22 APRIL 16, 2012 • CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
Still building
despite the
downturn
The commercial construction business is supposed to be in the tank
now. So how did Power
Construction Co. LLC engineer a year, in 2011, in
which revenue soared 29
percent, to $663 million?
By betting on the right
sectors. When the economy crashed, Schaumburgbased Power rolled away
from office buildings and
hotels to focus on health
care and education, which
have continued to build
new facilities.
In January, Power finished work on a makeover
of Rush University Medical Center. In June, the
company will complete
Lurie Children’s Hospital.
Each project was billed at
more than $500 million.
Just recently, the firm was
due to finish a 36-story,
$100 million building at
Roosevelt University.
“Health care has been a
primary focus of ours going back to the 1960s. It’s
been good to us over the
years,” says Jeffrey Karp,
Power’s president and
CEO. “Higher education
has weathered the storm
in the economy pretty well
recently, too.”
These markets, however,
can turn quickly. Richard
Tilghman, a senior vicepresident at rival Pepper
Construction Group in
Chicago, worries the new
federal health care legislation could force hospitals
to curtail construction.
“And who knows about
colleges,” Mr. Tilghman
adds. “Several schools are
starting new fundraising
campaigns to finance construction projects, but with
the economy still hurting,
it’s not clear how successful those campaigns will
be.”
Pepper has widened its
reach as far afield as Texas.
But Power is practically
unique in its concentration
on Chicago. “We can control our culture better by
focusing locally,” Mr. Karp
says.

THINKSTOCK
Crain’s estimates are in gray. *Company estimate.
Acquisition
gives fleet
firm a lift
With the recession
squeezing the industry,
very few fleet-management companies made
acquisitions in the past
five years. But Emkay Inc.
bucked the trend.
The Itasca-based company acquired JPL Vehicle Management Services’ commercial fleet
last year in a deal that
made up about half of the
company’s 50.5 percent
increase in revenue in
2011.
“The acquisition was absolutely the biggest contributor to our growth of
revenues last year, but we
positioned our balance
sheet and had a disciplined approach so that
we could enable something like that to occur,”
CEO Greg Tepas says.
JPL of Toronto occupies
the same market space as
Emkay, which allowed
Emkay to diversify geographically without radically retooling its business model.
Even without JPL,
Emkay’s services business
was up 55 percent in 2011
alone. Emkay’s customer
service reputation helped
attract new business, says
Sherb Brown, vice-president of Torrance, Calif.based Bobit Business Media, publisher of trade
publication Automotive
Fleet.
The rising cost of maintaining commercial fleets—
typically vans, SUVs and
lightweight trucks used for
shipping supplies and
making deliveries—is causing many logistics companies and shippers to offload
the task to third parties like
Emkay, Mr. Brown says.
“There is a lot of outsourcing of maintenance management services, which
are not their core business.”

26 APRIL 16, 2012 • CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
Car dealer
sees speed
picking up
Last year ended on a
low note for Schaumburgbased Patrick Dealer
Group, when Saab, one of
its automotive brands,
filed for bankruptcy protection in December.
Selling Saab inventory
will be a challenge, CEO
Hanley Dawson IV says.
But record-setting sales of
Hyundai models helped
offset Saab’s departure.
Patrick’s Hyundai outlet
nearly doubled sales to
1,550 cars in 2011, from
855 in 2010.
Despite the Saab setback and the slow-growing economy, Patrick—a
chain of dealerships with
locations in Naperville
and Schaumburg selling
nameplates ranging from
Cadillac to Land Rover—
increased revenue by 35
percent in 2011, to $285
million.
Not surprising, Patrick
has seen growth in the
services arm of its business in the wake of the recession, as consumers
held off on new car purchases and fixed up their
older cars instead.
“All across the industry, sales numbers were
down in 2008 and especially after 2009,” says
Peter Sander, president
of the Illinois Automotive
Dealership Association in
Springfield. “There’s no
question that dealers
turned to their services
department.”
Many Americans have
postponed buying a new
car until the economy
improves. In 2011, the
average age of a consumer’s car was 10.2
years, the highest on
record. But there are
signs that the pent-up
desire for new cars could
send consumers back to
the dealership this year:
New car sales are expected to increase 5 percent
in 2012, according to
IBISWorld, a market research firm based in Los
Angeles.
“The economy is a little
stronger; (there) seems to
be a little more confidence
in the consumer,” Mr.
Dawson says. “This will be
good year.”

Electronic components maker gets spark from diverse lineup
If a company is going to
keep growing over 90, it
pays to be flexible, as the
executives at Chicagobased Trippe Manufacturing Co. can tell you.
In 1922, in an era when
lights weren’t included on
many new cars, Graham
Trippe (pronounced Trip)
started his company making high-beam headlights.
By the 1950s he had moved
on to providing flashing
lights for emergency vehicles, then by the 1970s the
company had expanded
once again to provide power equipment for ambulances, to run respirators
and the like.
When IBM Corp. made its
first personal computer in
1981, Trippe was there to
provide electronic support
products, such as backup
power and surge protec-
THE BROAD LINEUP—
THE COMPANY OFFERS

