National Honor Society Candidate Evaluation Rubric Each portion of the application is worth 5 points for a total of 20 points possible. Applicants must earn a minimum of 15 points and have points earned in all sections to be offered membership into NHS. School Activities # of Activities and years Points w/ Description Example: School play for 9th & 10th grade 0 0 counts as 2 items, while Tennis for grade 1-­‐10 1 11 only counts as 1 item. 11-­‐20 2 21+ 3 Activities without an Advisor signature will not be counted. Each Teacher Recommendation Form will be counted for 1 point if all of the comments are positive and all checkmarks are in the “Excellent” or “Good” columns. Community Service Total Number of Hours Points w/ Description 0 0 1-­‐50 1 51-­‐100 2 101+ 3 Service without an Advisor or parent signature will not be counted. An excellent reference letter with examples of service will count for 2 points. A good reference letter will count for 1 point. A poor reference letter or no reference letter included will count for 0 points. Essays Essay 1 Rubric Description Writer does an exemplary job of explaining why they would like to be considered for NHS. Statements are supported with specific examples of how the candidate meets the qualifications of character, leadership, and service. Writer does a good job of explaining why they would like to be considered for NHS. Statements are supported with some examples of how the candidate meets the qualifications of character, leadership, and service or the examples given are somewhat vague. Writer does a minimal job of explaining why they would like to be considered for NHS. Some statements are not supported with examples of how the candidate meets the qualifications of character, leadership, and service or the examples given are vague. Writer does not complete essay Essay 2 Rubric Description Writer does an exemplary job of writing about a teacher who has impacted their life in character, leadership, service, or scholarship. Writer supports statements with examples and communicates ideas effectively. Writer does a good job of explaining how a teacher has impacted their life in character, leadership, service, or scholarship.
