Nation-building is at the heart of what we do at Metrobank Foundation. Building a nation means strengthening our democratic institutions to prepare for the challenges of the future. It is empowering our communities to develop their full potential and enable individuals to meaningfully influence shared progress to the greater society. It is inspiring Filipinos to dream for themselves, their families, communities and the country and empowering them with opportunities to help fulfill these dreams. Mission We envision a professionally run, responsive, proactive, and creative organization through which the Metrobank Group of Companies is able to express its commitment to lead the private sector in fostering holistic human development in both the national and international arena, thereby effecting an empowered society whose members are able to realize their human potential. Vision To realize its vision, the Foundation shall propagate a culture of excellence with a human face by actively implementing, assisting, and supporting programs which strengthen and advance the strategic sectors of society as well as respond to the needs of the disadvantaged. Looking back on how far we have come, our nation-building efforts are making progress. 1 Translating Our Vision to Reality The task of nation-building is the duty of all Filipinos, and it is a responsibility we have always taken to heart. As Metrobank grew into an industry leader, it was imperative that we lead in community service as well. This is the philosophy behind the Metrobank Foundation in 1979. As the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of the Metrobank Group, the Foundation implements various nationbuilding efforts which focus on empowering our people and strengthening key sectors in our society. In 2014, we celebrated the Foundation’s 35th anniversary and reflected on our journey in pursuit of these goals. From our early philanthropic activities to our recent investments on human and social development, we have remained true to our vision. In the last three decades, we have recognized hundreds outstanding Filipinos in education, arts and design, military, police and the media, providing our people with role models and inspirations and inspiring positive changes in their respective communities. By honoring their dedication, hard work and excellence, we hope to have also elevated the character of their respective professions. Through our grant-making initiatives and social investments, we have created opportunities for our people to pursue their dreams and lead meaningful and productive lives. In the last decade alone, Metrobank Group’s collective CSR investments have reached some PhP 600 million, cementing our mission as one of the leading corporate foundations in the country. As the Metrobank Foundation starts another chapter in our history, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to building a stronger nation. Undeniably, we have a long way to go. But just as we endeavor to maintain the trust our clients have generously given the Bank during the past half a century, we will continue to uphold the greater good and promote the interest of our stakeholders in the next 35 years and beyond. Hon. Artemio V. Panganiban Dr. George S.K. Ty Chairman, Board of Advisers Chairman Metrobank Foundation and Metrobank Group Former Chief Justice, Supreme Court of the Philippines 2 3 Fulfilling a Shared Dream Aniceto M. Sobrepeña President 2014 was a special year for Metrobank Foundation. Apart from our 35th founding anniversary, we also marked the 30th year of two (2) of our pioneering programs, namely, the Search for Outstanding Teachers (SOT) and the Metrobank Art & Design Excellence (MADE). Our other programs have also given us many reasons to celebrate: the success of our first digital national finals of the Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC); the implementation of the first Metrobank Foundation Fellowship in Journalism and Metrobank Foundation Alice Guillermo Award for Art Criticism; and the strengthened community involvement of our alumni organizations through Operation MATHew and Project HeART. These feats were gratifying indeed, but these also reminded us why we do what we do. Our CSR work is about the people whose lives we have honored and touched, and have had the privilege of welcoming into the Metrobank family of Outstanding Filipinos. This realization became clearer when we put together the inspiring stories of the latest recipients of the milestone awards we gave during our anniversary: the Award for Continuing Excellence and Service (ACES) for past awardees of our different recognition programs; and the Partner in Empowerment, Advocacy, and Commitment to Excellence (PEACE) recognition to our institutional partners. When we began planning for this annual report, we knew immediately the direction we would take. We would fill its pages with more of these inspirational and empowering stories of ordinary individuals and organizations who share our vision for nation-building by promoting a culture of excellence and service among Filipinos. It is my pleasure to present the Metrobank Foundation story chronicled in these pages. As we are reminded of the success that can be achieved by ordinary individuals confronted with extraordinary circumstances and opportunities, I invite you to partake in their stories... 