AVX Circuit Protection
Designers must take careful precautions so that transient surges do not destroy sensitive CMOS circuitry. Typically designers
must harden circuitry from transient surges that range from sub nanosecond ESD pulses to slow speed, higher power transients
such as automotive alternator load dump or power line transients. These threats occur in all electronic systems – automotive,
military, telecom, medical, consumer and industrial sectors. Multilayer Varistors (MLVs) are an effective solution to suppress
transient voltages. MLVs have electrical and physical advantages over traditional means of transient protection – such as zener
diodes. MLVs are available in operating voltages as low as 3.3 volts and energy ratings as high as 50 joules.
Physical Advantages
Electrical Advantages
The primary physical advantage is the small size of AVX MLVs.
MLVs are available in case sizes from 0201 to 3220 discrete
package and also as arrays in dual (0405, 0508) and quad
(0612) package.
Electrical advantages include their EMI filter response, fast
“turn on” time and repetitive strike capability. A single MLV
takes the place of a back-to-back diode, plus an EMC capacitor
thereby saving up to 90% of the board space that zener & capacitor solutions demand. An equivalent circuit model and the S21
filter response of the 0402 products are shown below. In its “off ”
state, the network acts like an EMI filter. In its “on” state the
MLV works like back-to-back zener diodes. MLV capacitance
ranges from 0.47 pF to 9.6 nF.
AVX MLVs are also lead free, fully RoHS compliant and have
standard nickel barrier terminations with 100% matte tin plated
finish.

High Voltage Capacitors – Ceramic „Pucks“, SMDs, Leaded
High Voltage Ceramic „Puck“
High voltage applications require capacitors with high internal resistance, high dielectric strength and low or moderate losses at
working frequencies (from 50Hz up to 10kHz). High voltage ceramic „pucks“ meet these requirements and are suitable for usage for
high voltage applications up to 100kV. Target Applications: High-voltage supply for gas lasers, high-voltage dividers, Marx generators,
power generators, high-voltage power supply, high-voltage coupling devices, lighting arresters ect.

High Voltage SMDs
High value, low leakage and small size are difficult parameters to obtain in capacitors for high voltage systems. AVX special high
voltage MLC chip capacitors meet these performance characteristics. Larger physical sizes than normally encountered chips are
used to make high voltage MLC chip products.
Special precautions must be taken in applying these chips in surface mount assemblies. Target Applications: Snubbers in high
frequency power converters, resonators in SMPS, high voltage coupling/decoupling blocking.

High Voltage Leaded
In some applications usage of SMD high voltage capacitors is not the best option. In harsh environments it is sometimes better
to use high voltage leaded capacitors. The leads work as absorbers that prevent capacitors against mechanical and thermal damage.
Target Applications: Snubbers high frequency power converters, resonators in SMPS, high voltage coupling/DC blocking.

Ceramic Capacitors –
Low Inductance, Capacitor Arrays, Ultra Thin Capacitors
Low Inductance Capacitors
The ESL (Equivalent Series Inductance) of a capacitor determines the speed of energy transfer to load. The lower the ESL
of a capacitor, the faster the energy can be transfered to a load.
The key physical characteristic determining ESL of a capacitor
is the size of the current loop it creates. The smaller the current
loop, the lower the ESL.
Target applications:
High speed decoupling (ASICs, DSPs, FPGAs, ...),
servers, mainframe computers, graphic boards, etc.
