Jack,
Tommy Warbington was kind enough to send this to
me. As I mentioned this fable hung in the coffee area at
Apex Supply on Button Gwinnett Drive for over 25 years.
Leonard Rodbell referred to it often when the so called
experts would tell us the economy was bad. If you look
closely in the bottom right hand corner it says that this
fable appeared in American Metal Market January 15, 1958.

Guest Editorial
By Andrew B. Ward
The State of Tennessee
has a problem. We, as a
State, use more than our
fair share of energy to heat
our water, light, heat and
cool our homes and businesses compared to our
neighboring states.
Tennessee’s Governor,
Phil Bredsen to his credit,
is trying to do something
about that sad figure. The
Governor has commissioned an energy task
force to look into trying to
find solutions to these energy use problems.
The task force is broken
down into working groups,
one of which deals with
residential energy issues.
Invited to speak before
these working groups are
architects, engineers, technology companies, utilities,
environmentalist, and even
plumbing and HVAC contractors.
I along with other contractors spoke and answered questions posed to
us from the working group.
The task force wanted to
know how to make homes
more energy efficient and
how to change attitudes
about energy use by Tennesseans.
Many great ideas were
shared and great questions
asked in this effort by the
moderator and panel. Of
those ideas, many pertain
to our trade.
Geothermal got a fair
share of mentions. Asked
about why more people re
not going toward geothermal, most agreed it was initial cost and misunderstanding about the application.
All of it broke down into
a few problems with retrofitting older homes with energy saving systems,
upfront cost, incentives
and a lack of knowledge.
Most of the buying public
have no idea how long it
will take to pay out one of
these units with savings.
There is not much in the
way of a cost / payback
comparison with the higher
energy cost.
The lack of knowledge
of this and what is even out
there for homeowners to install, most agreed keeps
the market small.
Along with these issues,
the lack of incentive money
or t ax credits keeps
homeowners from being rewarded for spending extra
upfront money. Back in the
70’s, the heyday of solar
water heaters, TVA incentives drove the market on
mos t all of t hose purchases. We need tax and
utility credits to encourage
homeowners to purchase
more expensive equipment.
The lack of suppliers
carrying solar water heating systems and a lack of
trained installers was a
subject that was fleshed
out. Tankless water heaters was another subject.
The tankless and other
high efficient water heating
system benefits need to be
promoted
more
so
homeowners are more informed of their energy savings and as such, how they
save money.
And something I was not
aware of is the problems
for electric utilities when
electric tankless water
heaters are in their grid.
Apparently, the utilities
lines and transformers will
not handle many of these
on a street because of
peak load and the extra
power these units use.
These ideas were part
of the retro-fit discussion.
The working group also
wanted to know what the
participants’ thoughts were
on how to get builders and
t heir clients to build
greener homes.
One of the things that
was given a fair amount of
attention was the fact that
codes inspections were not
state wide but spotty at
best.
I think the task force is
starting to see what the
lack of codes enforcement
and licensed contractors
can cost. It effects the use
of energy as well as public
safety. The cost of fuel is
driving us all to smaller
cars. The cost of the energy our homes and businesses use and the water
we waste will drive us all
towards these new technologies.
Are you ready? Have
you learned how to install
the latest energy saving
systems, tankless water
heaters, geothermal HVAC
Page 5A
units. Do you know how to
save your customer s
money on their water bills
and protect our limited
water resources. You had
better be ready because its
coming. You can watch
from the sidelines or you
can be a player and help
solve a growing problem.
All of the plumbing ven-
dors need to gear up as
well.
Educate us on your
product lines that save energy and water. Start looking into solar water heating, no one is carrying solar yet, we need to gear up
with solar. Then all of need
to keep on our legislators
to strengthen codes and li-
cense enforcement here in
the State of Tennessee to
keep professionals at work
solving these energy and
water issues.
Professional plumbing
contractors and suppliers can
be a big part of solving the
energy issues. We are on the
front lines, and we can be a
front line player. Get ready!6

