Media Literacy Services in MInDSpace
Non-traditional and traditional
students gather information
from a variety of resources.
The Internet, news programs,
and print publications provide
students with print, video,
audio, and visual information.
Information Literacy services
available through the Bucks
Library aide faculty members
in guiding their students
through the process of conducting research and evaluating scholarly articles.
Students need to develop the
same critical research and
evaluation skills for images,
audio clips, and video clips.
These media literacy skills
meet the demands placed
upon Bucks graduates in increasingly visual and digital
based scholarly and professional environment.
In addition to teaching media
literacy skills to students, the
media literacy services team
in MInDSpace (multimedia
instruction design space) at
the BCCC Newtown Library
also provides guidance to
faculty in developing assignments with multimedia components.
Whether taking a
pre-existing assignment or
creating an entirely new assignment, the MInDSpace
team can provide the software, technology tools, and
instructional resources to faculty and students to successfully use multimedia to meet
learning objectives.
For example, during the fall
semester, the MInDSpace
team worked with effective
speaking students in building
presentations through alternatives to PowerPoint such as
Prezi (http://www.prezi.com).
The students met in the library for one class to discuss
how to search for resources
for multimedia, how to use
alternatives to PowerPoint,
and how to comply with Copyright laws and Fair Use guidelines. The class structure can
be altered to fit the assignment requirements for each
course.
Faculty using multimedia in
the classroom, or planning to
use multimedia in the classroom, are encouraged to meet
with the MInDSpace team to
build effective multimedia
assignments that develop
media literacy skills.
To contact the MInDSpace
team, email Jackie Fritz, New
Media Librarian, at fritzja@
bucks.edu or call Jackie at
(215) 497-8711. Other members of the MInDSpace team
assisting with media literacy
include Matt Seibert, Emerg-
ing Technologies Librarian,
and Karl Carter, Director,
Learning Technologies Services.
Matt Seibert also
teaches media literacy sessions. He can be reached by
email at seibert@bucks.edu or
by phone (215) 968-8304.
Karl Carter ensures faculty
receive the technology needed
to complete the multimedia
course requirement. Karl can
be reached by email at carterk@bucks.edu or by phone
at (215) 504-8548. The entire MInDSpace team communicates the course assignment
requirements to each other, in
order to meet the technology
tool and instruction needs for
each course.

Frank Eckert
Learning Resources is sad to report the recent death of
Frank Eckert, who passed away on February 4th. A resident of Levittown and a 1973 graduate of BCCC, Frank
was a retired electronics engineer who showed his appreciation for the education that he received at the College by
donating funds to the Library for the purchase of print and
electronic resources, primarily in the area of technology.
