OASIS puts into practice the
findings of the landmark MacArthur
Foundation study of Aging in America.
Researchers Rowe and Kahn found
that the key ingredients for a high
quality of life are maintaining a low
risk for disease, a high level of
engagement with the community, and
high physical and cognitive function, and
“it is the combination of all three
that represents the concept of
successful aging fully.”

Try Your Hand at Sculpture
101
Carlton Crittenden, retired Art Teacher and OASIS
member
Modern sculpture seems to stimulate many questions
from the viewer. What is it? How is it done? Why? This
class will give you the opportunity to work with materials
and methods sculptors use to develop their creations and
to gain an understanding of how these artists work. You
will have the opportunity to develop and express your own
ideas by creating sculptures using time-tested materials
and methods as well as the materials of modern sculptors.
Note: The instructor will discuss the materials and
equipment you will need for each class at the beginning
of the first class, so you may wish to wait before you buy
anything. If you have done craft work in the past, you
may already have most of what you need. For class one,
bring a few sheets of white or colored printed paper,
scissors, a roll of Scotch invisible tape and an X-ACTO
utility knife. Instructor will provide heavy cardboard for
the boards and bases you will need.

Although often pegged as science fiction writers, Ray
Bradbury and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., are much more. Their
prolific accomplishments have spanned decades and
influenced myriads of other authors. With unique styles
that are sometimes cynical, often humorous, nearly
always satirical, these talented men have become iconic
personalities.
Examining both their novels and their short stories, we
will analyze and discuss the significant impact of these
two essential artists. Using informal lectures and seminar

Great Jewish Writers
111
Harvey Teres, Ken Frieden, and Miriam Elman, Syracuse
University
Join us for this three-part series focusing on acclaimed
Jewish writers.
July 7: Philip Roth
Harvey Teres, PhD, Associate Professor of English and
Director of Judaic Studies Program, Syracuse University
Philip Roth is perhaps America’s preeminent living
writer, and one of the most decorated. He has won
the Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal for the Arts, the
Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal, two National
Book Awards, two National Book Critics Circle Awards,
a PEN/ Bellow Award, three PEN/Faulkner Awards, two
PEN/Nabokov Awards and the Man Booker Award. He is
only the third living American writer to have his works
collected by the Library of America, and he is on many
critics’ short lists for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Yet he
remains a controversial figure for some of his depictions
of Jewish American life and his treatment of women and
sexuality. This lecture will explore the life and literary
career of this exceptional American writer.
July 14: Franz Kafka
Ken Frieden, PhD, B.G. Rudolph Professor of Judaic
Studies, Syracuse University
Born into a German-speaking Jewish family in Prague,
Kafka is one of the giants of modern literature. His stories
and novels, with their existential themes of persecution,
alienation and absurdity, seem to anticipate the terrors
to come. Professor Frieden will discuss some of Kafka’s
short parables, such as Before the Law, An Imperial
Message and Jackals and Arabs.
July 21: David Grossman: Israel’s Moral Compass and
the Zionist Dream
Miriam F. Elman, PhD, Associate Professor of Political
Science, Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public
Affairs, Syracuse University
Elman will discuss the perspectives on Zionism, Israel,
and citizenship that emerge from David Grossman’s
masterful novel To the End of the Land (published in
2008 in Hebrew; English translation in 2010). Through a
close reading of particular passages in the novel, Elman
will show how the beautifully written powerful anti-war
Summer 2015
novel is ultimately a tribute to the resilience of both the
human and the Israeli spirit.

The People and the Stories behind 40 Food
Favorites
Chuck D’Imperio, Author of A Taste of Upstate New York:
The People and the Stories behind 40 Food Favorites and
radio broadcaster at WDOS in Oneonta
Upstate New York is the birthplace of many of America’s
favorite foods. The chicken wing was born in a bar in
Buffalo, the potato chip originated in the kitchen of a
glitzy Saratoga Springs hotel, the salt potato got its start
along the marshy shores of a Syracuse lake, and Thousand
Island dressing was created in a hotel along the St.
Lawrence Seaway.
In this book, D’Imperio travels across the region to
discover the stories and people behind 40 iconic foods of
Upstate New York. He introduces readers to the black dirt
farmers of Orange County who give America its besttasting onions, to the Catskill’s Candy Cane King, and to
“Charlie the Butcher,” purveyor of the best beef on weck
in the state!
A Taste of Upstate New York: The People and the Stories