Stanley VIRAX Launches World-Class
Hand-Held Pressing Machines
Launched June 7, 2008 at
the 33rd annual Southern
California Plumbing, Heating
and Cooling Industry Trade
Show, Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, Calif., these hand-held devices
represent a reasonably
priced, high-performance alternative to conventional copper tube and PEX joining
methodologies. They further
signify the official entry of the
Stanley Industrial Tools Group
into the U.S. plumbing and
pipe trades segment, according to Don McIlnay, president
of Stanley Industrial Tools and
corporate vice president, The
Stanley Works.
"The M20+ and P20+ are
designed for commercial, industrial and institutional applications, especially compli-
cated and stressful jobsite
conditions," he explained. "Together, they represent the first
of what will become a comprehensive line of reliable,
efficient, world-class Stanley
VIRAX plumbing and pipe fitting tools."
He added, "It’s important
to note, these are not crossover Stanley products; they
are designed specifically for
the professional plumber and
mechanical contractor."
As described by Alan English, product manager for the
brand launch, the Stanley
VIRAX M20+ is a compact
pistol grip pressing machine
the size of a cordless drill.
Designed to crimp half-inch
to one-inch copper and 3/8inch to one-inch PEX tubing,
it features a master jaw configuration with interchangeable inserts – the first of its
kind in the United States – to
accommodate various tube
sizes. This revolutionary concept allows for quick, easy
change out without the need
to carry multiple jaws. Further,
New HOBO® LEED
Monitoring Kits
Onset Computer Corporation, the “HOBO” data logger company, today announced three new HOBO
LEED Monitoring Kits designed to help improve
building energy performance while generating
credits as specified in the
U.S. Green Building
Council’s LEED for Existing
Buildings Rating System.
Specifically, the new kits
enable facility managers,
building owners, contractors
and engineers to quickly
and easily measure and
document the following:
· Boiler/solar hot water
heater performance
· Rooftop HVAC system
efficiency
· Indoor Environmental
Quality
“The ability to accurately
measure and document systems performance in existing buildings has become
an increasingly important
aspect of the LEED-EB accreditation process,” said
Frank Deshaies, product
marketing manager for Onset. “At the same time,
people need continuouslyrecorded baseline data to
understand how, for example, an HVAC unit is performing over time in order to
make energy improvements.
The new HOBO LEED Monitoring Kits are extremely af-
it reduces the tool’s overall
weight – which, at just over
10 pounds, is already the
lightest in its class. The unit
also boasts a four-second
cycle time: the industry’s fastest. Additional features include a 180- degree rotating
head for ease of operation; an
electro-mechanical drive
mechanism for reduced maintenance; and a lithium-ion
battery that fully recharges in
30 minutes while providing a
45 percent improvement in
the number of cycles over
competitive products. The
P20+, also a pistol grip pressing tool, provides a copper
crimping capacity of half an
inch to two inches. Featuring
a 360-degree rotating head
for optimal reach and efficiency, its narrow profile
makes it ideal for tight spaces.
The P20+ is a battery-operated, electro-hydraulic unit
with variable speed advance
trigger. Its fully galvanized
jaws resist rust and corrosion,
and are held securely in place
by a mechanical locking pin.
fordable, easy-to-use solutions that address both of
these needs.”
HOBO LEED Monitoring
Kits are available in three
versions: a Boiler Monitoring Kit; a Rooftop HVAC System Monitoring Kit; and an
Indoor Environmental Quality Monitoring Kit. Each kit
includes HOBO data logger
hardware, HOBOware® Lite
graphing and analysis software, and associated sensors.
The HOBO LEED Monitoring Kits are available immediately from Onset, and
can be customized and purchased on the company’s
website
at
http://
www.onsetcomp.com/LEED.
Onset is a world leader
in portable data logging and
monitoring solutions based
on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The company’s HOBO
data logger and weather station products are used
around the world in a broad
range of monitoring applications, from verifying the performance of green buildings
and renewable energy systems to agricultural and
coastal research. Onset has
sold more than one million
data loggers since the
company’s founding in
1981.6
The P20+ works with the
XL and XL-C large diameter
systems from VIEGA® and
Elkhart Products Corporation
for applications requiring 2.5inch to four-inch copper and
bronze fittings.
"Compared to traditional
soldering and brazing methods, our new Stanley VIRAX
machines are significantly
more economical and efficient," stated English. "Residual fluid in the pipes is no
longer an issue, since the
technology relies on crimping
rather than heated liquid ferrous joints. For the same reason, applications are 100 percent leak free, guaranteed for
50 years. Plus, the safety and
insurance concerns associated with an open flame and
high-temperature soldering
and brazing materials are
non-existent; hence, the M20+
and P20+ reduce the risk of
accidents and can be used
without a burn permit. Finally,
the machines require little
training to successfully operate, meaning the learning
curve is essentially flat.
"Consequently, the time
and labor savings are phenomenal."
Moreover, the two ma-
chines are compatible with the
industry’s leading fitting systems, including Elkhart Products Corporation XPress®, the
VIEGA® ProPress® System
and NIBCO Press System®.
"Stanley is working directly
with these premier fitting manufacturers to ensure our tools
meet their stringent specifications," reported English.
"We’ve performed extensive
testing in the U.S. during the
last year, exposing the M20+
and P20+ to skilled plumbing
and mechanical industry professionals in a variety of commercial and industrial environments. Both have proven to
be very dependable and
amazingly fast."
Technology for the two
systems is supplied by
French tool manufacturer,
VIRAX, acquired by Stanley in
2006. A proven entity in the
European plumbing market
since 1920, VIRAX provides
the Stanley Industrial Tools
Group with the "presence,
product expertise and credibility necessary to successfully enter the U.S. marketplace," concluded McIlnay.

