June 2015 Good Samaritan Newsletter HIKARI Welcome to our June Hikari! For the month of June, it means change - change for young people graduating from school, change in terms of travel to parts of the world for the first time for some and relaxation for others, and change because we are now at the half way mark of 2015 and it is a time for us to imagine and think of Good Samaritan Church and its ministry in a new way. Bishop's Committee minutes of 4/19/15 1. A leak had been found under the floor of the vicarage caused by an inability to shut the valve. Board of Water Supply was called to repair the valve. Hopefully, the church will receive credit for this. 2.Any change to the church will come under the direction of the Bishop who will meet first with the Bishop's Committee. 3. Outreach Committee of Epiphany Church has invited Good Samaritan to participate in their monthly meetings. 4. June 13, 2015 was set as clean-up day to clean and de-clutter pavilion, office, and church office storage. 5. Firefighters came for annual inspection of the Preschool and asked to see the chapel. They noted the lit candle, a no-no regarding fire and safety rules. Georgenette Kam extinguished the candle. Father Kennedy will look into other ways to have the candle lit. 6. For the Hikari, various ministries should be posted 2 months in advance. Eucharistic Ministry will be added. 7. Church Management tool for the computer will be upgraded. Page 2 TRIP OF A LIFETIME BY ANDREE IKEZAWA FALLAS, granddaughter of The Rev. Benjamin Shuntaro Ikezawa., first priest of Good Samaritan Church. Researching my family history had been in my mind for years. Hints of connections to the Taira clan from a scroll my uncle, Nathaniel Shiro Ikezawa gave me in 1984 when my dad passed was a bittersweet gift and great inspiration to explore possibilities. The scroll dated back to the 1700's and links to the 700's to Taira no Munemori and his son, Taira no Kiyomori. Andree traveled with her aunt, Sherry Ikezawa, widow of Michael Ikezawa, youngest son of Rev. Benjamin Ikezawa. In Kyoto, they visited Nyakuoji Shrine near her grandfather's gravesite. They also walked to Kawaramachi Gojo where there was a church, Kyotosei no Kyokai where her dad, Andrew was born. In Nara, they saw the Anglican church near the Kintetsu Nara Station where her grandfather worked. Today it is surrounded by a shopping and restaurant arcade. In Osaka contact was made with the Kawaguchi Church where her grandfather's portrait was displayed on the third floor. This was where her uncle Mike was born. Thank you to Andree Fallas for this history. Please forgive the editing of your report by me, Myrtle Kaneshiro, Page 3 Trenton, Taylor, and Melissa‟s Confirmation on May 17, 2015 at The Cathedral of St. Andrews. Photo‟s by Fr.
