And this sector had some hard knocks during the crisis. Their turnover dropped and so did ours’, Beemster explains. ‘I managed to find alternative work for my employees and Tanido continued its activities in quite a different form.’ With three ladies running the office, three fulltime and two parttime surveyors, the company survived the crisis and is on the rise once again. Presently, the company is training a number of marine surveyors – mostly experienced people from other shipping sectors – who will be working for Tanido as self-employed contractors. ‘This does not mean that they are only offered work on a free-lance basis. We strive to distribute the work we are offered in an honest way, in order to provide our contractors equally. We cannot give any guarantees, but as business is growing, so is our confidence for the future.’ One of the services Tanido provides is offshore lightering of bulk carriers. Beemster: ‘When ships come in from deep sea, they usually have too much draught to navigate the GhentTerneuzen Canal. These ships can discharge parts of their load into push barges, and at the moment the precise maximum draught is reached, it can continue on through the locks. Because of our accurate surveying equipment, the vessels can be loaded to their maximum draught – no more, since this is not permitted and may involve fines and delays. That would be a waste of money.’ Tanido has developed a unique system for bulk carriers to conduct loading and discharging operations. 23 This concept was accredited by the Dutch Ministry of Transport. It is a highly accurate system, because draught measurements are taken using laser technology, eliminating guesswork. It is fast and efficient, with a minimum of time loss for the vessel and the terminal. ‘After our intervention during the lightering operations near Terneuzen at the anchorage, vessels are allowed to pass through the lock and sail the canal to the port of Ghent with a 12.50 freshwater draught. The official FW draught restriction is 12.25 m.’ In addition to lightering, Tanido’s activities include draught surveys, bunker & condition surveys, prepurchase condition surveys on vessels, and damage surveys, safeguarding fair bunker deliveries, inspection and sampling of bulk petroleum products and chemicals, cleanliness inspections, laser gauging of barges and cargo-loss control programmes. The company operates in all Dutch and Belgian ports, with the emphasis on Terneuzen, Vlissingen, Ghent, Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Rotterdam. Vlissingen 700 year-old port Vlissingen is almost synonymous to port. In fact, it’s hard to tell which came first: the harbour or the town? It all started back in the Middle Ages. There was good anchoring ground off the coast: firm, but not too hard. That’s where the quay was constructed. Ships could drop anchor, small ships could be pulled onto the beach, and here, just behind what is now the Nolledijk, is where Oud-Vlissingen arose. A little to the east was a stream where ships could shelter from stormy weather conditions. In winter, cogs, carvels and galleons would find a sheltered harbour here, which doubled as a connection between the sea and the inland waterways. The ideal port was born. Between Northern and Southern Europe, in-between the Eastern and Western Scheldt River, a fine transit port came into being. Count William III proved to have a keen mind and decided around 1315 to have a sizable harbour built. It is still possible to pinpoint the exact spot, because this harbour has been in use for quite a long time. It comprises, in fact, a triple harbour: the Voorhaven (front harbour), the Koopmanshaven (merchants’ harbour) and the Achterhaven (back harbour). What used to be the Koopmanshaven is now the Bellamypark, and the Achterhaven used to be where the current Spuistraat runs. Vlissingen fishermen were very enterprising. They were the ones ensuring growth. They caught the fish and sold them abroad. In turn, they brought back merchandise such Petrus Segaers: Vlissingen in 1669. A bird’s-eye view of the situation in the harbours of Vlissingen. (muZEEum) and expansion was needed all the time. In 1609, Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange (1567-1625), ordered a new harbour to be constructed east of Vlissingen. It included a lock and a dock where ships could moor without being troubled by the tide. It was good to keep the keel under water. A century later, this harbour was expanded with a dry dock. Innovation upon innovation. Despite wars with Spaniards, English and French, Vlissingen maintained its position – thanks to and despite of its harbours. After all, the harbours were always an important strategic position, with Antwerp just down the River Scheldt. chants were staying in this town and Middelburg had the staple right to very many types of commodities. This was stunting the growth of Vlissingen. Fishing ships in the front harbour, J.C. Schotel, 1830. In the tidal harbour ships lay dry half of the time. Advantage: When the tide cam in, the town was cleansed. (municipal archives of Vlissingen) as salt, cabbage and wine. Business was thriving and pretty soon, there was a shortage of mooring berths. By the mid fifteenth century, the English harbour, or fishermen’s harbour, was dug. The world around Vlissingen In the meantime, the world was growing. The Dutch and the English merchant fleets joined the Portuguese and Spanish ones to conquer the world. Quite