“PROMOTEC” the patented Swiss pipe restoration
system is being introduced in the USA.
It uses wet, pulsating aluminum oxide to completely
clean the interior of old water pipes and causes no
damage to thin or worn pipes.
Other systems use dry, abrasive sandblasting material, usable only for a short time. The sand makes
holes in thin areas and pipe bends and many blind
areas remain unclean. This prevents the epoxy from
adhering solidly to the interior pipes.
The PROMOTEC system provides a patented thorough wet cleaning process in both directions to completely clean the interior of the pipes without any time
limit or damage!
The PROMOTEC system flushes the removed residue down the drain whereas the dry sand of other systems has to be carted away to a disposal facility.
Give old pipes a new life- use PROMOTEC
a
name you can trust. Licenses for some states are still
available.

Remembering a Friend
Ron Hicks
On the morning of October 14th we all were saddened
to learn that our dear friend
Ron Hicks had passed away.
For those of you who weren’t
aware, Ron had been diagnosed with colon cancer earlier this year. Ron was a private man and when asked if
we could share some information in the Hotline about his
battle with cancer, he would
always answer “let’s wait a
little bit until we know more
what the game plan is”. He
and his wife Bobbi were always grateful for the thoughts,
prayers and cards he received from you.
Like many of you who
knew Ron Hicks well, you
knew he was a good man, a
man of integrity, and a man
who cared deeply about the
industry. Ron had been in in-
volved in the plumbing industry for over 40 years. So just
about everybody knew him or
knew he was the guy that
could answer the tough questions. He was “a voice of reason” down at the City of Atlanta and was affectionately
referred to as “the old grey
headed guy.”
When I first started working with PMA back in 2002,
one of my jobs was to schedule Ron to speak at the local
area meetings around the
state. Coming from a banking background, I really didn’t
understand what CE credits
were nor codes or plumbing
amendments. I also had had
very limited dealing with any
true southerners so little did I
know I was in for a real treat
when we started working together. Ron had a very dry
sense of humor that I didn’t
understand that in the beginning. In conversation, he
would often respond to me
with phrases like “Even a
blind hog finds an acorn now
and then”, “Don’t get your
feathers ruffled” and it’s just
“gobbledeegook”. As the
years went by I actually could
figure out pretty much anything he threw my way. We
always had a good laugh.
Page 11A
Ron had a teacher’s heart
and loved to share what he
knew. When I began actively
answering all of PMA’s phone
calls, there were times I didn’t
have a clue what members
were asking me. I would say
let me research that question
and get back to you, then I
would pick up the phone and
call Ron. Ron would patiently
answer the numerous questions I asked. Then he began to teach me where I could
find the answers in the code
books or amendments. The
day I was able to tell someone what the height requirement was for a toilet seat according to ADA standards
was thrilling.
He was the
only person who was able to
celebrate that triumphant
moment with me. For as long
as anyone can remember Ron
was the lead instructor for
PMA’s Plumbing Review
Course. The first time someone asked me if they would
learn how to pass the test (like
another school promised)
Ron told me, tell them “we’ll
teach them how to be a better plumber so then they
should be able pass the test.”
It would be interesting to know
exactly how many licensed
plumbers there are in Georgia that could credit Ron’s
training to their passing the
plumbing exam. I would
guess the number to be in the
hundreds. It should be noted
that Ron also taught over the
years at other technical
schools, PMA was just one of
the lucky beneficiaries of his
talent. Every November on
Remembrance Day, a holiday
for city employees, Ron and I
would meet for lunch to plan
PMA’s education courses for
the following year. With this
day fast approaching, I can’t
think of a better day for all of
us to remember the contributions Ron and the other industry friends we’ve lost made to
the industry. To say he will
be greatly missed is an
understatement.6
Basco Introduces AquaGlide
With the introduction of
Basco’s new AquaGlide™
protective coating system,
you can “take it easy” when it
comes to cleaning your
Basco shower enclosure.
Applied at Basco’s factory before you even see or use your
door, AquaGlide helps prevent hard water spots and
mineral deposits from forming on the glass, and seals
and protects it from soap
scum and spotting. Water
simply beads on the glass
and rolls away.
Day-to-day maintenance is
a breeze - just spray or rinse
the glass with water after you
shower and you’re done! The
continued effectiveness of
AquaGlide depends on a variety of factors including the
frequency of the shower’s use
and the make-up of the water.
Homeowners who already
have a Basco shower enclo-
sure can keep it looking
“showroom perfect,” by using
the AquaGlide home kit. Safe
and easy to apply at home,
the kit includes AquaGlide
Stain Remover for removing
existing hard water and soap
scum stains, and AquaGlide
Revitalizer that can revitalize
an already treated door or
can be used to apply its firstever protective coating. The
multi-step application process only takes a few minutes.
Simply clean the door
with the hard water stain
remover and scrungee,
spray on the revitalizer and
wipe it down with the chamois cloth. Once applied,
soap film runs off the door
and down the drain minimizing spots on your shower
enclosure. The kit retails for
$49.95 at your local Basco
showroom or at www.