KEPT THE COMPANY
ON A GROWTH PATH.
tors. The company began
producing its own software
to manage the power used
by information technology
equipment in the mid1990s and then, as laptops
after 2000 began to replace
many desktop machines,
the company again zigzagged, selling racks and
cabling and connectivity.
The broad lineup—the
company offers some 2,500
products under the Tripp
Lite brand through resellers
such as CDW Corp. in Lincolnshire—has kept the
company on a growth path.
Keelin Wyman, an executive vice-president, arrived
at Trippe in the 1970s and
reports that sales have risen
every year since.
“It helps that we play in a
wide variety of markets,
both in the U.S. and internationally,” Mr. Wyman
says, noting that the company, whose lone foreign market when he arrived was
Canada, today sells to 80
countries. It sources its
products from contract
manufacturers, most based
in Asia. Much of the distribution is from the company’s 10-story, 1 millionsquare-foot warehouse,
which once belonged to the
now-defunct retailer Spiegel
Inc., on the South Side.
The company, with annual
sales of about $300 million,
has no plans to go public. It
might be a candidate for acquisition by a bigger competitor such as Eaton Corp.
of Cleveland, though Mr.
Wyman says management,
which is led by CEO Glen
Haeflinger, 44, has no interest in selling out at the moment. “There has been some
consolidation in this indus-
try recently, and
there is likely to be
more to come,” says
Philip Franklin,
chief financial officer of Littelfuse Inc.
in Chicago, which
makes fuses and
other power
management
products and is
in the hunt for
deals itself.

Home care a
growth engine
for BrightStar
Virtually every survey of
employment opportunities
over the next decade predicts
skyrocketing demand for athome caregivers to look after
America’s aging population.
BrightStar Group Holdings
Inc. aims to claim a good
share of that market.
From a standing start 10
years ago, when CEO Shelly
Sun grew distressed over
the limited options she had
for an infirm elderly relative and decided to start
her own home-care service,
she has expanded Gurneebased BrightStar to encompass 260 franchised locations in 38 states employing 8,000 people. Revenue
last year rose 58 percent to
almost $157 million. She
plans to expand to 400 locations by 2014.
“We think we can add 75
to 100 locations a year without allowing quality to suffer,” says Ms. Sun, 41. She
starts construction this
summer in Madison, Wis.,
on the company’s first facilities of its own, offering assisted-living care in a 36-bed
setting, with Alzheimer’s patients part of the target audience. She hopes to grow that
into a chain while expanding the home-care network
to 28 countries over the next
decade.
There may be plenty of
competition standing in the
way, notes Kevin Smith, interim executive director of
the National Private Duty Association in Indianapolis. He
estimates the number of
home-care agencies at 18,000
in the U.S., with more opening all the time. “The growth
in this industry has been startling,” Mr. Smith says. “I get
entrepreneurs calling me
constantly asking how to get
started in home care.”
BrightStar’s biggest rivals
include such franchise organizations as Right at
Home Inc. in Omaha, Neb.,
and Comfort Keepers Inc. in
Dayton, Ohio. Ms. Sun
hopes to outflank them by
reaching into more sophisticated segments, such as
nurse training and hospice
care. She also expects to take
BrightStar public eventually.

{210 See Page 31 for Sentinel’s listing}
When corporate budgets
turn tight amid an economic downturn, Sentinel
Technologies Inc. stands
to benefit.
Downers Grove-based
Sentinel got its start in the
1980s as a maintenance
service for IBM mainframes. Then in the ’90s
the company started reselling Cisco network
products. More recently,
Sentinel has built a network operations center
that remotely monitors

HOW ALMOST
ANYTHING CAN BE
DONE REMOTELY ON
A COMPUTER THESE
DAYS.”
Deborah Gillespie,
Joyce Foundation
clients’ networks, something that has come into
vogue for companies seeking to outsource more of
their hardware and software problem-solving.
“We can watch for hackers and for viruses invading a client’s network,”
says Dennis Hoelzer, 59,
who founded Sentinel and
has remained president
and CEO for the firm’s entire history. Last year was
the company’s best ever,
with revenue surging 31
percent, to $127.6 million.
Some of the credit goes to
Mr. Hoelzer’s decision to
expand—a new branch office opened in Grand
Rapids, Mich., in October—but even more important has been the decision
to focus on network monitoring. “A router or a
switch can go bad for a
client, or they can lose
connection with a carrier.
Or maybe they need a new
configuration in their software setup. We can see all
this happening and help
them deal with it immediately,” Mr. Hoelzer says.
For many clients, Sentinel brings substantial savings. The Loop-based Joyce
Foundation, a nonprofit
with $800 million in assets
and 25 employees, once
employed a full-time network engineer to oversee

its computers but found he
had trouble filling his days
with real work. He’s gone
now, replaced by an
arrangement in which Sentinel sends an employee to
the company for a half-day
each week while the rest of
the time providing remote
24-hour support and monitoring service.
“It’s impressive how almost anything can be done
remotely on a computer
these days,” says Deborah
Gillespie, Joyce’s vice
president of finance and
administration. “They can
do maintenance and repairs from their home office. If a server is acting
up, they can reboot it for
us. If something becomes
a real problem, I like the
fact they have a deep
bench, including people at
Cisco, to fall back on.”
There has been a lot of
acquisition and consolidation activity in the reseller
space lately, but Mr. Hoelzer is standing on the sidelines. “We’ve had 20 offers
over the years from bigger
companies interested in
buying us,” he says. “But
I’m comfortable with the
way things are now. In fact,
our recent growth has got
us all pretty excited here.”

Crain’s list of privately held companies, while the most comprehensive available, is not a complete list of private companies in the Chicago area because of the right of such companies to withhold
information. Information for this list is provided by the companies, and Crain’s takes their word for sales and employee figures. Cooperatives are included in the definition of privately held companies. On this list are companies with headquarters in the six-county region: Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will. (State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. is based outside the six-county area, but Crain’s made an exception for it because of its size; the local employment figure includes its McLean County headquarters.) All revenue and employee figures are as of 12/31/11 unless
noted. Crain’s estimates are in gray; actual revenue figures may vary. Crain’s estimates are based on industry analysis and benchmarks, news reports and a wide range of other sources. Asterisk:
