innings, Aviral and Tom set the
tone with 50 and 31 runs, respectively.
Emanuel’s total after 20 overs was 140.
Emanuel then showed excellent work
U14 v Dulwich
with their bowling, Tom, Tom, Max and
Milo all claiming wickets. However, a few
mistakes with our fielding proved costly,
allowing Wallington to reach 141 with
5 balls remaining. Against John Fisher
it was a reversal of our previous game.
Our fielding was tremendous, keeping
Fisher to 122 runs. Tom claimed no less
than 3 wickets for just 8 runs. Theo, Max
nd Keaton also took a wicket each. Our
batting was unable to live up to that of
our previous game. Despite a mini come
back from captain, Sholto (21 runs)
Emanuel were all out for 104. DJT
Monday saw Emanuel School’s U14A take on Dulwich in a short T20 match played at home on a beautiful early summer afternoon,
the sun out in full. Having already won more tosses this year than last, skipper Sinan chose to bat on what seemed like a decent
wicket. After crashing the first two deliveries of the match for four, he settled in to play a magnificent innings of 71 from 58
balls, both rotating the strike and pouncing on wayward bowling with leopard-like predation. Despite a few nervous overs,
Joe (26) provided able support and the team ended on 133-5, a decent although certainly not insurmountable total. Dulwich
started their reply in a positive fashion, plundering runs and exposing some criminally relaxed fielding as Emanuel were caught
napping. After six overs, they were cruising at 51-0, well above the required run rate and things started to look grim. Off-spinner
Sacha (1-16) was then brought on and bowled his best spell of the season thus far, probing a dangerous line and varying his
pace wonderfully. His figures may not quite reflect the impact his four overs had as the in-form batsmen just could not get
him away, his first two overs going for just three runs. His pressure resulted in a run-out and wicket of the opposition’s 1 and 3
batsmen and after George removed the danger man, the game was done, despite all seeming lost at one point. All that was
left was for George to clean up, finishing with superb figures of 4-18, including a double-wicket-maiden. Though there are still
things to work on, particularly in the field, this young team is coming on in leaps and bounds, batting with positivity and for the
first time, taking all ten wickets. Well done on a thrilling win against a strong side. HGF

U13B v. St. Dunstan’s Won by 10 wickets
U13B v. John Fisher Won by 5 wickets
We played two matches last week
and had two impressive wins. Despite
bowling well against St. Dunstan’s, there
were far too many inaccuracies and
they ended up posting a challenging
76 to win. George took 3 wickets with
Jack and Siddiq supporting well. The
openers made light work of the chase,
with Seymour and Sam batting sensibly
to secure the win, without losing any
wickets and within 10 overs.
John Fisher were a more challenging
side. Despite taking some early wickets
thanks to Sam and Finn, they managed
to post an intimidating 103 runs for the
loss of only 6 wickets. The bowling was
penetrating at times, but still lacked
the accuracy needed to keep the run
rate down. Special mention must go to
new man Edward for keeping the run
rate down and securing a key wicket.
The run chase began terribly with both
openers out within 2 overs. Alfie (22)
helped to steady the ship with Oscar,
but both soon fell to good deliveries. It
was Nathaniel and Jasper who helped
to secure the victory, with a lesson in
how to bat. They both began tentatively
at first, as they became accustomed to
the bowling, but the runs began to flow
and they helped to secure the win with
5 overs remaining.

Wandsworth Borough meet Years 9 and10
This was a successful meet for the Athletics team who managed to win a total of 18 medals amongst a strong field of athletes.
In wet and windy conditions the boys and girls acquitted themselves well and put in some strong performances. Notably, Max
and Sam achieved 1st and 2nd place respectively in the Intermediate boys 400m. Catherine jumped a fantastic distance of 8m
21cm to win the junior girls Triple Jump while Katherine came 2nd. Jake ran the 800m in 2:19 to finish 2nd in the Intermediate
category and Amelia came 1st and 2nd in the high jump and 300m respectively.
FUWS Foundation event
Emanuel’s turn had come to host this event again after 5 years and the team were keen to put on a good show. The boys
performed fantastically well to finish 1st in both the Junior and Intermediate Category to win the overall prize while the girls
finished 2nd in each. A special congratulations must go to India (Junior Girls) and Catherine (Intermediate Girls) who were the
highest scoring competitors in their respective categories. Max should also receive a special mention for breaking the 300m
record in a time of 40.49s. Here is the full list of winners:

Hockey
As the standard of Emanuel hockey continues to improve we have been encouraged by the number of Year 6-9 students
that attended this year’s London Youth Games trials. There were over 90 girls from the borough competing for a place in a
squad and as the weeks of training have progressed the numbers have been cut. This is a ruthless process and the girls have
to be determined to work at their best each session to prove what they have to make the Wandsworth Squad. I am pleased
to announce that Emma in Year 7 has gained a place in the final 20 and we have our fingers crossed that she will be in the
squad of 12 that will represent Wandsworth at the LYG. LJF
Rounders
13A v St Dunstan’s
It was a very close win to St Dunstan’s,
winning by just one rounder due to
their excellent batting in the second
half. We were three rounders up in the
first half but our fielding slipped down
in the second. Emily, Sophie and Izzie
were our star batters hitting the balls
way past the opposing fielders. Anna
bowled some outstanding balls, as well
as some excellent catches. Maddie
was on second post and successfully
managed to catch out many of the
opposing team. Tove was positioned
on fourth base, and due to her brilliant
catching, prevented many scoring
rounders. Mia played out at second
deep, backing and working well with
second, throwing some accurate passes
to fourth base. Rosie had an effective
batting strategy that surprised their
fielders greatly. The final score was 10 ½
to St Dunstan’s and 9 ½ to Emanuel. I am
exceptionally proud of the team despite
our unfortunate loss as everyone played
their best and everyone had positive
attitudes throughout. By Maisie
U13B v St Dunstan’s
This was our second match of the season and we were hoping to improve from our first game. In the first half we weren’t
making quick decisions when batting and deciding which post to go to and I think this cost us a few rounders as good
batters were getting out. However, as the game progressed we noticed the other team’s weaknesses and played to our
strengths. For example we realised that the other team could predict where the ball was going to land so we made sure we
hit the balls in different directions.
Despite our best efforts we weren’t able to pull ahead and the end result was a draw of 9 1/2 rounders each. The star player
was Kitty as she consistently caught and threw the ball extremely well, reacting quickly when deciding which post to throw
the ball to. Reliably strong batters included Hannah and Eliza who hit extremely far and scored a number of rounders
between them. By Emilia
U13C v St Dunstan’s
We won the toss and chose to field first. During the first part of the game we did not play our best and St Dunstan's scored
several rounders. We soon started to improve by catching their players out. By the time we reached half time, St. Dunstan's had
scored 9 1/2 rounders and we had 5 1/2 rounders. In the second half of the match, we improved particularly with our fielding.
Juliet who was positioned at 2nd base did a brilliant job stumping our opponents out, whilst Daisy and Capucine bowled very
well. Zara and Tiphanie were great at batting. I am very pleased to say that everyone in the team played very well, but sadly
we did lose our match with the overall score of 19 1/2 to them, and 12 1/2 to us. Next time I think we can improve our game by
concentrating on the ball more when fielding and perhaps with better catching. Despite the score it was a very enjoyable game.
