Selina has contributed to the governance and operational monitoring in a special way because of her qualifications and experiences as a medical practitioner. This has been of great benefit on our continuous path to excellence as we further enhance and develope our clinical risk management processes and reporting. Selina’s insights into the human psyche has provided us with understanding of complex situations involving both resident care as well as human resource management, and her gentle and compassionate Message from the CEO Kevin Bertram Christmas – a time to celebrate and count our blesssings At this time of the year Christians celebrate the birth of Christ and the joy, hope, peace and salvation that accompanies these celebrations. To others from different religions and cultures it is a time of reverence and peace and goodwill, as it is on their holy days. Christmas is that special time of the year when families and friends get together and share some special things, such as a good meal, gifts and treasured memories. It is a time when we celebrate what we have in common rather than what separates us – here 4 Graham Hill, OAM holistic approach to problem solving has been something we would all wish to emulate. We have all learned many things from Selina and we thank her for her commitment and achievements here at Shepparton Villages. I am sure I speak for all Board Members and executive staff when I say that it has been an absolute pleasure to serve on the same Board as Selina who brought many treasures and talents to the organisation and became a good friend to us all. at Shepparton Villages we are no different in that we recognise the joy and meaning of relationships and look to the good in everyone. It is also important that we recognise how fortunate we are in Australia compared to people in many other countries. All around the globe we see people who live in great poverty; people whose human rights are abused on a daily basis; people torn apart from war and violence, people who are imprisoned and tortured because of their beliefs; the multitudes who suffer from sickness and lack of basic needs such as food, water and shelter; people who have no access to education and people whose dignity has been abused and trodden on. Whatever our background and beliefs we should all stop and think how well we have it in Shepparton, Victoria, Australia and give thanks that we are so blessed compared to millions and millions of others. We enjoy what www.sheppvillages.com.au Well done & Thank You Selina Dr Selina Quilty we have because of the freedom our democracy brings, because of the policies of our government in supporting our society, because of the richness of our resources and because of the hard work of our forefathers. Respect and dignity and a fair go are part of this picture and none of these gifts should be taken for granted because they didn’t just happen by accident. Our Board in setting our mission to enrich the lives of people in our care, in setting our values of respect, dignity, empathy, integrity and compassion, in managing our activities and in setting our strategic plans in its own real way contributes to this bigger picture. So, from our Board of Management lead by Stephen Merrylees as President and Merushe Asim as Vice President, from our staff and volunteers I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year. Villages Stories ...photos from the AGM The 2013 Annual General Meeting was held in October with retiring President Selina Quilty acknowledging the year’s events and thanking her fellow Board Members for their support throughout her term as President. We welcomed two new Life Members in 2013 - Bruce Lloyd, AM and Jeanette Ryan. Bruce has been a strong and generous supporter of Shepparton Villages for over 40 years and joined the Board of Management in 2008 and retired in 2012. Bruce was of great assistance to the organisation through his many connections with various Philanthropic and Trusts and Foundations and his personal contacts with key business leaders. Jeanette joined Shepparton Villages as a Board Member in 1997 and in early 1998 took on the full time position of Executive Manager Care Services for 15 years before she retired in 2012. Jeanette’s leadership to the organisation is described as revolutionary; she lead by example and set and maintained high clinical and professional standards. They are both worthy recipients of Life Membership. Harry designed and built a table top easel for his wife, Ada, who is a resident in Acacia House, to display a very special album on Ada’s life history. This easel was loaned for a painting class and from there orders started to come in from all of the facilities. Acacia House now has10 easels. Harry works from the Shepparton Villages Men’s Shed and with the help of the residents and other volunteers to share the workload, the easels will soon be in use in all the facilities. Harry Brittain & Isabel Hill When the easel is not being used in a painting class it has assisted those with difficulties holding and turning pages of a newspaper or book, giving some independence back to the resident. We think Harry will be kept busy for some time! WHY DONT YOU JOIN US & BE A VOLUNTEER?