Message
Ron Kikta
Some time ago I was out
and about doing my plumbing thing when I ran into a
contractor I had done business with about 10 years
ago. As we reminisced, he
told how he always enjoyed
our work and appreciated
the fact that we gave him fair
prices.
This got me
wondering…….why is it we
are not still doing work for

Center in Atlanta.
Reflective of the trend
toward cleaner building and
environmentally conscious
construction, the 2008 show
highlighted the growing demand in renewable energies. Thousands of contractors, wholesalers, manufacturers’ reps and other attendees were able to see the
latest product innovations
from leading manufacturers
in the exhibit hall, learn from
industry leaders at the seminar program and network
with peers during the many
special events at the show.
“While the current economic downturn has impacted the industry, exhibitors and visitors remained
upbeat about their future
business development and
strategies,” said Daniel
McKinnon, executive vice
president of Messe Frankfurt, the show’s organizer.
“ISH North America continues to provide a unique experience through the show’s
variety and quality of exhibiting companies, new and
innovative products, strong
industry partnerships and
endorsers, as well as extensive technical training, educational opportunities and
featured product show cases.”
As the only consolidated
show in the industry, exhibi-
him? After all, he was still
working in the Metro area,
but for some reason I had
slipped off of his bid list. I
quickly remedied that by
handing him one of our fact
sheets that contained our
company’s information.
Again, this made me
wonder......how many other
lists has my company fallen
off of?
I try to keep in touch with
those contractors I have
done work for. In the past I
have sent Christmas cards
to all of my contractors and
during the year I mail out a
fact sheet to contractors
with the purpose of keeping
my company name fresh in
their minds. The system I’m
using obviously isn’t foolproof. The feedback I’ve
received is that some contractors are no longer in my
working area or are no
longer in business. With the
economy the way it is right
now, I have made it a point
to follow up on my bids with
a phone call or fax to let
them know I am interested
and willing to help them get
their project done properly.
Also I want to be considered
for future bids.
Follow up must be done
in hard times (like these) as
well as in the good times
even when we’re all too
busy. We all know it is
easier to keep an existing
customer than it is to find a
new one. We must not let
any of these contacts slip
through the cracks! You
may wonder sometimes why
you never got the job and
more often than not, the job
will go to the lowest bidder.
That’s just the business
we’re in. Try not to take it
personally.
My point is this: Stay in
touch with people, let them
tors were excited to connect
with a broad range of professionals, from contractors
and wholesalers, to builders,
manufacturers’ reps and
others. “I am glad that our
industr y has one major
show, and this is it,” said
Andre Bergeron of M.A.
Stewart & Sons Ltd. In addition, an impressive design
and show floor layout was
highly regarded by exhibitors and attendees alike. As
Rob Zurita of Hubbard Enterprises/HOLDRITE® noted,
“ISH North America was a
great show – easily accessible and well-organized.”
The ISH North America
Seminar Program featured a
diverse selection of educational opportunities. Popular
business-oriented programs
included Kirk Alter’s “Recession-Proofing Your Business,” which focused on
making the right moves in
tough times; and Adams
Hudson’s “How to Put High
Performance Plumbing Marketing in Your Company Instantly,” which offered tips
and tools for results-oriented marketing.
Green technologies were
covered in “Two Real Sharp
P’s in a Bright Green Pod,”
presented by Dave Yates
and Mark Eatherton, the
only two recipients of the
Carlson-Holohan Industry
Award of Excellence; and
“Ten Trends That Will Shape
the Future of Hydronic Heat-
ing” with John Siegenthaler,
which explored new hardware and design concepts
keeping hydronics at the
cutting edge of energy efficiency.
Special events included
the 2008 Plumbing Apprentice Contest, held on the ISH
North America exhibit floor
in conjunction with the
Plumbing-Heating-Cooling
Contractors Association’s
(PHCC) annual convention.
The winner of the contest
was Kyle Holcomb of Pasadena Plumbing in St. Petersburg, Fla., a fourth-year apprentice.
ISH North America ran
concurrently with “Network,”
the annual convention for
the American Supply Association (ASA) and PHCC.
Other association events included the annual convention for the International Association of Plumbing and
Mechanical
Of ficials
(IAPMO) and the Canadian
Institute of Plumbing and
Heating’s famous Maple
Leaf Reception.
“Looking forward, we
anticipate a solid return of
the innovation and productivity that has made this industry so strong in the past,”
McKinnon said. “We are
confident that ISH North
America 2010 will continue
to provide exciting new opportunities and a proven
business platform for both
attendees and exhibitors.”6
know you are still in the
plumbing business. You
never know where conversations like this may lead.
Also, talk to your fellow PMA
members. These are your
peers; they can offer ideas
and suggestions as to what
works and doesn’t work.
Really listen to them (but
only the smart ones).
On a serious note, the
plumbing industry has lost
a couple of fine people. Not
only will they be missed by
their families, but they will be
missed by all of us in the
business. Let us always remember them. Also, November 11th is Veteran’s Day.
Please make sure you thank