Question of Sanity: The True Story of Female Serial Killers
in 19th Century New York
113
Michael Keene, writer, documentary filmmaker, and
author of Question of Sanity: The True Story of Female
Serial Killers in 19th Century New York
Award-winning writer and documentary filmmaker
Michael T. Keene will discuss his latest book, Question
of Sanity, which examines the lives and times of 17
female serial killers and the murders they committed
in New York during the 19th century. The women who
serve as the subjects for this book all share compelling
stories. Most of them were from North Central New York
and lived along the Erie Canal in small, isolated rural
communities. Some of the women chronicled in the book
are Lizzie Halliday, convicted of murdering nine of her
own family members; Catherine Claus, who boasted of
killing 15 infants in her care; Caroline D. Sorgenfrie,
charged with the murder of her four husbands; and Ella
Holdridge, the 14-year-old thrill killer. The book will be
available for purchase at the end of class. Note: Class is

Celluloid Singing Sensations: Great Vocalists on Film
123
Susan Edwards Harvith, MMP/Museum Practice,
University of Michigan [U-M]; former adjunct professor
of film, Syracuse University; with John Harvith, BA/
Music History and JD, U-M; former music critic and
correspondent, High Fidelity/Musical America. The
Harviths are coauthors of the first oral history of
recording, Edison, Musicians, and the Phonograph.
Together they have interviewed legendary musicians, as
well as film and TV figures.
Beginning in the early silent era, filmmakers in
Hollywood and Europe were enchanted with the idea of
capturing each era’s most bankable vocalists on celluloid.
This course will introduce students to both feature films
and cinematic glimpses of some of the 20th century’s
most notable singers on screen, from Geraldine Farrar
in the silent era, through Bing Crosby, Irene Dunne,
Jeanette MacDonald, Lily Pons, Paul Robeson, Lawrence
Tibbett and Grace Moore in the 1930s, to Mario Lanza
in the 1950s. Among the many other vocalists who will
be discussed, seen and heard are not only famous singers
such as Deanna Durbin, Nelson Eddy, Allan Jones,
Giovanni Martinelli, John McCormack, Ezio Pinza
and Rosa Ponselle, but also lesser-known but equally
significant vocal luminaries such as Anna Case, Miliza
Korjus, Margaret Matzenauer and Marion Talley. The
instructors will offer in-depth background information
about the singers, some of whom they have interviewed;
discuss the artistic and cinematic climate of their times;
analyze the techniques employed in the films; and play
rare recordings from the Edwards-Harvith archive.

From Cover-Ups to Infotainment: Hollywood’s Take on Journalism,
1976-2008
124
Susan Edwards Harvith, MMP/Museum Practice,
University of Michigan; former adjunct professor of Film,
Syracuse University; and interviewer of legendary film
and television figures
Over the past four decades, Hollywood filmmakers
have responded to the press’ coverage of the Watergate
scandals and the pre- and post-Watergate evolution
of TV news with a mix of earnestness, cynicism and
satire. As network electronic journalism has shifted
from courageous fact gathering to infotainment, film
producers and screenwriters have not shied away from
exposing the strengths and weaknesses of the Fourth
Estate. This course will examine a half-dozen of these
timely movies, from 1976’s All the President’s Men and
Network, through 1979’s China Syndrome and 1987’s
Broadcast News, to 2005’s Good Night, Good Luck and
2008’s Frost/Nixon. With such directors as Sidney Lumet,
Alan Pakula, Ron Howard, George Clooney and James
Brooks and stars including Albert Brooks, Faye Dunaway,
Peter Finch, Jane Fonda, Dustin Hoffman, Holly Hunter,
William Hurt, Frank Langella, Jack Lemmon and Robert
Redford, these modern films have a great deal to say
about how well we have been served by the media in postWorld War II America.
Instructor Harvith will discuss the political and social
contexts in which the films were created and analyze the
technical and creative cinematic techniques employed by
the filmmakers. Large-format film screenings will
complement in-depth PowerPoint lectures.