4 5 enjoyed the tremendous trust and support of our different partners from the academe, business, nongovernment and socio-civic organizations, national government agencies, diplomatic mission, and the media. We take great pride in these partnerships and look forward to many more years engaging our institutional partners in our shared mission of creating and sharing opportunity to help Filipinos fulfill their needs, achieve their goals, and translate their vision of a better life into reality. A Celebration of Legacy Metrobank Foundation also remembered the late President Corazon C. Aquino, who had generously shared her time and wisdom to the Foundation for many years. As Chairperson of our Board of Advisers from 1993 until her death in 2009, she had helped shape our flagship programs, inspiring us with her compassion for humanity and her resolute advocacies. As a fitting tribute to her legacy, we bequeathed the very first Distinguished Leadership Award for Service to Humanity to Mrs. Aquino. Celebrating dreamers and visionaries: Another constant source of inspiration for us in more than the last three decades is no other than our founder and chairman Dr. George S. K. Ty. A true visionary and leader, he successfully grew Metrobank as one of the best banks in the country. At the same time, he redefined business philanthropy, embracing it as a key social responsibility of Metrobank and establishing Metrobank Foundation as an embodiment of his philosophy that has always guided our CSR work: that leadership in business means leadership in community service as well. For his distinguished leadership, generous spirit, compassion, and outstanding achievements that have contributed to the growth of our country, we, together with the MBFI Board of Advisers, presidents of the Foundation’s alumni organizations, communities and organizations that have benefited from his philanthropic endeavors, conferred upon Dr. Ty the Grand Exemplar Medallion. We celebrated Dr. Ty, the late President Aquino and our ACES and PEACE awardees during our 35th anniversary event held on January 29 at the Le Pavillon, Metropolitan Park, Pasay City. We were delighted to have His Eminence Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, the Archbishop of Manila, as our guest of honor as we commemorated important milestones we recorded for more than three decades, and honored key personalities with whom we share the same dreams – for an educated workforce, for accessible medical care, for outstanding professional careers, and for a responsible and enlightened citizenry. As Metrobank Foundation starts another chapter in our history, we shall continuously strengthen and assist more Filipinos in their endeavors, raising their abilities and improving their way of life, inspiring and uplifting their spirits, so that one day, they may be empowered enough to know reality of their dreams not only for themselves, but more importantly, for our nation. 35 Anniversary th For more than the past three decades, we at Metrobank Foundation have had the privilege of discovering and recognizing some of the country’s biggest dreamers and visionaries: men and women who dared to pursue their aspirations, overcame hurdles, and succeeded. Their consuming passion and commitment to excellence made them leaders and experts in their fields; their exceptional lifework and achievements became the ground from which their predecessors now build their own dreams. They are the outstanding educators, law enforcers, soldiers, journalists and artists we have honored over the years through our excellence awards programs. They are Metrobank Foundation’s Outstanding Filipinos. To mark our 35th year anniversary, we looked back at our long roster of outstanding Filipinos and feted those who have continued to stand out in their respective professions after having been honored by 6 the Metrobank Foundation for their achievements. Embodying a lifelong commitment to the pursuit of excellence, these past awardees have been tirelessly making substantial contributions to their chosen disciplines, inspiring their peers and their communities with their competence, integrity, and professionalism. For all that they have done and accomplished, we conferred 30 of these remarkable individuals with the Metrobank Foundation Award for Continuing Excellence and Services (ACES). In recognition of their invaluable role in the success of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs and advocacies, we also bestowed upon our select collaborators the Partners in Empowerment, Advocacy and Commitment to Excellence (PEACE). Year after year, as we worked towards promoting a culture of excellence among key sectors of Philippine society and uplifting the lives of our people, we 7 Metrobank Foundation through the Years spread spread Shaping minds, empowering dreams. The Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teachers are exemplary educators who cultivate knowledge and values among the youth inspiring them to strive for excellence and serve as productive citizens. 12 13 Stumbling into a Vocation: Outstanding Teachers’ Stories Each year, the Search for Outstanding Teachers (SOT) never fails to amaze us as we discover the exceptional stories of innovation, passion, diligence, and hard work among our country’s educators. For the past 30 years, we have had the privilege of producing 336 of these outstanding teachers, among them pillars in the academe, who continue to excel in their respective fields and inspire their peers to improve their craft. As a child, Dr. Elena C. Cutiongco wanted to be a reporter but her family circumstances and a former professor, led her to teaching. In recognition of her exemplary accomplishments as a grade school English teacher and a mentor to her peers, we honored Dr. Cutiongco as one of our first Outstanding Teachers in 1985. Honed through research and scholarships, her knowledge and skills on TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) has benefitted numerous teachers and academic institutions nationwide. We also bestowed on Dr. Cutiongco the