The Department of zoology seeks to make its contribution by hosting a National Conference. The conference is committed to provide a forum for scientists, researchers and students from the biological sciences to explore areas of science and research, that will help us to meet and expand our commitment in solving real-life conservation challenges for a better tomorrow. Leading researchers from the scientific communities will discuss and work together to create directions for future research, providing a ground work for developing novel approaches in zoology for the betterment of mother earth. ABOUT THE COLLEGE ABOUT CHENNAI Queen Mary's College was started in the year 1914. It was then known as the Madras Women's College. QMC has the distinction of being the first Government College for women in South India. The College offers 23 undergraduate, 18 postgraduate, 12 M.Phil and 10 Ph.D programmes. Located on the scenic marina, the college has a beautiful view of the sea. Its sprawling campus of 17.4 acres is virtually a green paradise. A conference in this setting is sure to be a unique experience. Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu is the fourth largest metropolis in India popularly regarded as the "Gateway to the South". Chennai has a pleasant weather in the month of January, with temperature in the range of 22-27ºC and probably the best time to visit. Important places to visit in Chennai are Marina Beach, Santhome Basilica, Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore, Guindy National Park, Arignar Anna Zoological park, Fort St. George, Government Museum Complex with its 18th century buildings, Periyar Science and Technology, which will be of interest to students and other science scholars. The city has several Government and private emporia which sell handicrafts, leather goods, Kancheepuram silk and hand-woven fabrics. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY The Department was instituted in the year 1957 with an undergraduate degree course. It was upgraded as a PG department in the academic year 1993-94. The Department offers UG, PG, M.Phil. and Ph.D programmes. The Department has 10 vibrant faculty members. The faculty have undertaken several research projects funded by UGC and TNSCST. The department has registered a steady growth, right from its inception, strictly adhering to the goals of the Department - quality teaching, motivation, research and personality development, to produce learned women who will transform the society. ABOUT ZOOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA The Zoological Survey of India, the only taxonomic organisation in the country involved in the study of all kinds of animals from Protozoa to Mammalia, occurring in all possible habitats from deepest depth of the st oceans to the peaks of Himalayas, was established on 1 July 1916 to promote survey, exploration and research leading to the advancement in our knowledge of the various aspects of the exceptionally rich animal life. During recent years, the scope and functions of Zoological Survey of India have been considerably expanded, particularly in the light of the Convention on Biological Diversity, ratified by Government of India in 1994 with special reference to Articles 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 17,18 and 41 of the Convention. Zoological Survey of India has sixteen regional centres, other than the headquarters in Kolkata, located in different places covering the different ecosystems namely deserts, high altitudes, plains, estuaries, fresh water, forests and the seas.