The impact of World War I on America was tremendous.
We were suddenly a premier world power and an
economic giant. For the first time in our history, more
Americans earned their living off farms, more Americans
lived in cities, and more Americans had more money than
ever before. But there was deep trouble coming. New
economic and social realities tested the presidency,
especially at the disastrous end of the decade. In this
segment we will look at the men who occupied the office

The Seven Years War and the French and Indian War
132
Charles Coon, retired Social Studies Teacher, Baker
High School, adjunct Professor of History, Onondaga
Community College and SUNY College at Cortland, and
adjunct Professor of Educational Methods, SUNY College
at Oswego
In the 1750s and 1760s a war was fought among the major
powers of Europe, including England, France, Prussia,
Austria, Russia and numerous other countries. It began in
North America and spread from there to Europe, India,
West Africa, The Philippines and Central America. Some
historians have even called it World War I. In French
North America (aka Canada) it was called the War of the
Conquest; in British North America (aka the Thirteen
Colonies) it was called the French and Indian War. It is
estimated that 900,000 to 1,400,000 people died in this
global conflict.
The focus of this course is threefold. First, we will discuss
the overall Seven Years’ War, which was primarily, but
not exclusively, a European conflict between two major
combatants, France and England, with an ever-changing
field of other European countries—changing sides
as the war progressed. England and France were the
superpowers of the 18th century, and they fought a series
of wars in a Battle for Empire.
Second, we will look at the French and Indian War,
largely fought in what is now New York State. Lake
Champlain, Fort Oswego and Fort Niagara were major
battlegrounds. James Fenimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking
Tales begin with the French and Indian War, and George
Washington had his first (and almost last) military
experience in one of the first encounters of the war, The
Battle of Monongahela.
Finally, we will explore a current concept that has
become a favorite because so often it is valid: The Law
of Unintended Consequences! This idea summarizes the
results of the conflict very well, because by winning the
war, driving France out of North America and settling
several Native American issues, England and the Colonies
had set the stage for The American Revolution.

developed over the following 1,300 years was unknown to

Ways and Means for Managing Up137
The Healing Power of Humor
Retired Army Colonel F. William Smullen, director,

Thinking and planning strategically are relevant factors
when it comes to dealing with current events and
designing policies that comprise a deliberate effort to
advance vital national or business interests. In his recently
released book, Ways and Means for Managing Up, author
Bill Smullen describes weighty decisions he witnessed
as an advisor to two chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
and to senior Army leaders for whom he worked during
his Army career. His strategies for helping the boss make
successful decisions take into consideration resources
available, costs involved, potential consequences, and
the risks and ramifications associated with established
objectives. Smullen finds ways to apply his experiences to
make an honest appraisal of where the world is today and
what it is likely to look like tomorrow.

The Adversary–Uncertainty
138
Retired Army Colonel F. William Smullen, director,
National Security Studies, The Maxwell School, Syracuse
University, former State Department Chief of Staff
Whether Russia, China, Syria, Iran, North Korea, Egypt
or Saudi Arabia, each of these governments has enough
resources and self-confidence to shrug off requests and
demands from Washington. The U.S. is less able to
build coalitions, forge trade agreements, win support for
sanctions, broker international compromise or persuade
others to follow its lead than at any other time since
WWII. The situation makes for the nation’s contemporary
adversary–uncertainty. And the majority of Americans
don’t seem to care! They say the U.S. should mind its own
business internationally and let other countries get along
as best they can or however they want on their own.
This lecture will suggest a game plan that would rely
heavily on enduring inner logic that anticipates problems
and brings to bear available resources–political,
economic, diplomatic or military–at a decisive moment
and point to confront an objective or adversary.