Award for Continuing Excellence and Service (ACES) in 2009. Though already retired, the consummate teacher and mentor continues to give in-service training for free to schools, write and edit textbooks, and lend her expertise to the DepEd Library Hub Technical Working Committee that evaluates supplementary materials for the DepEd library hubs all over the country. Like Dr. Cutiongco, Dr. Resurreccion B. Sadaba had a different dream growing up: to become a medical doctor. It was later in college that he discovered his passion for teaching when he realized he enjoyed feeling a sense of satisfaction when his classmates understood difficult concepts he would patiently explicate. As an environment advocate, he always emphasizes to his students the critical role of higher learning institutions in advocating responsible environmental stewardship. In 2014, we lauded Dr. Sabada’s extensive work in mangrove studies and overall contributions to the field of environmental science and protection, as one of our Outstanding Teachers. As SOT enters a new decade, we resolve to keep on bringing to the fore more uplifting and empowering stories of these remarkable educators. We commit to remain the benchmark of excellence among our teachers and continue to advocate for greater public appreciation for the indispensable role they play in our society. “Being awarded as Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teacher leveled up my professional worth several notches in the ladder of success because other bodies took notice so I was declared Outstanding Marikina Citizen in 1988, Outstanding PNS-PNC-PNU Alumna for Education in 1998, RAP Outstanding Reading Advocate in 2000, and Roosevelt College Alumni Diamond Awardee in 2005. “ National Teachers’ Month Operation MATHew MetroGold Scholarship Program 5.78% NTM Digital Campaign 729,181 audience reach The celebration encourages the different sectors of the society to pay tribute to the teaching profession in line with Presidential Proclamation No. 242 declaring September 5 to October 5 as National Teachers’ Month. 846 improvement of grades in mathematics among Operation MATHew participants scholars graduated since 1985 Operation MATHew is a Math tutorial outreach program which seeks to help underperforming Grade 5 students in selected schools by engaging past Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) winners as part of MMC’s continuing advocacy in improving quality mathematics education in the country. The Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Soldiers and Police Officers are exceptional public servants who dedicate themselves to protect the greater public while demonstrating the highest form of integrity in their personal and professional capacities. 16 17 Marching to a Different Beat: The Portrait of an Outstanding Soldier Most of us are accustomed to romanticize war: the bravery of men and women who fight and lose their lives in the battle, the sobering sight of uniformed troops saluting their fallen comrades. We watch, transfixed, as the camera roves through flag-draped caskets lined up on the tarmac, a somber and reflective music playing in the background. But for those on the frontline, this is the hard, cold reality of the job. There is no glory in the fighting, in the havoc and in the ruins – nor in the rebuilding, if only to be followed by another onslaught. There never was, and never will be unless people can discover the heroism of peacemaking. This is the kind of soldiering Technical Sergeant Benny G. Dofitas had signed up for when he entered the military: “to wear the uniform with pride and honor by helping the needy and fighting for peace and development.” In 2014, we named TSgt. Dofitas as one of The Outstanding Philippine Soldiers (TOPS) awardees. While most of his colleagues shoot with weapons and capture enemies, he shoots with a camera, capturing critical images that divulge key intelligence information for his colleagues on the ground. As the non-commissioned officer-in-charge of imagery and photo laboratory of the 206th Air Reconnaissance Squadron, TSgt Dofitas is a constant participant in reconnaissance missions, gathering the photographic and aerial video documentation that call attention to suspicious movements and help his superiors in devising appropriate strategies. We are delighted with how the TOPS citation has opened many doors for TSgt Dofitas and with our other awardees. As a result of his hardwork and dedication, he was promoted to the position of First Sergeant of the 306th Air Reconnaissance Squadron of 300th of the Air Intelligence and Security Group (AISG) of the Philippine Air Force (PAF). His photo is now displayed at the “Bulwagan ng Kagitingan” at Villamor Air Base, along with other honorees from its ranks whom the PAF considers as among the living heroes of the organization. His prize money, too, has been put to good use: TSgt Dofitas has finally realized his dream of building a house for his family. He also donated a portion to poor but deserving students from his alma mater. “As a Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Soldier, the most rewarding of all is the acknowledgment, trust and respect I received not only for myself but also for my family that no amount of money can equal.” TSgt. Benny G. Dofitas 2014 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Soldier Sharing Responsibility: Community Policing for Peace When the Foundation embarked on the Search for the Country’s Outstanding Police Officers in Service (COPS) in 2002, we knew it would be more than a gallantry award. Instead, we wanted to highlight another critical aspect of police work: community policing. Over the years, we have honored select members of our police