have made. No matter what
you have been told in the
past, everything that you are
able to do today… a Veteran

Joe the Plumber?
With all the “Joe the

“First of all, plumbers are
proud of the important role
they provide in protecting
the health and safety of the
public,” said PHCC National
President Joe Schmitt.
“The majority of plumbers
today are professional, educated owners of small businesses that provide a significant number of jobs
throughout the country and
stimulate economic growth.
They truly are the backbone
of the American economy.”

Regulation and Innovation Couple to
Spark Strides toward Sustainability in
the Home and Building Industry
By Lyndsey Forster and Shannon Benton
The landscape of
America is changing, and
surprisingly, this shift has
occurred for reasons other
than the political election
and the ongoing economic
downturn. Major modifications in our nation’s building codes have altered the
way homes, multi-family residences and communities
are being specified, designed and constructed.
This is a national paradigm
shift that supports sustainable building practices; a
move that is imperative to
quality
of
life.
GreenPlumbers USA recently reported that our
nation’s economy and the
well-being of the environment depend in large part
upon energy and water resources used in our homes
and commercial buildings.
The financial experts agree,
with The Financial Times
stating that the building of
sustainable homes will yield
excellent financial gains for
those homeowners who take
the leap,.
“Although it’s still a small
part of the overall market,
green homebuilding has
risen 50 percent since
2004”, according to the National Association of Home
Builders (NAHB). Continued
substantial increases in this
building category can be
expected as energy costs
soar and our water sources
become increasingly depleted. McGraw-Hill Construction, a research leader
in the industry investigated
and determined that this
sector of the housing market can expect to see ample
growth – doubling by 2012
– and be worth an estimated
$40 - $70 billion. At least this
is some good news for those
in the housing industry who
play their environmental
cards right.
This growth can be attributed to the new-era households being built with state
enforced eco-friendly codes
and laws that merit actions
for water conservation, reduction of residential green
house gas emissions and
use of recycled materials.
The most noteworthy state
leading the mission for
‘greener building’ practices
is not surprisingly California.
In July 2008, California
passed the strongest progressive legislation on green
building in the United States,
according to Greenbiz.com.
Voluntary until 2010, the
new codes which affect all
new construction statewide,
call for significant increases
in energy efficiency and
water conservation. These
new stringent guidelines
were created to eliminate
construction and building
material waste.
The regulations also dictate that builders lower potable water consumption
and incorporate grey water
systems in new construc-
tion. Additionally, on-site
renewable energy sources
such as solar, wind or geothermal systems must increasingly account for at
least one percent or 1kW,
whichever is greater, of
electric use.
An article in Contractor
magazine that addresses
the new California green
building code, states that
indoor water consumption
will need to be reduced by
at least 20 percent in the
coming years. This is just
the star t of vast policy
changes worldwide which
will require conservation
where it was only “suggested” in the past with water identified as the most
valuable and perishable resource.
Nationwide, building
codes are also beginning
to move towards the use of
high efficiency toilets and
low -f low faucets and
showerheads; the new
standard in home construction and remodeling.
It is forecasted that starting next year water heaters
will have to meet a new efficiency criterion to raise
the current 62 percent energy efficiency level to 80
percent or higher.
In drought stricken areas the imperative to enforce conservation regulations is reaching to the very
