The formative philosophy for SPOKE lies in the union of musicians
distinguished not merely by their virtuosity and musical experience, but
by a unique emphasis on composition and group interplay. In the last year,
SPOKE member have performed at major festivals and venues on every
continent except Antarctica, including countries like Argentina, China,
Australia, France, Ghana, India, Russia and Japan. They have also performed
with artists such as T.S. Monk, Dave Holland, the Mingus Big Band, Richard
Bona and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. To be present at one of their
performances is to embark upon a truly captivating musical journey
where they impart and share the joy and fun woven into their music and
friendship.
Lead by newly appointed Detroit Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster
Yoonshin Song, principal players from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
open the classical side of this years School of Music Guest Artist Concert
Series. Featured in this performance will be the Brahms Piano Quintet
Op. 34, in F Minor. Ms. Song is joined by Robert DeMaine, DSO principal
cello, Hai Xin Wu, assistant principal violin, James Van Valkenburg, assistant
principal viola, and CMU faculty pianist Zhihua Tang. This performance
is made possible by the Souren L. Chamichian, M.D., Artist-in-Residencey
Endowment.

Arcos Trio members Seunghee Lee, violin, and Carl Donakowski, cello, have
been performing together in the United States and abroad since 1994. With
the addition of pianist Anthony Padilla, the Arcos Trio has embarked in an
exciting new direction. Arcos Trio performances blend re-exploration of the
classics with lesser known works and music of our own time, particularly
emphasizing works by American, Latin American and women composers.

Originality is what versatile drummer Jeff Hamilton brings to the groups he
performs with and is one of the reasons why he is constantly in demand.
Influenced by Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Mel Lewis, “Philly” Joe Jones and
One of the United Kingdom’s cultural treasures, the 2011-12 season found the
Gould Piano Trio celebrating its’ 20th Anniversary year. The Trio is an ensemble
with an enviable reputation for musical integrity and imagination which has
continued to evolve since their early success in winning the Charles Hennen
and Melbourne international chamber-music competitions. The ‘Goulds’
are the first ensemble to record the complete cycle of Brahms’ piano trios,
including his two surviving early essays in the genre and the famous clarinet
and horn trios. Their homage to Messiaen – ‘Quatour pour la fin du temps’
(Chandos) – in his centenary year was described by BBC Music Magazine as
‘…the best modern account…’ of the work.

Saxophonist Taimur Sullivan enjoys a prolific career as a soloist, chamber
musician, and member of the acclaimed PRISM Quartet. His performances
have taken him from the stages of Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and
the Knitting Factory, to engagements in Moscow, London, Germany,
and throughout Latin America, and have garnered him critical praise as
“outstanding…his melodies phrased as if this were an old and cherished
classic, his virtuosity supreme” (New York Times) and as a player of “dazzling
proficiency” (American Record Guide). Since 1994 he has been the principal
saxophonist for numerous ensembles in New York City, performing with
ensembles such as Ensemble 21, Ensemble Sospeso, Speculum Musicae,
Mark Morris Dance Company, Bang On a Can All-Stars, and many others.

been performed all over the world by the Kronos Quartet, eighth blackbird,
the American Composers Orchestra, New York City Opera, the Minnesota
Orchestra, the Albany Symphony, the South Carolina Philharmonic, Dublin’s
Crash Ensemble, New York City’s NOW Ensemble and many others.

Pianist Joel Fan is one of the most dynamic and accomplished musicians
performing before the public today. Widely known for his collaboration
with the renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, he is also
consistently acclaimed for his recitals, recordings, and appearances with
orchestras throughout the world. His concerts attract a wide range of
audiences, as he has eagerly embraced traditional piano literature as well
as an eclectic range of repertoire, including new music commissioned
especially for him, world music, and his own transcriptions. Mr. Fan’s
engaging personality, technical assurance, lyricism, and sheer musicality
A member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra since 1992, Mr. Zook enjoys
an national and international performing and teaching career. His studies
were at the Interlochen Arts Academy, University of Michigan, and in 1988 he
received the coveted Recitalist’s Diploma from the Royal Academy of Music in
London. During the past 20 years, orchestral and chamber music making has
taken him to Europe, North Africa, Canada, and all over the United States.

Shelly Manne, Jeff’s early career featured stints with Oscar Peterson, Ray
Brown, as well as being a member of Lionel Hampton’s band and Woody
Herman’s Thundering Herd. For this year’s Jazz Weekend, Jeff brings the
rest of his rhythm section with him, pianist Tamir Hendelman and bassist
Christoph Luty, to help Central Michigan University celebrate its 40th annual
CMU Jazz Weekend.

Detroit Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players

André J. Thomas is in demand as a choral adjudicator, clinician, and
director of Honor/All-State Choirs throughout the United States, Europe,
Asia, New Zealand, and Australia. Dr. Thomas has conducted choirs at the
state, division, and national conventions of the Music Educators National
Conference (MENC) and American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). His
international conducting credits are extensive, including conductor/clinician
for the International Federation of Choral Musicians, summer residency of
the World Youth Choir in the Republic of China and the Philippines, and a
winter residency of the World Youth Choir in Europe. He has been the guest
conductor of such distinguished orchestras and choirs as the Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra in England, and guest Conductor for the Berlin Radio
Choir in Germany.
