The Harviths are coauthors of the first oral history of recording, Edison, Musicians, and the Phonograph. Together they have interviewed legendary musicians, as well as film and TV figures. Beginning in the early silent era, filmmakers in Hollywood and Europe were enchanted with the idea of capturing each era’s most bankable vocalists on celluloid. This course will introduce students to both feature films and cinematic glimpses of some of the 20th century’s most notable singers on screen, from Geraldine Farrar in the silent era, through Bing Crosby, Irene Dunne, Jeanette MacDonald, Lily Pons, Paul Robeson, Lawrence Tibbett and Grace Moore in the 1930s, to Mario Lanza in the 1950s. Among the many other vocalists who will be discussed, seen and heard are not only famous singers such as Deanna Durbin, Nelson Eddy, Allan Jones, Giovanni Martinelli, John McCormack, Ezio Pinza and Rosa Ponselle, but also lesser-known but equally significant vocal luminaries such as Anna Case, Miliza Korjus, Margaret Matzenauer and Marion Talley. The instructors will offer in-depth background information about the singers, some of whom they have interviewed; discuss the artistic and cinematic climate of their times; analyze the techniques employed in the films; and play rare recordings from the Edwards-Harvith archive. As network electronic journalism has shifted from courageous fact gathering to infotainment, film producers and screenwriters have not shied away from exposing the strengths and weaknesses of the Fourth Estate. This course will examine a half-dozen of these timely movies, from 1976’s All the President’s Men and Network, through 1979’s China Syndrome and 1987’s Broadcast News, to 2005’s Good Night, Good Luck and 2008’s Frost/Nixon. With such directors as Sidney Lumet, Alan Pakula, Ron Howard, George Clooney and James Brooks and stars including Albert Brooks, Faye Dunaway, Peter Finch, Jane Fonda, Dustin Hoffman, Holly Hunter, William Hurt, Frank Langella, Jack Lemmon and Robert Redford, these modern films have a great deal to say about how well we have been served by the media in postWorld War II America. Instructor Harvith will discuss the political and social contexts in which the films were created and analyze the technical and creative cinematic techniques employed by the filmmakers. Large-format film screenings will complement in-depth PowerPoint lectures. This course will explain what makes Gone With the Wind as remarkable and fresh to today’s audiences as it did to those of 75 years ago while setting it within its cultural/ historical context and supplying fascinating behind-thescenes details about the making of the film during its unprecedented 3.5-year gestation period. We were suddenly a premier world power and an economic giant. For the first time in our history, more Americans earned their living off farms, more Americans lived in cities, and more Americans had more money than ever before. But there was deep trouble coming. New economic and social realities tested the presidency, especially at the disastrous end of the decade. In this segment we will look at the men who occupied the office from the end of Wilson’s term to the beginning of FDR’s. There is no need to have taken any previous classes to enjoy this one! Summer 2015 The Seven Years War and the French and Indian War 132 Charles Coon, retired Social Studies Teacher, Baker High School, adjunct Professor of History, Onondaga Community College and SUNY College at Cortland, and adjunct Professor of Educational Methods, SUNY College at Oswego In the 1750s and 1760s a war was fought among the major powers of Europe, including England, France, Prussia, Austria, Russia and numerous other countries. It began in North America and spread from there to Europe, India, West Africa, The Philippines and Central America. Some historians have even called it World War I. In French North America (aka Canada) it was called the War of the Conquest; in British North America (aka the Thirteen Colonies) it was called the French and Indian War. It is estimated that 900,000 to 1,400,000 people died in this global conflict. The focus of this course is threefold. First, we will discuss the overall Seven Years’ War, which was primarily, but not exclusively, a European conflict between two major combatants, France and England, with an ever-changing field of other European countries—changing sides as the war progressed. England and France were the superpowers of the 18th century, and they fought a series of wars in a Battle for Empire. Second, we will look at the French and Indian War, largely fought in what is now New York State. Lake Champlain, Fort Oswego and Fort Niagara were major battlegrounds. James Fenimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking Tales begin with the French and Indian War, and George Washington had his first (and almost last) military experience in one of the first encounters of the war, The Battle of Monongahela. Finally, we will explore a current concept