force who have demonstrated that policing was much more than law enforcement. Like his predecessors, our 2014 COPS awardee then Police Senior Superintendent Cedrick G. Train, believes that crime prevention is a shared responsibility between the police and citizens. In particular, he considers community policing as the secret to successfully combating organized crime. Throughout his three decades in service, he has strongly relied on a network of reliable informants and hardworking volunteers from surrounding areas to provide timely information on potential criminals and render emergency assistance when needed. All the solved cases that he considers his top accomplishments—running the gamut from anti-terrorism to drug trafficking, kidnapping and gambling—have all benefited from this arrangement. Promoted to the rank of Police Chief Superintendent (Brigadier General) after winning the COPS Search, Train holds the distinction of being the third COPS awardee to be promoted to star rank. As the Deputy Regional Director for Administration of Police Regional Office 8 in Palo, Leyte, Train plays an integral part in the rehabilitation of super typhoon Yolandaaffected areas in Eastern Visayas. As PCSupt. Train’s example has shown, effective policing takes more than just an investigative mind and a commitment to uphold peace and order. There is a need also to cultivate and strengthen relations with the community through community policing strategies that build bridges for residents and the police to communicate, collaborate, and work together to build safer and more caring communities. 131 Outstanding Soldiers recognized since 1999 118 Outstanding Police Officers recognized since 2002 “This is the ultimate acknowledgement of the significant role the community plays in my solemn duty as a police officer. I offer this award to the people who supported and inspired me and most especially to the people I serve and protect.” PCSupt. Cedrick G. The Metrobank Art & Design Excellence winners are the country’s finest artists and professional designers who promote art and sustainable designs across audiences at the same time take an active role in paying it forward to their communities. 20 21 We reached another milestone in 2014 as the Metrobank Art & Design Excellence (MADE) program celebrated its 30th anniversary. In the last three decades, MADE has evolved from a purely painting competition into a comprehensive advocacy to promote Filipino artistry and creativity all aimed at cultivating a deeper understanding of our heritage and culture. While we are tremendously proud of what we have accomplished, what brings us greater satisfaction is how MADE has been serving as a career launch pad for young artists in the country, not only by recognizing their talents, but also by giving them opportunities to improve and showcase their capabilities to a wider audience. One of the many artists whom we have had the privilege of seeing grow as an artist is painter Clarence M. Eduarte. A two-time winner of MADE painting competitions – bagging the second prize in the Watercolor Category in 1997 and 1998 – Eduarte was born to be an artist. The Cagayan native always had passion for detail owing to growing up surrounded by beautiful, unspoiled nature. By capturing even Unleashing Creativity: MADE’s 30th Anniversary Making Meaning in Art: MADE Art Criticism Competition the smallest nuance of color, the subtlest of details, he allows his audience to experience the richness of our culture and traditions. As part of MADE’s 30th anniversary, we launched the Alice Guillermo Art Criticism Award and gave the honor to Loreto Francisco Bautista, a Bachelor of Arts in Art Studies student from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. He bested other entries in analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting the seven (7) winning works in our 2014 MADE painting and sculpture competitions. We believe that winning MADE will prove to be just as an enriching and fulfilling experience for our 2014 awardee, Natalio G. Alob Jr. Our Grand Prize Winner in the Sculpture Category, Alob is a promising artist who shows not only an enormous artistic talent and skill, but also a deep social awareness and sensibility. His triumphant work “Storm Surge” alludes to the catastrophe of super typhoon Yolanda’s devastation of Samar and Leyte in November 2013, and, at the same time, our kababayan’s resiliency and bayanihan spirit that shone through amid its aftermath. We are truly excited for the future of Alob and the rest of our equally promising 2014 MADE awardees. We are determined to help them and many others pursue and achieve their dreams of becoming professional artists and designers as we strengthen the program and its initiatives in the coming years. “Looking back on the years I won MADE, I have been continuously connecting with the institution and participating with their different social projects. It helped me validate my direction and career as an artist/painter.” Clarence M. Eduarte 2nd Prize Winner, Watercolor 1997 and 1998 MADE Painting Competition As a development organization, Metrobank Foundation implemented MADE’s Art Criticism competition to raise the level of our youth’s awareness and appreciation of arts and culture through application of critical thinking. We named the award after renowned art critic Alice Guillermo for her valuable contributions to Philippine arts through her literary pieces on various artworks. Guillermo, a judge in the very first Metrobank National Painting Competition in 1984, was instrumental in our Group Chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty’s decision to launch the now widely-recognized Search for Outstanding Teachers, which like