Human Cost of Piracy
• Third report released 18 June2013
•
• IMB seafarer survey - online poll for seafarers:
• Highest concern for:
 family and their worry for loved ones at sea
 uncertainty of personal safety
 being boarded / kidnapped / beaten / killed
• High reluctance to inform family of area of travel unless
having BMP + armed teams…
Conclusions
• Shipping - complex and remains “out of sight – out of mind”
• Reports stimulate response – value in single independent RC
• Somalia – guard against complacency
• Gulf of Guinea – generation of change
• Human Element not to be forgotten
• Acknowledge – crime of piracy local – effects global
Lessons learnt – Information shared is knowledge gained