that has become a favorite because so often it is valid: The Law of Unintended Consequences! This idea summarizes the results of the conflict very well, because by winning the war, driving France out of North America and settling several Native American issues, England and the Colonies had set the stage for The American Revolution. By far the most remote permanently inhabited place on Earth, Rapa Nui was born of volcanic fury some 30,000 years ago and settled by Polynesians circa 400 AD. The culture that developed over the following 1,300 years was unknown to the outside world until discovered by the Dutch Captain Roggeveen Easter Sunday 1721. In his recently released book, Ways and Means for Managing Up, author Bill Smullen describes weighty decisions he witnessed as an advisor to two chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and to senior Army leaders for whom he worked during his Army career. His strategies for helping the boss make successful decisions take into consideration resources available, costs involved, potential consequences, and the risks and ramifications associated with established objectives. Fridays Jul 17 - Jul 24 1:00 - 2:30 Fee: $24 2 sessions OASIS Studio The Adversary–Uncertainty 138 Retired Army Colonel F. William Smullen, director, National Security Studies, The Maxwell School, Syracuse University, former State Department Chief of Staff Whether Russia, China, Syria, Iran, North Korea, Egypt or Saudi Arabia, each of these governments has enough resources and self-confidence to shrug off requests and demands from Washington. The U.S. is less able to build coalitions, forge trade agreements, win support for sanctions, broker international compromise or persuade others to follow its lead than at any other time since WWII. The situation makes for the nation’s contemporary adversary–uncertainty. And the majority of Americans don’t seem to care! They say the U.S. should mind its own business internationally and let other countries get along as best they can or however they want on their own. This lecture will suggest a game plan that would rely heavily on enduring inner logic that anticipates problems and brings to bear available resources–political, economic, diplomatic or military–at a decisive moment and point to confront an objective or adversary. We will discover how we can determine age, sex and ancestry from a skeleton, and how forensic anthropologists “read” a life time of experiences, diseases and traumas from a body. We will explore some of the tough issues forensic anthropologists navigate, such as race, and whether or not you can see it in the skeleton. What does a bullet do to a skull? Can you determine cause of death from bones alone? We’ll talk through actual case studies to see how the work is done, and compare that to methods shown in fictional media. Summer 2015 (315) 464 - 6555 37 Special Programs & Services Art Walls at OASIS Reach Out and Read Art Walls is a continuous art exhibit program that displays the works of OASIS artists on the walls of the OASIS hallways and classrooms and is coordinated by Evelyn Fiorenza, OASIS Art Instructor. Note: Artwork to be displayed in the summer trimester should be dropped off at OASIS between April 20 and May 8. This is a program that promotes early literacy by bringing new and gently used books into pediatric exam and waiting rooms and encouraging parents to read aloud to their children. Volunteers read aloud to children, serving as an example to parents of the effectiveness of reading in entertaining children and in helping them learn. Since 1989, Reach Out and Read pediatricians have been prescribing books for their young patients at more than 2,000 hospitals and health centers. Reach Out and Read has been offered at University Hospital’s Pediatric and Adolescent Center since 1990. Please consider volunteering your time to read aloud to children in the waiting room at University Hospital, our OASIS sponsor. Training and volunteer support are offered to assure a positive experience for all. Interested? Call Marsha Kernan, MA, CCLS, Child Life Specialist, Upstate Medical University, at 464-2084. OASIS trains and places volunteer tutors with children in grades K - 3, building the student's self-esteem and love of learning. Tutors work one on one with a child who has been referred by the teacher. Currently we have tutors at several elementary schools in the Syracuse City School District and Willow Field Elementary School in the Liverpool Central School District. Training and materials are provided. No teaching experience is required but you must have a love of learning, a love of children and reliable transportation. Visit page 27 and register for class #706 under Volunteering A Note About Mailings: If you are moving, please change your address with OASIS. If you no longer wish to receive our catalog, please inform the center. Undeliverable, unnecessary and returned mailings expend valuable resources. Thank you for your consideration.
