He spoke to the students about being a policeman, what he does at Kings, and Halloween safety. Officer Downs said, “It is always great to get the opportunity to speak to younger students. Many of them have negative opinions about law enforcement officers which are passed down by parents. It gives me a chance to show them we are friendly and they can come to us if they have a problem.” KJH Paying it Forward On Monday, November 3rd, Kings Junior High’s Team 7 White divided into small groups and set out into the community to "Pay It Forward." Groups went to four different locations: YMCA Camp Kern, The King's Mansion (Deerfield Parks), Otterbein Retirement Home, and Miller Ecological Park. At YMCA Camp Kern, students assisted in winterizing some of the cabins, lined and graveled trails, and helped with general camp tasks. At The King's Mansion, students helped to mulch a large section of trail. At Otterbein, students worked with the senior citizens to make cards for Veteran's Day. At Miller Ecological Park, students assembled bird houses and assisted with trail maintenance. Andrea Kaercher, Team 7 Science Teacher said, “We feel like this is a great opportunity for students to give back to the community that does so much for them.” Reading with Dogs! Jaime Stewart and her therapy dog, Maggie have been visiting with students at J.F. Burns Elementary. Maggie is a rescue dog that Mrs. Stewart adopted from GRRAND Rescue last November. This past June, Maggie was certified as a therapy dog through Pet Partners. On her first visit, Mrs. Stewart visited and shared the book Love Comes on a Leash by Jody Otwell. She also talked to the students about therapy dogs. The following week she brought Maggie to school and some students had the opportunity to read to Maggie. Maggie is very friendly and loved listening to the books while being petted. Mrs. Stewart plans to come back on a regular basis and will have Maggie take turns visiting different groups. The children really enjoyed reading to her! Many of those selected were seen wearing their special jerseys around the school buildings on Friday, as well as at the football game on Friday night. Those selected were also recognized at Friday night’s game. Kings Teacher Ashley Jordan said she received a letter and jersey from one of her former students. She said, “I was brought to tears by the letter. I’ve displayed his jersey in my classroom and wrote something about him, and how his words encouraged me and made me feel honored and appreciated.