Michael Affleck, JD, Syracuse University, Ed.D.,

A great mystery of the last 2000 years has been the
identity of the person who wrote the foundational
document of Christianity, the Gospel according to Mark.
This gospel is perhaps the most widely read book in
Western civilization. Amazingly, it has maintained its
influence over time without ever having yielded the secret
of who wrote it. The author, now honored as a saint,
hid behind a pen name. The presenter has solved this
mystery! He recently announced his findings in Leuven,

Science
Forensic Anthropology: Fact and Fiction
Identifying Our Native Ferns
501
Meredith A.B. Ellis, MA, PhD, Adjunct Professor of
Anthropology and Forensic Sciences, Syracuse University
Because of television shows such as Bones, CSI, and
NCIS, the public is fascinated with the field of forensic
anthropology. But what is the field really like? In this
course, we’ll discuss the basic methods that forensic
anthropologists use to learn about a person from skeletal
remains. We will discover how we can determine age,
sex and ancestry from a skeleton, and how forensic
anthropologists “read” a life time of experiences, diseases
and traumas from a body. We will explore some of the
tough issues forensic anthropologists navigate, such as
race, and whether or not you can see it in the skeleton.
What does a bullet do to a skull? Can you determine
cause of death from bones alone? We’ll talk through
actual case studies to see how the work is done, and
compare that to methods shown in fictional media.

Teaching, recipient of National Science Teachers
Association Distinguished Teacher award, and
Earthwatch Fellow
Share the experiences of instructor Len Sharp, who
spent part of one summer studying the geology and
antiquities of present-day and ancient Santorini,
Greece, as a member of an Earthwatch Research group.
Santorini’s history goes back 3,000 years. At the time of
26 www.oasisnet.org/Syracuse-NY
Akrotiri’s demise (buried under approximately 90 feet
of pumice that was deposited during about 24 hours in a
cataclysmic, volcanic eruption) the Minoan civilization
was the dominant culture on the island. This presentation
will consider Minoan ruins found within the buried city
of Akrotiri, Santorini geography and geoarcheology,
relics of the Minoan civilization, the connection between
Santorini and the legend of Atlantis, Plato’s discussion
of Atlantis and the myth in other cultures, other possible
sites for the existence of Atlantis, searching for preeruptive boundaries, a look at the ancient city of Akrotiri,
and Santorini today.

Intergenerational Tutor Training
In this class, you will complete an extensive training
program based on a proven six-part plan of activities.
You’ll learn ways to draw out the child’s experiences
and create simple stories that form the basis for reading
activities. You may also attend bi-monthly tutor meetings
for continued training and the chance to share your
successes and challenges with other tutors.
Tutors work one on one with a child who has been
referred by the teacher. Currently, we have tutors at
several elementary schools in the Syracuse City School
District and Willow Field Elementary School in the
Liverpool Central School District.
Note: No teaching experience is required but you must
have a love of learning, a love of children and reliable
transportation. All training materials will be provided.
Lunch will also be provided.

Special Programs & Services
Art Walls at OASIS
Reach Out and Read
Art Walls is a continuous art exhibit program that
displays the works of OASIS artists on the walls
of the OASIS hallways and classrooms and is
coordinated by Evelyn Fiorenza, OASIS Art Instructor.
Note: Artwork to be displayed in the summer
trimester should be dropped off at OASIS between
April 20 and May 8.
This is a program that promotes early literacy by bringing new and gently used books into pediatric exam and
waiting rooms and encouraging parents to read aloud
to their children. Volunteers read aloud to children,
serving as an example to parents of the effectiveness
of reading in entertaining children and in helping them
learn. Since 1989, Reach Out and Read pediatricians
have been prescribing books for their young patients
at more than 2,000 hospitals and health centers. Reach
Out and Read has been offered at University Hospital’s
Pediatric and Adolescent Center since 1990. Please
consider volunteering your time to read aloud to children in the waiting room at University Hospital, our
OASIS sponsor. Training and volunteer support are offered to assure a positive experience for all. Interested?
Call Marsha Kernan, MA, CCLS, Child Life Specialist,
Upstate Medical University, at 464-2084.

Are you interested in tutoring?
OASIS trains and places volunteer tutors with children in grades K - 3,
building the student's self-esteem and love of learning.
Tutors work one on one with a child who has been referred by the teacher. Currently we have tutors at several
elementary schools in the Syracuse City School District and Willow Field Elementary School in the Liverpool
Central School District.
Training and materials are provided. No teaching experience is required but you must
have a love of learning, a love of children and reliable transportation.
Visit page 27 and register for class #706 under Volunteering
A Note About Mailings: If you are moving, please change your address
with OASIS. If you no longer wish to receive our catalog, please inform the center.
Undeliverable, unnecessary and returned mailings expend valuable resources.
Thank you for your consideration.
