Be the Hero of Your Story

Be the Hero of Your Story
A couple of years ago,
my wife Jennifer and I had
the privilege of seeing the original cast of Big Fish in Chicago
before its Broadway debut. We knew immediately it was a show
we wanted to bring to Danville. While
DLO was planning their
60th season, the community rights to Big
Fish became available
and we couldn’t think of a more perfect finale for that 60th season.
Luckily DLO agreed.
Big Fish is a beautiful combination of a big, old
fashioned Broadway
show with big sets, grand costumes and
exciting production
numbers and a contemporary theatrical piece
with complicated
characters, a brilliantly layered book and simple
scenic ideas. As
a theatre lover who can’t decide which genre
I prefer, this is a
perfect blend. It is my goal that you will see these two styles meld
together for a truly enjoyable experience.
We have assembled a truly wonderful production team
of long time directors, designers and leaders to bring
this story to life, and DLO legends, Nancy Henderson
and Robert Scott lead a multi-talented cast of characters.
All of these hardworking individuals will help bring you a quality
production to conclude 60 years of DLO and usher in the next 60
years.

A Season of Celebration and Remembrance by Ron McDaniel, DLO Historian
DLO’s 60th season has been one in which we have
celebrated our humble beginning and our increasing
success, and remembered the contributions of several
former cast members who left us. At Guys and Dolls, we
were delighted to honor our founding secretary, Arlene
Howard Jaynes, who attended the Sunday matinee with
her family. We were also pleased to acknowledge founder
Myrtle Young Clifton, who currently resides in Beaver
Dam, WI. Visit our website, dlomusicaltheatre.com, click
“About Us,” and read the history of DLO. Then, click
“Contact Us,” and let us know if you have photos or other
memorabilia you would like to donate or share.
This season we lost three of our most talented cast
members from past years. In October came the death of
DLO past president Jack Baldwin, the male lead in our
very first production, The Merry Widow, in 1956. Over
the next 13 years, Jack went on to play male leads in
10 more DLO shows. The Baldwin family has generously
donated to the DLO archives an audio recording of Jack
performing some of his favorite musical numbers from the
shows in which he appeared.
Just weeks before Jack’s passing, we learned of the
death of Barbara Hollen (formerly Barbara Laking). Barbara
graced our stage in The Sound of Music (1964), in The
King and I (1965), in Guys and Dolls (1967), and opposite
Jack Baldwin in Kiss Me Kate. I will always remember
dancing with Barbara in The King and I. To the audience,
she appeared to smile broadly as we waltzed around the
stage. However, up close, I could see that the smile was
really a grimace, because beneath her beautiful lavender
gown, I was clumsily stepping repeatedly on her toes.
In November, we were saddened by the death of Elaine
France, who appeared in many DLO shows. Among her
most memorable roles were Mammy Yokum in Li’l Abner
and Minnie Fay in Hello, Dolly! (1971). I met Elaine in my
first DLO show, Annie Get Your Gun, in 1961, and we
remained friends from then on. She will be remembered,
not only for her beautiful waist-length hair, but for her
sunny disposition that brightened rehearsals for all of us
who worked with her. As we bring our 60th season to
a close, we look forward to a promising future, and we
remember those who helped make DLO what it is today.
