the MVIAA. Iowa St., Kansas, Kansas St., Missouri, Nebraska
and Oklahoma were joined by Colorado (1948) (conference
then known as Big Seven) and Oklahoma St. (1958) (conference then known as Big Eight until 1996). All eight members
of the Big Eight joined four former Southwest Conference

ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
Founded: In 1931 as Border Intercollegiate Athletic
Association. Charter members were Arizona, Arizona
St. Teachers’ (Flagstaff) (now Northern Ariz.), Arizona St.
Teachers’ (Tempe) (now Arizona St.), New Mexico and New
Mexico A&M (now New Mexico St.). Texas Tech was admitted
in 1932, Texas Mines (now UTEP) was admitted in 1935, and

*Texas Tech has been listed by some as conference champion
for the years 1932, 1933 and 1934, but conference rules forbade
an official conference championship. This was due to the fact
that the conference covered such a large area that games
between all members were not practical.
**Texas Tech won its two conference games in 1938 but did not
win the official championship since it did not meet the conference three-game requirement. Its victory over New Mexico did
not count toward the championship, permitting New Mexico to
share championship honors with New Mexico St.
MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE

OLD ROCKY MOUNTAIN
CONFERENCE
(Mountain States Athletic Conference and
Big Seven Conference)
Founded: This conference predates every conference
except the Big Ten and consisted of BYU (1922), Colorado
(1900), Colorado Agricultural College (now Colorado St.)
(1900), Colorado St. College (1900), Denver (1900), Utah
(1902), Utah St. (1902) and Wyoming (1905). Before 1938,
these schools were part of the Rocky Mountain Conference,
other members of which, at that time, were Colorado Col.,
Colorado Mines, Greeley St. Teachers’ (now Northern Colo.),
Montana St. (1917) and Western St. Teachers’ (now Western
St.) (1925). A split took place in 1938, when the Mountain
States Athletic Conference or “Big Seven” was formed. The
name Rocky Mountain Conference was retained by the
last six schools after 1938. Some members went into the
Western Athletic Conference when the RMC was dissolved
in 1962.
