Hillary Clinton Suspends Roll Call Vote
BRIAN WILLIAMS, anchor (Denver):
This is happening now, live on the convention floor. Senator Clinton is about to throw open the
nomination to Barack Obama.
Senator HILLARY CLINTON (D – New York): Madam Secretary, on behalf of the great state of New
York, with appreciation for the spirit and dedication of all who are gathered here, with eyes firmly fixed
on the future, in the spirit of unity, with the goal of victory, with faith in our party and our country, let's
declare together in one voice right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate, and he will be our
president!
Sen. CLINTON: Madam Secretary--Madam Secretary, I move that the convention suspend the procedural
rules and suspend the further conduct of the roll call vote. All votes cast by the delegates will be counted,
and that I move Senator Barack Obama of Illinois be selected by this convention by acclimation as the
nominee of the Democratic Party for president of the United States.
Group of People: (In unison) Hillary! Hillary! Hillary! Hillary! Hillary!
Hillary! Hillary! Hillary! Hillary! Hillary!
WILLIAMS: So moved by Senator Hillary Clinton. Chuck Todd, our political director, watching all of
this with us.
Chuck, the meaning, the gravity of this kind of moment at this convention.
Mr. CHUCK TODD (NBC News Political Director): It's a--look, this is almost as powerful as the speech
last night. With Hillary Clinton doing this, it sort of wipes away some of the wounds that were there for
some of these delegates who really hadn't been ready to give up the dream of seeing Hillary Clinton
nominated. Having her do this, you could see the enthusiasm in the room. You could feel it.
WILLIAMS: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi:
Representative NANCY PELOSI (D – California): All in favor of the motion to suspend the rules and

nominate by acclimation Barack Obama as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, please say aye.
Crowd of People: (In unison) Aye.
Rep. PELOSI: All those opposed, please say no. Two-thirds of the delegates having voted in the
affirmative, the motion is adopted.
