Chess Spoken Here
The University of Texas at Dallas takes chess seriously. We believe that chess requires the
kind of mental toughness and competitive excellence characteristic of our students.
If you like chess and are looking for a college, we would like to hear from you.
Julio Catalino C. Sadorra
Puchen Wang
“The best thing about the UT Dallas Chess Program
is its desire to see its players excel in both chess and
academics. Its provision for playing opportunities
and training resources is an integral part of this.”
“UT Dallas’ reputation as a strong academic
institution and the winning reputation of the chess
team are what attracted me to the University.”
“While I was researching colleges, I was determined
to play chess for a winning university team, so
playing for the UT Dallas Chess Team was not
something I had to deliberate. The team has a
proven record and potential to win several titles
every year, due to the program’s training regimen
and dedication of the players.”
“As a freshman international student, being part
of the team helped me acclimate to the new
environment in my first semester. My teammates
gave me valuable company and academic tips.
The University offers a friendly, but serious and
challenging academic atmosphere.”
“Recruiting international student players is essential
because it not only gives the team a unique dynamic
of varied cultures and playing styles, but it also
enriches the knowledge and cultural appreciation of
every player on the team.”
Julio Catalino C. Sadorra, a junior applied
mathematics major, is an international student from
Singapore, where he and his family moved from
Cavite, Philippines. He enjoys reading chess books,
watching British sitcoms and playing table tennis and
basketball. Julio has a FIDE rating of 2498 and in
June 2011 received the title of Grandmaster (GM).
“Being part of the UT Dallas Chess Team
has taught me the value of teamwork and
responsibility. In two of the most important
tournaments we play, the Pan American
Championship and the Final Four of Chess
tournament, it’s all about how the team works
together to achieve the best results possible.”
“The best thing about the chess team is the
opportunity for travel. We often have the chance to
play in places we have never been to before, like last
October when the team was fortunate enough to
travel to Cuba for an exhibition match.”
“At UT Dallas, students are able to choose courses
to suit their academic goals, join a variety of student
organizations and play chess for a formidable team
at an institution where they are given the liberty to
be themselves, pursue their interests and develop
their talents.”
Puchen Wang, a junior finance and actuarial
science double major originally from Shanghai,
China, moved to New Zealand with his family in
1997. He is a member of the Management Honors
Program, the Financial Leaders Association and
the Collegium V honors program. In his spare
time, Puchen enjoys tennis, pool and table tennis.
He has a FIDE rating of 2437 and holds the title of
International Master (IM). Pictured above with

The UT Dallas Chess Team
The team has won state, national and international titles and represents the University in
the Pan-American Intercollegiate Championship, the Texas Collegiate Championship, the
National Collegiate Chess League team championship and the Final Four of Chess.
The team competes internationally in annual Internet matches with the University of
Belgrade for The Transatlantic Cup.
Members of the UT Dallas chess team receive:
Scholarships: UT Dallas offers several chess scholarships to qualified student-players. We
welcome candidates who are excellent students, strong chess competitors and will contribute to
the UT Dallas Chess Program.
Coaching: The University employs International Master Rade Milovanovic, Co-Champion of
the 2008 U.S. Open, as the team’s coach.
Summer Training: The University provides opportunities for travel to tournaments on an
individual basis to strengthen playing skills over the summer semester.
Institutional Support: The University administration has given strong support to the program
since its inception. Unlike many American universities, we don’t have a football team!
Our chess players are supported by the student body, faculty and administrators for the positive
attention they bring to the University through tournament wins and individual recognitions.
