One hour of lecture per week. Course Objectives: 5-6 general, overall objectives of the course. 1. Provide students with an introduction to the profession of pharmacy 2. Provide students with an overview of TSU and the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences 3. Provide students with an overview of pharmacy careers 4. Familiarize students with current pharmacy practice trends 5. Assist in student professional development and life-long learning 6. Familiarize students with pre-professional and professional requirements 7. Introduce the Top 300 Most Prescribed drugs Prerequisites: This is an elective course in the pharmacy curriculum –No prerequisites Required Text(s): (1) Robert J. Michael Posey APhA Publication, 2009. Grading Criteria: There will be three 1-hour examinations at 100 points per exam. A bonus group presentation (10 points) will be included; bonus quizzes and assignments may also be given. Arrangements will be made so that SCANTRONS will be distributed by the instructor at the time of the examination Students are allowed 2 WEEKS following the date of an exam to contact Dr. Milton regarding examination discrepancies. No further consideration will be given after this time. Any form of CHEATING on examinations will be dealt with severely as prescribed by COPHS and University policies. The final X will or will not be cumulative and will count 200 points. A student with a valid DOCUMENTED, emergency situation should, therefore, PERSONALLY contact Dr. Milton prior to the examination, if possible. Otherwise, notice of the emergency MUST be made within 24 hours. Students should demonstrate appropriate professional conduct as described in the TSU Student Code of Conduct (see student life policies,TSU web site); TSU Student Handbook ; and the COPHS Student Academic Handbook, approved fall, 1009. These conducts include, but are not limited to, mandatory class attendance, prompt classroom arrival, no cheating, plagiarism, or other unprofessional conduct (such as cell phones or text messaging). No electronic devices (including cell phones, computers, PDAs or programmable calculators) are allowed during examinations. Will examinations be returned to student? X yes; no -NOTE: Hourly exams will be returned but not the final examination. The final examination is available for review with the course coordinator. 2 Syllabus Format & Content Students: Self assessment of your performance in COPHS classes is critical to maintaining good academic standing in the college. The following helpful hints are to assist you with your self assessment: Pick up the results of your examinations in a timely manner Review your examination results with the instructor Follow on with the instructor to assure that examination grades are corrected when there is grading error Compute your pre-final examination course grade based on the results of each examination, quiz or other assigned work Meet with the instructor to get answers to your questions during conference hours or by appointment Document individual issues of concern with the department chair. Please make sure that you have performed these student responsibilities. This will help you understand the status of your academic performance in classes and minimize the types and number of complaints that you might have after semester grades are awarded. The student has the responsibility of performance of the work of the course, including the taking of examinations at the time they are administered to the entire class. UNIVERSITY POLICY ON ATTENDANCE: All Students are required to be present for all class meetings of any course for which they are enrolled. Excused absences: Students are responsible for providing the faculty member reason(s) for his or her absence with documentation within one week of the absence. The validity of the absence MAY constitute an excused absence. Note: Students representing the university in an official capacity must notify Dr. Milton at least 24 hrs prior to the activity. It is preferred that the student submit an anticipated schedule of activities for the Spring 2011 semester as soon as such schedule becomes available. 4 Syllabus Format & Content Sanction for non-attendance: Within the first 20 days of class, a student may be dropped from the course after accumulating absences in excess of 10 percent of the total hours of instruction (lecture and/or lab). [Note: For a class meeting once a week this is the equivalent of missing two class meetings from the first class day.] Tardiness It is the responsibility of the student to attend classes ON TIME. Students arriving 5 minutes after the scheduled time for class will be marked as tardy. THREE TARDIES will result in an automatic deduction of 2 points from the total points earned in the class for each offense. Dress Code A standard of dress appropriate for college students who aspire to become health professionals is required. This included the following: Women-NO shorts, leggings, haltertops, midriff tops, see- through tops, low cut attire or mini-skirts (skirts lengths should be no shorter than the length of arms to fingertips when arms are extended to the sides); Men-NO shorts, undershirts, baggy pants (pants that hang on the hip), or earrings. Neat and clean grooming of hair and good personal hygiene should also be observed. Students inappropriately dressed may be dismissed from the class.