modestly at first, but soon we had regular services going to Asia. The Americas were discovered, as well as the many riches to be found there. Zeeland also participated in these developments. The port of Vlissingen had everything in it to grow, except for the fact that the different towns on Walcheren were involved in a fierce power struggle. Although Middelburg had the least favourable location of all harbours in Walcheren, it occupied the most powerful position. Many foreign mer- Cut-out from the Panorama of Walcheren, made by A. van de Wijngaerde. Around 1550. It clearly shows the ample harbour capacity Vlissingen had at its disposal during the late Middle Ages. 24 Historians all agree that the events that occurred in 1572 determined Vlissingen’s future. In 1572, the Revolt (15681648), also known as the Dutch War of Independence or the Eighty Years’ War, was well underway. In April of that year, Vlissingen was the first town to admit William of Orange and his Protestants. And the town did well out of it, because it was rewarded with the same mercantile laws as Middelburg, the right to expand, and, above all, the permission to build new harbours with carpenter’s shipbuilding yards and cranes. This proved an enormous boost to the town. And while the port was growing, the town of Vlissingen not surprisingly produced a number of sea heroes. The Evertsen family, for example, had already built up quite a fortune from the merchant trade. Jan Evertsen was sailing the seven seas. Michiel de Ruyter was a young lad while the new district east of Vlissingen was being constructed. He heard the seafaring stories that inspired him to become the national hero he is remembered as. In the harbours, the fishing boats were moored next to the merchant vessels and the ships that combined merchant shipping with privateering. The ships were getting taller Cut-out of The arrival of Elizabeth Stuart and Frederik van de Palts in Vlissingen in 1613, A. Willaerts. Vlissingen was a port of importance, considering the fact that Dutch royalty welcomed the British king and queen in ships on the Scheldt River. (muZEEum) 25 Dokje van Perry (‘the small dock of Perry’) The oldest dry dock of the Netherlands was built in Vlissingen because it already had a modern harbour. The English marine officer John Perry (1670-1733) was assigned to make the design. The small dock was named after him. It was constructed in the Ganzengat, a water in-between two existing harbours. Mattheus Gargon, Walcherse Arcadia, 1715. The dry dock as it was in the eighteenth century. Eastward bound By the end of the nineteenth century, after the canal through Walcheren was built, two new inland harbours were constructed. De Schelde Shipyard came to Vlissingen and shipbuilding was given a new boost. The shipyard left a strong mark on the maritime character of the town and the trade & industry surrounding it. These no longer concerned innovations to the harbour, but the special ships that were built here, including the first submarine, the KI, and the passenger ship Willem Ruys. In 1931, Queen Wilhelmina opened the first outer harbour. And the growth continued. During the nineteen sixties, Vlissingen expanded further east, where Vlissingen-Oost was built. In 1964, the ships’ repair yard of De Schelde was the first company to establish in the Sloehaven. And history is repeating itself – the ‘natural’ growth continues and is only stunted by political circumstances. Vlissingen remains an excellent location for mooring and transhipment. Cranes in the harbour, 1950 (the archives of photographer Dert) out by means of a chain mill driven by three blindfolded horses. This innovation contributed to the popularity of Vlissingen as a port of note. Yet it was not smooth sailing all the way. The small dock was troubled by pileworm, leaking lock gates, and shortages of money resulting in poor maintenance. In addition, the dock fell victim to the Napoleonic wars. The English, who occupied Vlissingen in 1809, blew up the dock lock. Subsequently, Napoleon had the locks repaired. In 1834, things were taken to a higher level. The dock was enlarged and the lock gates replaced by a ship’s lock. The horses were replaced by a steam engine. Submarine In 1875, the dock was incorporated in the De Schelde shipyard. It was used for a long time after that. Special ships moored here in the past, including the first Dutch submarine, the KI, in 1911. Since the nineteen sixties, the De Schelde shipyard no longer had use for the dock. In 1974, it was filled in. Today, now that the former Schelde site is once again owned by the town, the dock will be given a central position once again. As a part of our heritage: a place of interest to add lustre to the new town district around the dock harbour. Submarine in dry dock, early twentieth century. (municipal archives of Vlissingen) Blindfolded horses The dry dock was an important improvement for Vlissingen and for the shipping industry, because the water could be drained from the dock completely in order to work on the bottom of ships. Ships had to be regularly cleaned, repaired and caulked. To allow the water to drain, two lock gates were made. The water was pumped 26 Istimewa’s 40th anniversary 29 September was a wonderful, sunny day. It was Istimewa’s Open House Day for business relations, to celebrate the company’s fortieth anniversary. ‘The in-company celebrations had already taken place a couple of weeks before’, Kees Kolen, commercial manager with Istimewa Elektro, explains. ‘After all, these past forty years could not have been this successful if it hadn’t been for our most important asset, our human resource capital.’ Istimewa’s personnel demonstrated their dedication to the company by turning the Open House Day for business relations into a great success. ‘Logistically, the day was organised like a dream’, Kolen says. ‘Buses were brought into action to bring around two hundred clients and business partners to the Istimewa site in VlissingenOost.’ The visitors enjoyed Zeelandstyle festivities surrounding an informal tour around the premises. ‘We showed them how we make operating panels and cabinets and we tested a large electric motor in their presence. Our objective was to show them who we are and what we do, and treat them to fresh Zeeland mussels and a glass of white wine in the meantime.’ Istimewa is involved in many different activities. Projects range from electrotechnical installations on drilling rigs, the construction of a production line for groundnuts in China, and the ultra-modern terminal Euromax on the Maasvlakte, to sustainable lighting systems for tunnels, a tidal energy project, large-scale infrastructural works, renovations to bridges, and improvements to lock complexes. Kolen gives a few examples: ‘We have contributed to a sunk-down tunnel that was built in Korea, have realised the technical installations for the Heerema production platform De Ruyter, and have recently started on a new, major project that involves the construction of an energy platform for the offshore wind park Dolwin.’ 27 Istimewa Elektro was founded in 1971 in Heinkenszand by Adrie Janse. From the shop in electrical household appliances, the company developed into an electrical engineering firm with a worldwide reputation of excellence. Adrie’s daughter Scarlett Kwekkeboom-Janse, who took over the company in 1996, ensured further growth and was awarded the Prix de Veuve Clicquot, a prestigious prize she was awarded for her courage, drive and entrepreneurship. Since 2007, the company is owned by Stork Technical Services. ‘To ensure the continuity of the company in the long term, Scarlett Kwekkeboom-Janse sold her shares to the Stork Concern’, Kolen explains. ‘Thanks to Stork, we can fall back on a world-wide presence in the strongly growing and fiercely competitive global electrical market.’ A green port Belangrijke overeenkomst Oiltanking Terneuzen BV en Noorse Statoil porting the Fishing for Litter project by KIMO Nederland. In addition, the roof of the head office of Zeeland Seaports has been provided with solar panels generating sufficient power to charge the cars all year round. Green Award In addition to the in-company efforts, Zeeland Seaports also stimulates other companies to become more sustainable. For example where cleaner inland navigation is concerned. In future, barges operating in a cleaner way, thus contributing to a better environment, will be given a discount. The environmental award Zeeland Seaports will be granting is called ‘Green Award’, which is derived from the standard with the same name that was introduced in the maritime industry in 1994 in order to promote the quality of ocean-going vessels. Around the world, ships and shipping companies are being certified in the areas of quality, safety and the environment according to the Green Award standard (see www.greenaward.org). The advantages of extra clean and extra safe ships are clear: image improvement, a better position commercially, and discounts on harbour dues and professional training courses. In line with the economic developments, Zeeland Seaports is working on the sustainability of the port area. The port authority is not only introducing green measures itself, it also actively stimulates and activates other port-related organisations to choose for sustainable entrepreneurship. After all, a better environment is created by making the first step in the right direction. For example, Zeeland Seaports operates two company cars Summary in Dutch De Noorse energiereus Statoil en Oiltaking Terneuzen BV bereikten een belangrijk samenwerkingsakkoord. Own footprint Waste collection Zeeland Seaports is currently calculating its own CO2 Sound waste collection is another important topic. Zeeland Seaports has organised its waste-collection procedure for ships in an easy, quick and cost-efficient manner. This way, they are hoping that the possibility to hand in waste is made use of on a wide scale, resulting in a cleaner sea thanks to the combined efforts of the port authority and the shipping trade. ‘Apart from a fixed waste contribution, our clients do not have to pay anything extra for the handing in of waste.’ In addition, Zeeland Seaports is sup- footprint. ‘How much CO2 are we actually consuming? Nature is very important to the ports of Zeeland. For example, the work on the recreation area ‘De Groene Knoop’ near Westdorpe was recently concluded and the construction of a new area in Ecologische Hoofdstructuur (EHS) was started up. The EHS – literally Ecological Main Structure – is a network of existing and yet to be developed nature areas in the Netherlands. Together, these form a long strand of nature through the Netherlands, which forms the basis of the Dutch nature policy. To compensate for the development of the horticultural area near Westdorpe, Zeeland Seaports is surrounding this area by nature connecting up to the EHS.