local levels of government.
Several counties in the
state of Georgia now require all homes on the market to have low flow toilets
installed prior to closing a
sale. The Atlanta-JournalConstitution newspaper recently reported that residents in DeKalb County
who desire to purchase an
older home must install
these high efficiency toilets
prior to taking occupancy.
Homeowner s failing to
comply will not be able to
obtain water services.This
strict order was passed
late last year af ter the
greater metro Atlanta area
came very near to a complete depletion of potable
water. While other counties
in Georgia have not implemented such drastic mandates, in many towns, the
local government is offering tax rebates upwards of
$100 per water conserving
toilet installed.
So what does this mean
for the home products and
building industry?
The general public, the
building and development
community, manufacturers,
and marketers will learn to
adapt to a new, conservaCONTINUED on PAGE 19A

SDS adds new Video Pipeline
Inspection Equipment
Scientific Detection
Services, Inc. (SDS) has a
new piece of equipment to
better serve our customers! It is a tractor camera,
mounted on a purpose built
truck. This new service
truck provides SDS with
leading edge technology
and a powerful tool, with
fast and simple per formance-based video pipeline inspection equipment,
digital pipeline data collection, and digital data management software for sanitar y and storm sewers.
Now we can inspect larger
pipes for you.
This high cube truck is
equipped with a high performance 6” crawler assembly with balloon wheels
for pipes up to 36”, a Pan
Tilt & Zoom Color Camera
with LED directional lighting that can scan the full
360 degree diameter of the
pipe or look up laterals
from the main line if necessary, and a sophisticated
electronics control room
for (HD) video pipeline data
collection and hard-drive
storage for sanitary and
storm sewers. The truck
has a 1,000 ft. cable reel,
so the camera can crawl
long distances if necessary. The tractor camera is
operated
from
t he
operator’s station in the
front of the 12 ft. truck
body where the computer
and the operator are protected from the weather.
The software in the truck
conforms to the Pipeline
Assessment Certification
Program (PCAP). There is
a touch screen on the computer with a list of PCAP
defects so the operator
can quickly enter the pipe
problems. The inspection
is recorded on the hard
drive and then on to a DVD
for the customer. Harddrive storage improves
speed, convenience, efficiency, and reliability for a
customer ’s inspection
data.
The technology is an example of how far inspection
tec hnology has come.
There was a time when the
only images of pipe interiors were Polaroid photographs. The first inspection
cameras recorded to VHS
videotapes, which were
supplanted in t he late
1990s by CD/DVD storage
systems. Hard-drive (HD)
video information storage
is the latest leap forward.
The ease with which video
files can be located and
searched makes other storage systems seem archaic.

Codes are only going to
get more stringent and
manufacturers that have
anticipated this movement
are already working on the
next generation of products in advance of the rules
of engagement being set.
Those that have not tooled
up to be on the cusp will
be left behind. And it’s not
just products; more importantly, it’s getting on board
with learning about the
natural forces and consumption that is driving legislative action.
Consumers, while still
somewhat daunted by the
idea that “green” products
and services cost more are
that this is actually not as
true as it was in the past
and they are ripe to learn
about and to buy ecologically-sound products. Interest is very high in part
out of absolute necessity to
meet codes but also out of
a resonating perceived
duty in the minds of the
public to be better guardians of the world at large.
This will impact all of us
personally and in our work
arenas and as is the case
in most things, those that
are open to change will get
the greatest level of satisfaction.

