OUR MISSION
The North Philadelphia Arts and Culture Alliance is dedicated to
promoting the diverse arts and culture organizations of North
Philadelphia and establishing this district as a destination for cultural,
visual and performing arts. We strive to inspire professional,
organizational and cross-cultural collaboration and exchange, and to
promote awareness of our resources to the surrounding community
and beyond through accessible literature, programs and events.
TREASURES OF NORTH PHILLY OPEN HOUSE
An Open House is being planned for Saturday,
April 25, 2009. This will be our introduction to
the community to let everyone know what we
have to offer. Many of the alliance members will
have special events lined up especially for this
weekend. Some of the exciting events are listed
at the right. Additionally, a website is currently
under construction at www.northphillyarts.org.
We hope this will provide a one-stop site for you
to learn about all the great and exciting events
happening in this district.
OUR LOCATION
The North Philadelphia Arts and Culture Alliance
extends from Spring Garden Street to Lehigh Avenue
with North Broad Street as its core. See the next few
pages for a list of Alliance Members along with their
street addresses, phone numbers and websites.
We’ve also highlighted a few members to give
everyone a better idea of who we are and what we
have to offer. We hope to feature additional
members in future newsletters.
----------------------------------------------------------------------The North Philadelphia Arts and Culture Alliance is
supported in part by the Samuel S. Fels Foundation
and with ongoing support from Temple University.

Philadelphia Doll Museum
The Mission of the Philadelphia Doll Museum is
 To preserve doll history and culture by presenting the
art of doll making and collecting through seminars and
lectures.
 To provide a resource library of information for doll
research and the documentation of printed material, photographs, and
audio/video recordings.
 To develop and sponsor with other museums, cultural centers and
organizations exhibits, exchanges, and educational workshops.
Paul Green School of Rock Music
The belief at Paul Green School of Rock Music is
that the best way to learn to do almost anything is
by doing it and that this is particularly true about
learning to play music. The goals at the Paul
Green School of Rock Music are: to help students
realize their potential as artists, to put them on
stage in front of as many people as possible and
to help foster a new generation of incredible musicians.
Temple Gallery, Tyler School of Art
The mission of Temple Gallery and our department of
Exhibitions and Public Programs at Tyler School of Art,
is to explore and encourage experimentation in artistic
practice and interpretation. Temple Gallery provides a
platform for young artists, curators and critics to produce
and present their work and a forum for the larger
Philadelphia community to examine the most recent developments in
contemporary art and their relationships to broader cultural contexts. The
Gallery’s programming is designed to engage an array of participants and
audiences in an ongoing conversation about the current, constantly evolving
circumstances of art, artists and artmaking.
Tree House Books
Tree House Books is growing and sustaining a community of
readers, writers, and thinkers in North Central Philadelphia
through a core of programs that include after-school Tutoring
Time, Wednesday evening Magazine Project, Community
Discussions and arts events, and Junior Staff Leadership
Program for adolescents. Tree House Books is viewed in the community as an
established institution for not only books but also programs for kids, a venue for
local artists and events and programs for the whole family.
Cerulean Arts Gallery & Studio
Cerulean Arts strives to cultivate an appreciation for art
by holding exhibitions, offering unique decorative and
fine art for sale and providing art instruction for personal
fulfillment. Every six weeks we invite a new individual or
group of artists to show their art in the front gallery
space. The Opening Receptions and Gallery Talks give
people a chance to meet the artist and learn about their work. In the back
gallery we offer handmade jewelry, vases and other gifts made by both local
artists as well as Fair Trade organizations. Additionally, we provide art
classes in drawing and painting for all levels.

Village of Arts and Humanities
The Village of Arts and Humanities' mission is to build community
through innovative arts, educational, social, construction, and
economic and youth development programs. In all of its projects and
activities, the Village seeks to do justice to the humanity and social
conditions of people who live in inner city North Philadelphia and in
similar urban communities. The Village’s primary programs are in
park building, education, performance and exhibition and renovation.
Wagner Free Institute of Science
The Wagner Free Institute of Science is an educational
institution and natural history museum dedicated to providing
free education in science. Incorporated in 1855 by Philadelphia
merchant and gentleman scientist, William Wagner, the Institute
maintains nationally important museum and library collections
that were assembled to teach science to the public. Its free
public education courses on science, now in their 154th year,
are the oldest program devoted to free adult education in the
United States. The Institute's three-story exhibit hall houses an
extraordinary collection of natural history specimens.
Mural Arts Program
As a public art program serving the City of Philadelphia,
the Mural Arts Program works in partnership with
communities, grassroots organizations, city agencies,
schools & philanthropies to achieve the following goals:
 Develop sustainable partnerships with community organizations in order to
create murals that reflect the community's culture, history and vision
 Catalyze community development, neighborhood activism, and civic pride
 Foster youth development through experiential art education and mentorship
 Support artists and artisans in sharing their talents and experiences with youth
 Use the power of art and the mural design process as tools for community
engagement, blight remediation, beautification and demonstration of civic
pride, and prevention and rehabilitation of crime.
Art Sanctuary
Art Sanctuary uses the power of black art to transform
individuals, unite groups of people, and enrich and draw
inspiration from the inner city. We invite established and
aspiring artists to help create excellent lectures,
performances, and educational programs.
Beech Companies
Since 1990, Beech Companies has successfully carried out its mission to
revitalize the Cecil B. Moore community, to promote community empowerment,
neighborhood revitalization, entrepreneurship, and to advocate the need for
housing rehabilitation and homeownership.
The Arts Garage
The Arts Garage, or TAG, is a literary and contemporary
performance venue for budding and emerging artists. The
venue lends itself to artists across music, dance, spoken
word, animation, video gamers, fashion, engineering/architecture, designs/
installations, comedy, theater, catharsis, film, and a host of other audio and
visual performance & design installations. TAG encourages a fusion of
tradition and innovation, bridging the intersection between multimedia – audio,
visual, video and design technology.
