Welcome to the University
of California, Merced
“It takes a community to educate a Bobcat”
As the tenth campus of the University of California, our mission is
to achieve excellence in teaching, research and public service.
The staff and units within the Division
of Student Affairs work to support our
undergraduate and graduate students
to excel and to achieve in and outside
of the classroom and laboratory.
One of the strengths of UC Merced is its
diverse and talented student body. The
Division of Student Affairs is committed
to maintaining a campus community
that celebrates diversity, academic
achievement and civic engagement.
We also are committed to providing
services and support that allow our
students to realize their intellectual,
physical, social and emotional potential.
In addition to working with students,
many of the units within Student
Affairs work closely with our students’
parents and family members. We like
to say that parents and families are
our partners in student success. More
information for parents and families
is available on the Parent-Family

Resource website. UC Merced is a very
special place: the academic quality of
the University of California combined
with the personal attention and
support of a fine liberal arts college.

About UC Merced
The 10th campus in the prestigious University of California
system, UC Merced is diverse, growing and committed
to those ideals that serve the state, nation and world
through research, education and public service.
The University
UC Merced is the first new American
research university in the 21st century,
with a mission of research, teaching and
service. The campus opened September
5, 2005, in the Central Valley of California.
The university is about an hour north of
Fresno, two hours south of Sacramento,
two hours southeast of San Francisco
and the Silicon Valley, and 90 minutes
west of Yosemite National Park.
Our Students
As of fall 2011, UC Merced has nearly
5,200 undergraduate and graduate
students. These students are some
of the brightest in the state, and
possess an entrepreneurial spirit and
thirst for knowledge. Since 2005, our
8
students have formed more than 100
clubs and organizations, written their
own constitution and have created a
thriving governing body. In addition,
our graduate and undergraduate
students are conducting some of
the most cutting-edge research of
our time, such as stem cells, artificial
intelligence and renewable energy.
A Focus on Research
Consistent with our sister campuses such
as UCLA and UC Berkeley, academic
research is a critical part of UC Merced’s
mission. The process of discovery
provides our students with a deeper
understanding of the world and its cultural,
social, natural and engineered systems.
University of California, Merced

FERPA provides parents with
certain rights with respect to
children’s education records up
until entry to the university. When
a student enters the university,
the rights parents previously held
transfer exclusively to the student.
The university considers students
as adults, regardless of age or
financial dependence. Ordinarily,
parents of UC Merced students
obtain information about their
students’ records directly from
their students. The payment of
a student’s tuition by the parent
does not, by itself, give the parent
the right of access to a student’s
education record. Questions
regarding these procedures may
be directed to the Office of the
Registrar. Additional information
on FERPA and parents made
available by College Parents of
America can be found at www.

Where to Start:
•
Parents need to initiate meaningful
conversations with their high
school or college student about
their career aspirations.
The Office of Student Life
The Office of Student Life (OSL) is here
to encourage involvement in campus
life, support student initiatives, and
serve as a primary liaison to students.
Through the coordination of activities,
events, workshops, lectures, and trips,
the Office of Student Life works to create
an out of the classroom experience
that develops the whole student.
The Office of Student Life has nine
programmatic areas of focus to provide
education and support for the student cocurricular experience. Those focus areas
are Leadership Programs, Social Justice
Programs, Civic Engagement, Clubs and
Organizations, Student Government,
Activities and Events, Judicial Affairs, and
our two newest areas of development,
Sorority and Fraternity Life, and Women’s
Programs. With over 100 registered
student clubs and organizations active
at UC Merced , students have an endless
array of opportunities for involvement.
Encourage your student to browse
the OSL web site and get familiar
with the many resources available.