ASPE Technical Report
Hello members. Fall is
upon us and this is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful seasons in the south. The
leaves are beginning to turn
and there is a chill in the air.
I want to thank Michael
Davidson with Zurn Industries for presenting last
month’s dinner meeting program on “Innovative Water
Conservation Fixture SysSteve E. Mastley, CPD
V.P. Technical
tems” and for sponsoring
the vendor table with engineering catalogs and the 1/
8 gallon per flush urinal display. This tied nicely into the
program. In light of the current water shortage we are
experiencing here in Georgia this program was well
received and offered a host
of water conservation measures that we as Engineers
and Designers can apply to
our projects to help offset
and ultimately reduce water
demand. Thanks Michael for
a job well done.
This month our monthly
meeting will be replaced
with the ASPE Atlanta Annual Product Show and
Seminars. The program topics are as follows:
Seminar I
Venting Systems for
Today’s Gas Fired Appliances 1:00 – 2:45. This program is presented by Larry
Rohskopf with Mechanical
Sales Company. Larry has
been a guest speaker at
more than 25 ASPE and
ASHRAE meetings around
the country and will be covering the proper venting
applications for all types of
heaters as well as reviewing
sizing and routing of vent
systems to meet current local and National Code requirements.
Seminar II
Grease Interceptor Design and Selection
3:00 – 4:45. This seminar is being presented by
Harry Schnirring with Thompson Company. Harry is
a long time ASPE member
and has done extensive research on this topic over the
last few years.

In the October newsletter, I hinted about an
important announcement
regarding the Chapter’s
40 th Anniversary celebration. The Atlanta Chapter Board is very happy to
announce that our gala
party will be held at the
Georgia Aquarium on Friday, March 13. For such
a milestone event, we will
have many guests with us
that evening, from charter
members, to first and past
p re s i d e n t s , to S o c i et y
dignitaries.
There will be a formal
program to honor the
Chapter’s founders and
celebrate its history. In
addition, a buffet dinner

all attendees. Aquarium
tickets will also be included, if you interested
in touring the exhibits that
evening. We’ve also arranged for a limited number of members to take a
behind-the-scenes look at
the amazingly intricate
plumbing systems t hat
keep the Aquarium functioning.
Formal invitations for
the 40 th anniversary party
will be mailed to all current Chapter members.
The invitation will be open
to members and spouse
or significant other, on a
first-come first-serve basis. Attendance is limited
to a total of 150 guests.
Since this event repre-

funds, we will ask for a
$10 per person refundable deposit to hold your
reservations. Please note
the word “refundable”.
When you and your guest
arrive at the Aquarium,
your $20 check will be

Education Report
Bob Witt, CPD
VP Education
Ever take a vacation and
someone tells you not to
drink the water? Well, on a
recent trip to a place where
I learned to say, “ Mas papel
por los banio! Por Favor!!!”
I found out why they say
that down there. You see we
are spoiled. We can’t drink
that stuff without getting
sick.
Here is why. North of the
border we have pressurized
fresh water systems that are
regulated by municipalities
and the water has to be
clean enough to meet minimum standards before it can
be put into our drinking water systems.
In Mexico they do the
same thing, kinda. They are
having problems with
growth, brown outs and lack
of backflow prevention. This
makes regular water pressure a luxury. Since they
started to go vertical and
have very little water pressure to begin with, they
hoard water. The Mexican
water pressure system,
more often than not, is gravity. They get what water they
can and it is pumped to the
roof. There it is stored in a
barrel and is gravity fed to
the building. This results in
a system of few desires, like
no water pressure on the top
floors, and open air barrels
subject to contamination.
The barrels on the roof are
in the sunshine all day and
you already know what that
does to warm, stagnant
wa t er. M M M ! ! ! Y Y Y Y U U U
MMM!!!!!!!!!!
Even though we think the
water is treated, I believe this
may be one of the sources
of the water problems in
Mexico. Imodium is cheap
insurance. I recommend it.
I came up with a design
to cure one system problem
that many of the buildings
have there. How do you
pressurize an open gravity
hot water system on the upper floors, say 9 and 10 of a
10 story building? If you
have any solutions share
them with us and we will
compare ideas. Any one

