SYLLABUS: Latin II Tutor: Mrs. Beth Harvey Meets: Tuesdays/ Thursdays 11:30am - 12:50pm ET Cost: $ 580/ year Textbooks: Latin for the New Millennium by Minkova & Tunberg - Level 1 Textbook & Student Workbook; The LNM Level 2 Textbook and Student Workbook will be needed by December. Fall Semester is from September 6 - December 15, 2016. Winter Semester is from January 3 May 25, 2017. Prerequisite: The student must have studied the first sixteen chapters of LNM Level 1; it covers the concepts of Latin in a much different order than most Latin I texts do. Description: This course is a study of Latin for the New Millenium: Level 1 and part of Level 2. We will finish up Chapters 17-21 of the Level 1 text. We then move into the Level 2 Book covering circa two chapters per month. Students will have access to recordings of the sessions throughout the year, so if you are absent or simply wish to review a session, you can just click on the link and view the recorded session later. I am always available for questions outside of class. The student will have two assignments per week, which will be promptly graded and returned with many helpful notes regarding any mistakes they make. Live Sessions: Students are expected to be at their computers with the proper materials before the online session begins. If there is a pattern of entering late or not being ready for the class, a student’s participation grade will suffer. In the online session, part of the time will be a presentation of material, but most of the time you will be actively participating. You will be able to come to the board to translate sentences together, and will be able to ask questions, etc. The students will get to know each other as they discuss together what they have been learning. Grading: 33% Homework, Translations, Class Participation 33% Quizzes – Regular online quizzes will test the students on vocabulary, plus (occasionally) verb formations and translations. 33% Tests – There will be about 5-6 tests. Quizzes: Short vocabulary/grammar quizzes will take place roughly two or three times a month. They may cover any words or endings learned in the previous week or two. Because quizzes will be frequent and often dedicated to only one topic, proper drill and practice will drastically improve your grade, but neglect of that will be disastrous. Homework: Your homework assignments will be posted on our course Moodle site. You will have instructions on what you do for independent study and also specific assignments “to turn in.” These assignments are to be turned in for grading, but please remember that in order to do well in this subject, you must do more than simply turn in those assignments and show up for class. You should study the chapters, practice conjugating verbs, practice declinging nouns, and master the vocabulary. By your performance on regular quizzes and this homework, we will be able to tell whether you are keeping up with your independent work.
