This 65 acre park opened July 1, 2001 and features mature hardwood trees, floodplains and the
Beaver Creek meanders through the 1.4 miles of
paved loop trail. The park’s visitor center has a rustic open-beamed ceiling, gas fireplace and wooden
deck behind the building, which offers a great view
of the Beaver Creek and plenty of wildlife and wildflowers. In the spring you will see plenty of jack-inthe-pulpit, adder’s tongue and cut-leaf toothwort.
The Southern uplands is marked by a large grove of
red pines, Norway spruce and red cedar. See cover
picture.
The meeting room is available to rent for private
parties and community use with a seating capacity of 50 people. There is also a small shelter, playground and soccer field. Please call 440-458-5121
for more information.
Amherst Beaver Creek Reservation is the first
partnership between a city and metro park in the
state of Ohio, carving the way for more partnerships
such as Lakeview and Cascade.
Every Thursday join WOBL and Lorain County General Health District for a Fitness Walk starting at
5:30. This well attended event is a great way to get
out, exercise and make some new friends. In case of
inclement weather you can use Mercy Health & Recreation Center located right around the corner at
47160 Hollstein Dr. Amherst.

Many believe the Black River begins in Cascade Park where
the East and West Branches join together for the journey north
to Lake Erie. In reality, the Black River system or watershed is a
network of small headwater streams that join together to drain
over 450 square miles of land in Ashland, Cuyahoga, Huron, Medina and Lorain counties. A healthy watershed has hundreds of
headwater streams branching out over the drainage area. These
small streams that flow through backyards, forests and fields,
parklands and shopping centers combine and contribute their
share of water and other substances they gather along the way
to form the Black River.
• Headwater streams and other wetlands benefit the Black
River watershed in many ways.
• Natural flood control is provided by healthy streams and
wetlands which absorb significant amounts of rainwater, runoff
and snowmelt.
• Stream networks and wetlands filter, process, stores and
modify some contaminants which improve downstream water
quality.
• Streams and wetlands can trap and retain sediments which
are generated by erosion and runoff, reducing the volume transported downstream and into the Black River.
• Headwater streams provide diverse habitats for plants and
animals. They also contribute to the health of these ecosystems
by transforming organic material into food sources throughout
the aquatic food web.
Water quality and water levels are maintained by a healthy, unaltered headwater stream network. Human modification of these
networks disrupts the natural movement and processes which
can reduce both water quality and quantity. Research shows that
healthy headwater systems are critical to the proper functioning
of larger streams, rivers and lakes. The natural processes that occur in small streams and wetlands provide a host of benefits.

United We Sweat was formed in 2011 to promote healthy living in
Greater Lorain County by raising awareness on the types of fitness
and nutrition options available. The collaboration aims to ensure that
everyone in Lorain County has access to quality physical activities
no matter location, age, or skill level. Every month there are exciting
new classes and events open to the public, so let’s start today and get
moving. This is a core collaboration of University Hospitals, Lorain
County General Health District, Lorain County Metro Parks, French Creek
YMCA, Lorain County Community College and United Way.
Join the sunny fun and check out the
Tropical Holiday display, see how they
celebrate with palms.

MAPLE
SUGARING
When people think of maple sugaring, they usually
think of the forests of Canada, or states like Vermont
and New Hampshire, but usually not Ohio! While the
majority of the world’s maple syrup and other maple
syrup products like the delicious candies made in the
shape of a maple leaf are produced and exported from
February 27 & 28
more northern climates (like Canada and Vermont), in
March 5, 6, 12, 13
truth the entire Great Lakes region of North America
11:30 am - 3:30 pm
can
produce maple syrup. That’s because this area has
Carlisle Visitor Center
the right kind of trees (sugar maples with the most
amount of sugar in their sap) and the right kind of
springtime weather (freezing nights coupled with warm
days). This region, including Ohio, is the only region
in the world that has the right combination of factors
needed for Maple Sugaring. Aren’t we the lucky ones!
To learn more about the unique process of turning sap from Sugar Maple trees into delicious maple
syrup, join us at the Carlisle Visitor Center on February
27 or 28, March 5, 6, 12, or 13 from 11:30-3:30. We
will explore the history and science of Maple Sugaring
through hands-on activities geared for all ages. Discover the secrets of maple sugaring by a brief indoor
lecture, hiking to the sugar bush and collecting sap
with a Naturalist, and visiting the Sugar Shack to see
the sap being converted into syrup. Train rides through
a second sugar bush may also be available,
weather permitting. Below is the schedule
of events for each program day.

Cabin Fever Fun Day:
February 15th, 2016 • Noon-4pm
Recipe for Cabin Fever: Long nights and short days mixed with snow, ice, and wind,
with just a pinch of having the kids inside the house too much. Blend well with boredom and depression. The medical term for this is Seasonal Affective Disorder. Many
people in the Midwest show signs and symptoms in the winter months.
Want to bust out of that cabin slump? Join us on a holiday for a celebration of winter at Sandy Ridge Reservation.
Ongoing activities include: Self-guided Scavenger Hunt, Snow Games, Campfire with
cooking demos, and activities inside the Johnson Wetland Center. Paula Harding and
her Lazy Dog Huskies will be on display and will be doing sled demonstrations at 1:00
and 3:00pm. And we’ll have snowshoe rentals from Noon-3:00pm. $2.00 per person per