Hello ASPE Atlanta.
I hope everyone is doing

How to Choose - and Use Ergonomic Hand Tools
Expert Tips on What Makes a Hand Tool Ergonomic , and How
to Choose the Right One for Your Body and the Job
Drop into any hardware
store or home improvement
center, and you’re likely to
find aisles full of tools labeled “ergonomic.” But what
exactly does that mean for
consumers? Simply put, ergonomics is the science of
designing and producing
tools, furniture, and other
work-related implements
that improve a worker’s efficiency while reducing discomfort, fatigue, and risk of
injury.
“Ergonomically
enhanced tools can include
helpful features like angled
handles, padded handgrips
and non-slip coatings. However, no matter how impressive a tool’s design is, it’s
almost impossible for it to be
universally ergonomic since
human physiques and
project applications vary
greatly from one to the next,”
notes Paul Holstein, COO of
the industry leading eTailer
CableOrganizer .com.
“Whether you’re shopping for ergonomic tools or
just trying to select the right
one for the job from an existing collection, the key
things to consider are
whether or not the tool fits
your hand, how well it suits
the job being done, and
whether or not it eases your
work and prevents you from
straining in ways that could
lead to injury.”
To make the decision
process a little easier,
CableOrganizer.com offers
these guidelines for choosing the right ergonomic
hand tool for your body
type…and the job at hand:
* Because finger size and
placement differs from person to person, avoid using
tools whose handles have
built-in finger grooves. When
fingers don’t naturally align
with grooves, excessive
pressure from the raised
groove edges can cause
discomfort and injury.
* Choose tools with handles
that are covered in a soft
material, like foam or flexible
plastic. Cushioned handles
are not only comfortable for
long hours of use, but they
Page 15B
provide a much firmer grip
and cut down on slippage.
Hard-handled tools can be
quickly and inexpensively
converted by just adding a
sleeve.
* Ensure tool handles are
free from sharp edges and
seams that might irritate or
cut the hands.
* When selecting doublehanded gripping and cutting
tools, opt for ones with
spring-loaded handles that
will automatically return to
the open position.
* If you need to forcefully
pinch or grip an object for
an extended amount of time,
prevent muscle strain by
switching from standard pliers to a clamp or grip.
* Only use tools that allow
you to work with your wrist
in a straight position.
* For tasks that require
force, such as torquing
screws and nuts, hammering, and heavy chiseling,
choose single handle tools
with handle diameters that
range from 1 1/4" - 2".
Larger handles allow fingers
to wrap comfortably around
the tool in a power grip, which
prevents slippage and reduces stress and impact on
hands, fingers and wrists.
* For tasks that call for more
precision and delicacy (like
fine chiseling and driving miniature screws), opt for singlehandle tools whose grips fall
within the 1/4" - 1/2" range.
The smaller diameter handles
make it easy to comfortably
grip tools between the fingertips without overexerting fingers, knuckle joints, or hand
muscles.
* Just as grip diameter affects
work with single-handle tools,
the grip span of pliers, snips,
cable cutters and other
double-handled tools can either make your job easier or
cause you hand fatigue. For
maximum comfort and efficiency for tasks that require
more force (like gripping with
large pliers, cutting wires, or
snipping through sheet
metal), choose tools with a
maximum “open” grip span of
3½ inches, and a “closed”
grip span no less than 2
inches across.
* Detailed jobs that involve
grasping small parts and
components with pincers,
tweezers or tongs are best
done with double-handle
tools whose grip spans range
from no less than 1 inch
(closed) to no more than 3
inches (open).
* When a work space is
tight but the task at hand requires a good deal of force,
opt for “power grip” tools (with
handle diameters from 1¼ 2 inches), which are grasped
with the entire hand instead
of just pinched between the
fingertips. This type of grip
lets you finish the job in far
less time, with far less physical stress.
* Tool length should also be
matched to space constraints. Excessively long
tools can force you to assume
awkward work postures and
wrist positions when you’re
trying to reach components
in cramped areas. Instead,
choose short-handled tools
that give you the freedom to
meet the target work area directly, while keeping your
wrist straight.
* The palms of your hands are
full of pressure-sensitive
nerves and blood vessels,
and in order to avoid
damaging20these during
high force tasks, it’s important
to make sure that the handles
of your tools are long enough
that their ends won’t press
into your palms. To measure,
hold your hand palm-up, with
fingers together and thumb
against the side of your hand.
As long as the tool’s handle
is longer than the widest part
of your hand (the span from
the outer edge of your pinkie
to the outer edge of your
thumb), it’s safe to use.6
