Martial arts actor Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco, California, on
November 27, 1940. His father was from Hong Kong, and the family
moved back there when Lee was still a young child. From around
1946, Lee started appearing in films as a child star. He also learned
dancing and, later, the Chinese martial arts known as kung fu.
As a young man, Lee moved to Seattle, Washington, where he continued
his education, and started teaching martial arts. After studying, Lee set
up his own martial arts schools, first in Seattle, then in California.
As well as teaching, Lee started appearing on television. His most
famous role was in the 1960s' show 'The Green Hornet', where he
played the hero's sidekick. But Lee struggled to be cast in the lead role in
any shows because there was prejudice against Asian actors at the time.
As a result, Lee moved back to Hong Kong in the early 1970s.
There he starred in the film 'Fists of Fury', and a year later the film 'The
Chinese Connection', which broke box office records in Hong Kong. Lee
then directed his own film, called 'Return of the Dragon'.
With his popularity in Asia growing, Lee wanted to increase his fame in
America. He starred in the film 'Enter the Dragon', which was the first
martial arts film to be made by a major Hollywood studio. But just days
before the film was released in July 1973, Lee died from a brain swelling.
