Second-level consumer Carnivores or omnivore that eat first level consumers (herbivores).
Producer An organism that can make its own food through capturing the sunlight
Release oxygen as a product of photosynthesis
Nitrogen Cycle
Nitrogen Fixation
Producers use carbon to produce other carboncontaining molecules
Bacteria that changes nitrogen gas into a usable form
Carbon Cycle
Biome
A circular model displaying how carbon dioxide is produced/released
A group of land ecosystems with similar climates and organisms
Freshwater ecosystems Bodies of water that contain freshwater; ex. Ponds and rivers
Intertidal zone Where the high and low tides occur in the ocean
Food web
Decomposers
Many overlapping food chains in the ecosystem
Break down remains of organisms and waste
Permafrost
Condensation
Soil that is frozen all year in the tundra
Water vapor that turns into droplets of liquid water
Water turning to gas; ex. Boiling water Evaporation

Essay Questions
• Briefly describe the steps in the water cycle.
• Explain why decomposers are essential to life on Earth.
