First Monetary Award Is Presented
The credit union’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Kortney
Siracusa, shown at left with Board Chairman Keith Williams, has been selected as
the recipient of the first annual HFDFCU Monetary Award. The son of Michael and
Jennifer Siracusa, Kortney is a 2011 graduate of Kamehameha Schools in Kapalama
and will be attending Oregon State University, where he plans to major in Engineering.
The Board established the HFDFCU Monetary Award earlier this year to help our
credit union families with the increasing costs of higher education. In June 2011,
student loan debt reached $830 billion, surpassing credit card debt in America!
HFDFCU presents one $1,000 award annually. Applicants are judged on scholastic
achievement, citizenship, character and a 1,000-word essay.

two members to serve on our Board
of Directors. The HFDFCU Board
is comprised of seven members
who each serve a three-year term.
This year, there are two members
whose terms are expiring.
The Board is responsible for
the credit union’s fiscal soundness
and stability. Board members must
be able to devote time for monthly
meetings and work with the HFDFCU management team to ensure
the credit union is serving the financial needs of its members.

Whenever there is a cry for help, fire fighters are first on the scene. As your credit union,
HFDFCU is proud to join you in coming to the aid of those in need. Your tremendous response
to our 2011 community service projects is greatly appreciated.

ALOHA FOR JAPAN – Your generous donations during this
recent campaign enabled us to present a check for $832 to the
Japan-America Society of Hawaii to benefit victims of the catastrophic 8.9 magnitude earthquake
and massive tsunami that hit eastern Japan in March. Our heartfelt thanks to the volunteers, staff
and members whose contributions will further the long healing process of those affected.
HAWAII FOOD BANK – Our collection of monetary and food donations continues through
December 22, 2011. Please join us in making the holidays brighter for struggling families who
would otherwise go hungry this Christmas. We are collecting canned meats and fish, canned
meals (i.e., spaghetti, chili and stews), canned soups, canned vegetables and canned fruits. And
remember, for every $10 donated, the Hawaii Foodbank is able to distribute 25 meals. Mahalo!
BE ALERT! BEWARE!
Be on the lookout for fraud!
Spotting fraud is not difficult if you
are on guard. Just remember: If something
sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a
scam. Here’s a few to look out for:
A Nigerian letter sent by mail or
email asks for funds to help a government
official transfer large sums of money out
of Nigeria. This is a scam to rob you of
your money! Notify the FBI, Secret
Service or U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
Text messages or emails saying
your account has been compromised or
frozen and that you must verify your
information by responding to their text or
email. Don’t do it! You never know who’s
behind that text or email. Never give your
account information to a stranger. Your
financial institution will NEVER ask for
information this way!
Telemarketing scams try to get
your personal information or cash by saying you’ve won a prize or check. Don’t
give out any information! Hang up!

smart. Call the credit union when you are
in doubt. Don’t become a victim of fraud!
