Officer Downs Visits SLE Kindergarteners
Kings School Resource Officer John Downs visited the kindergarten classes at
South Lebanon Elementary on October 30th. He spoke to the students about
being a policeman, what he does at Kings, and Halloween safety. Officer Downs
said, “It is always great to get the opportunity to speak to younger students.
Many of them have negative opinions about law enforcement officers which are
passed down by parents. It gives me a chance to show them we are friendly and
they can come to us if they have a problem.”
KJH Paying it Forward
On Monday, November 3rd, Kings Junior High’s Team 7 White divided
into small groups and set out into the community to "Pay It Forward."
Groups went to four different locations: YMCA Camp Kern, The King's
Mansion (Deerfield Parks), Otterbein Retirement Home, and Miller Ecological Park.
At YMCA Camp Kern, students assisted in winterizing some of the cabins,
lined and graveled trails, and helped with general camp tasks. At The King's Mansion, students helped to mulch a large section of trail. At Otterbein, students worked with the senior citizens to make cards for Veteran's Day. At Miller Ecological Park, students assembled
bird houses and assisted with trail maintenance.
Andrea Kaercher, Team 7 Science Teacher said, “We feel like this is a great opportunity for
students to give back to the community that does so much for them.”
Reading with Dogs!
Jaime Stewart and her therapy dog, Maggie have been visiting with students at J.F. Burns Elementary. Maggie is a rescue dog that Mrs. Stewart adopted from GRRAND Rescue last November. This past June, Maggie was certified as a therapy dog through Pet Partners. On her first visit, Mrs. Stewart visited and shared the book Love Comes on a Leash
by Jody Otwell. She also talked to the students about therapy dogs.
The following week she brought Maggie to school and some students
had the opportunity to read to Maggie. Maggie is very friendly and
loved listening to the books while being petted. Mrs. Stewart plans to
come back on a regular basis and will have Maggie take turns visiting
different groups. The children really enjoyed reading to her!

Wallaby Visit at SLE
The second grade classes at South Lebanon Elementary
brought in the most money as a group for the SLE Walk-a–thon
this year so they won a special visit from Bob Heyob of Horsefeathers Farm. Bob brought his beloved Albino Wallaby named
Summer Snow. Bob has been raising wallaby’s for many years
on his farm. He gave the students a lesson about wallaby habits
and what it’s like to have a wallaby as a pet. Summer Snow
hopped around the room stopping in front of the students waiting for them to pet her. The student’s loved learning about
Summer Snow and having the opportunity to be up close and
personal with a wallaby!

CIS Teachers Meet “The Book Whisperer”
On Wednesday, November 5, a group of Columbia Intermediate School
teachers attended a presentation at Mason Middle School, which was
open to the public, by Donalyn Miller, author of The Book Whisperer and
Reading in the Wild. Miller was recently named as Manager of Independent Reading and Outreach for Scholastic Book Fairs. C.I.S. teachers were
inspired by her message that students need time to read, access to a wide
variety of books, and the freedom to choose what they read.

Next Thursday, November 13, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Emily Swanson is being recognized
for her selection as the Drum Major of the 2015 US Army All American Marching Band. Members from the US Army and representatives from the band will be on campus to present a
"Selection Tour Event" in the KHS auditorium.
Only 125 students in the entire nation are chosen for participation after a rigorous audition process. Students receive an all-expenses-paid week-long trip to San Antonio, Texas to rehearse
and perform with the finest young musicians in the country. Emily’s honor is particularly special
as she was selected as the Drum Major of the group. The Drum Major is responsible for conducting the band in performance and is the highest student leadership rank within the marching band.
Please join us at the ceremony at KHS on Thursday, November 13, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Congratulations, Emily!
KHS Football Person of Impact
Last week before the last home football
game, each Kings football player chose a
“Person of Impact;” a teacher or district employee who has made an important impact on
the players life. The players gave their jerseys
to their person of impact to either wear or display in some way in their classroom. Many of
those selected were seen wearing their special jerseys around the school buildings on Friday, as well as at
the football game on Friday night. Those selected were also recognized at Friday night’s game.
Kings Teacher Ashley Jordan said she received a letter and jersey from one of her former students. She said,
“I was brought to tears by the letter. I’ve displayed his jersey in my classroom and wrote something about
him, and how his words encouraged me and made me feel honored and appreciated. I am truly blessed to
be a Kings Knight!”
Pictured are some of the Persons of Impact who were able to attend Friday night’s game.

One Knight Only was chosen to participate in a new-style of performance for this

Last spring, deadly twisters hit Oklahoma. For many, there
