1W is not required but is recommended, if available.
Completing IAW (Intermediate Algebra Workshop) with a grade of “C” or higher allows students to enroll in Math 8A
Winter Quarter. Students do not earn units for this course.
3 Math sequences include either 8A-8B-9B OR 5-9A-9B. Students follow the appropriate sequence depending upon initial placement.
4 A minimum of 36 UD (upper division) units is required for a degree in Biology. Biological Sciences requires specific
courses chosen from one of 9 tracks. A recommended first UD course is Biology 102, Intro Genetics.
5 For the B.S. degree in Biology: An additional 16 units of "related" courses is required (see list of approved courses:
http://cnasstudent.ucr.edu/Biol%60UD%60and%60Related%6010S.pdf ).

Less Intensive Pace/ Summer Session
There are many reasons why a student might wish to complete the core curriculum courses at a less intensive
pace. If you are unsure of your ultimate educational objectives, you may wish to have more freedom in your schedule
to take elective or breadth courses in other programs during your first few years. You may also wish to take fewer
units per quarter if there are other significant demands on your time such as part-time employment, family
responsibilities, athletics, social commitments, etc., or if the need arises to spend more time on each of your classes.
Since summer session is optional, we have created the sample course plans below for students who wish to take core
courses at a less intensive pace while attempting to complete their degree in 4 years. Students who work at this less
intensive pace without utilizing summer options should expect to complete their degree in approximately 5 years.

1A-1B-1C and 1LA-1LB-1LC, Chemistry 112A-112B-112C, Physics 2B-2C and 2LB-2LC are usually offered at
UCR during Summer Session.
7 BioChem 100 may be taken concurrently with Chemistry 112C, but Chemistry 112C has content helpful for BioChem 100
and most students in BioChem 100 will have completed Chemistry 112C.
8 CNAS Breadth requirements can be viewed at http://cnasstudent.ucr.edu/students/Breadth.pdf
9 Students entering UCR with limited AP or Community College credit will need to complete Elective units in order to meet
the minimum 180 units.
