Career Opportunities in the Federal Bureau of Investigation |
Speaker: Dr. Karie Marsden Gibson, PsyD, LP | Time: 12:30-1:30
Are you interested in working for the FBI as a licensed psychologist? Dr. Gibson will discuss her experiences
as a liaison for the Behavioral Analysis Units and her work with homicides, missing persons, kidnappings
and counterterrorism. She will also describe how she balances her various roles and professional experiences
with her training.
Dr. Karie Gibson is a licensed psychologist and has served as a Special Agent with the FBI for six years
and is assigned to the International Terrorism, Horn of Africa squad where she investigates acts of terrorism
in the United States and abroad. She is the Primary Coordinator for the Minneapolis Division’s National
Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) Program and routinely works with law enforcement
agencies as a liaison for the Behavioral Analysis Units on homicide, missing person, counterterrorism,
threat of violence, and kidnapping cases.
Student Loan Forgiveness in Underserved Areas | Speaker: Dr. Jolene Wirkus, PsyD, LP |

Students that embark on a career in professional psychology can incur a large amount of debt. Student
Loan Forgiveness programs offer recent graduates the opportunity to repay their college debt by working in
underserved communities. Dr. Jolene Wirkus will discuss her personal experiences with the Student Loan
Forgiveness program and serving clients in a rural community.
Dr. Jolene Wirkus completed her clinical internship at Dakota Counseling, Inc. in Mitchell, SD from
2005-2006 and graduated from Argosy University in 2007 with a focus on domestic violence and trauma.
In early 2006, she applied for various National Health Service Corps (NHSC)-approved employment sites
and decided on Southwestern Mental Health Center (SMHC) as her best fit. Dr. Wirkus started working
at SMHC in September, 2006. Now, she performs psychotherapy in both Cottonwood and Jackson County.

Life After Earning a Bachelor’s Degree: Exploring Graduate School and Careers in
Psychology | Speaker: Dr. Mark Carlson, PsyD, LP | Times: 9:30-10:30 & 10:30-11:30
Opportunities in graduate school psychology can be endless! Dr. Mark Carlson will explore the different
levels of licensure and practice options available within the field of psychology. He will also discuss multiple
areas of practice including consulting, contracts, training, clinical practice, public speaking, and publication.
As well as examine the current industry trends.
Dr. Mark Carlson is the founder, President/CEO, and co-owner of Mental Health Systems, PC (MHS). MHS
is one of the largest DBT-specialized clinics in the upper Midwest with three locations and 35 active DBT
groups. He is also the Vice-President of Dialectical Behavior Therapy National Certification and Accreditation
Association (DBTNCAA). He has served as the Clinical Director of multiple clinics including one of the
largest Rule-29 clinics in the Midwest.

Careers in School-Based Mental Health | Speaker: Dr. Mark Sander, PsyD, LP |

What does it mean to be a “school-based mental health” professional? Dr. Mark Sander will define that
area and will describe the current opportunities in the field for participants interested in a career in
psychology that is focused on children in a school setting. Participants will learn the differences in training
and work responsibilities between counselors, social workers, school psychologists, and school-based
mental health professionals.
Dr. Mark Sander is the Senior Clinical Psychologist for Hennepin County as well as the Mental Health
Coordinator for the Minneapolis Public Schools. Dr. Sander earned his doctorate at the Minnesota School
of Professional Psychology and completed post-doctoral work at the University of Maryland where he
became immersed in the school-based mental health movement. Over the past decade, Dr. Sander has
helped to create systemic linkages and supports resulting in school-based or school-linked services.
Private Practice: The Good and the Bad | Speaker: Dr. Scott Fischer, PhD, LP |

Would you like to go into business for yourself? This workshop will focus on the advantages and
disadvantages of starting your own private practice. Through this practical experience, Dr. Scott Fischer
will engage the audience in a discussion of the many exciting and mundane aspects of opening a
private practice.
Dr. Fischer attended the PhD program in Clinical Psychology at the University of Oregon. He completed his
pre-doctoral internship at Yale University and worked for several years as a psychologist in the Washington,
DC area before moving to Minnesota in 1999. Dr. Fischer’s private practice is focused mostly on forensic
evaluations, but he also provides some therapy.
Play Therapy | Speaker: Erin Leach, MA, LMFT, RPT | Time: 12:30-1:30
How can psychology be applied to your work? The utilization of psychologists in the workplace may be
considered a new concept, but psychology has always played a role at work. At the core of any expert
industrial and organizational psychologist’s practice is the understanding of basic psychological principles
such as human behavior, research, cognition, ethics, and personality. These psychologists have the
opportunity to solve organizational issues through organizational development and change leadership to
improve employee well-being and effectiveness at work.
If you are interested in developing a career that includes or is focused on working with children who
have experienced trauma then this workshop is for you! Erin Leach will demonstrate what is meant by
“play therapy” and how to become a registered play therapist. Participants will leave this workshop
a clear understanding of the steps they will need to take to become a registered play therapist.
Dr. John Merladet is a Board Certified Business, Organizational, and Consulting Psychologist, with over
fifteen years of experience in the application of psychological and behavioral principles to facilitate individual
and team growth and change. He is the owner of the Summit Leadership Consulting group, which focuses
on selection, litigation support, coaching, career management, and HR Consultation. His MBA specialty is
in HRM, and he holds a BBA in Marketing.
Erin Leach, MA, LMFT, RPT is the owner of the Minnesota Counseling and Therapy Center, where she sees
clients as young as 18 months old. Ms. Leach is a graduate of the Master of Arts in Marriage and Family
Therapy program at Argosy University, Twin Cities and is a registered play therapist. She is an adjunct
instructor in the Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy program, teaching Child & Adolescent
Therapy and Group Therapy.