MADE, celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2014. We also unveiled a special retrospective exhibition entitled “MADE in the Contemporary” during our 30th anniversary event held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). We highlighted the role of MADE in the history of Philippine contemporary art through our annual competitions and showcased 30 works of our former winners including Elmer Borlongan, Jan Leeroy New, Anton Del Castillo, Bobby Feleo, Antonio Leaño, Mark Justiniani, Andres Barrioquinto, Alfredo Esquillo, and Ivan Roxas. Together with Metrobank, we likewise launched a set of limited edition Metrobank Prepaid Cards featuring the winning works of past MADE awardees. We donated the proceeds from the production of these prepaid cards to the MADE-Network of Winners (MADE-N.O.W.) in support of “Project HeART”, an art psychosocial intervention program for disaster survivors, children in conflict with the law, and children with autism. “Through this opportunity from Metrobank Foundation, my door was opened to a lot of art collectors and events which could expose my skills on arts. The Metrobank Foundation Journalists of the Year bring relevant matters into public sphere and committed not just in the pursuit of truth but likewise in the advancement of the standards of journalism practice in the country. 24 25 Behind the Stories that Moved the Nation: The Metrobank Foundation Journalists of the Year We believe that journalists are beacons of hope. They are the nation’s eyes, ears and conscience, shining a light on important social issues through their fearless and honest storytelling. After naming the winners of our inaugural search for Journalists of the Year (JOY) in 2013, we launched the Metrobank Foundation Fellowship in Journalism in 2014. More than 3,500 students and faculty from the University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines-Los Baños, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of Baguio, Silliman University in Dumaguete City, and Ateneo de Davao University attended the lectures delivered by our 2013 JOY awardees, Jarius Bondoc, Malou Mangahas, and Jiggy Manicad who generously shared lessons and experiences in storytelling and journalism to future and aspiring journalists. and media organizations, discuss current issues, concerns, and challenges facing the profession, and provide the participants with techniques to enhance their craft. They were conducted in three different venues nationwide and covered topics such as multimedia journalism, safety in reportage and the art of interviewing. Likewise, the Senate of the Philippines passed Resolution No. 30 honoring the 2013 JOY awardees for their continuing excellence and providing greater impact on their spheres of influence in the industry. Indeed, journalists can inspire the public to actively participate in the democratic processes through their work, and thus, we are determined and committed to raise the bar of excellence in the practice of journalism in the country. Under the Fellowship, we also implemented a series of media training to provide an avenue to advance the knowledge of practicing journalists “The most important thing that I learned about multimedia journalism is that it is challenging and that telling stories should be truthful. The seminar is also a refreshing venue and an eye-opener for responsibilities that are on my shoulders. The seminar overwhelmed me with knowledge and skills needed to improve my journalism career.” Inacher A. Through our meaningful partnerships, we strengthen our commitment to empower communities and underprivileged sectors of society. 28 29 Hope Floats: Lessons from our Grants Program In 2014, we focused our grants assistance and social development partnerships in supporting rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts for communities affected by super typhoon Yolanda. The Metrobank Group, through the Metrobank Foundation and GT-Metro Foundation, donated a consolidated amount of PhP 55 million, Php 25 million of which was used to support relief operations. The other PhP 30 million was allocated for the rehabilitation of schools, health facilities, including livelihood opportunities in affected communities. As part of our continuing commitment to promote excellence and to strengthen key pillars of society, we sustained our Professorial Chairs and Fellowships Programs in 2014. These programs which began in 2000 aim to enhance, through research, the practice of professions such as law, education, medicine, and governance, as well as to educate the citizenry especially on public interest issues such as reforms and public policy. And over the past decade, we have forged partnerships with top academic institutions to further these advocacies which include the Philippine Judicial Academy (law); University of Santo Tomas and; and Ateneo de Manila University (public service and governance). Boat-less, not hopeless The islands of Leyte and Panay were amongst those that stood directly along the path of the storm, causing their coastal areas to suffer extensive damage. Thousands lost their livelihood, among them fisherfolks who lost their boats to the typhoon. Together with Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation, Bantayan Back to Sea Project, Negrense Volunteers for Change, and TOPSOLDIERS – the alumni organization of Metrobank Foundation’s Outstanding Philippine Soldiers, we initiated a boat-building project in 2014. To date, we have turned over a total of 506 fishing boats to fishermen in 13 municipalities in the Visayas, amounting to PhP 10 million. The Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation began providing boats in 2010 for children in Zamboanga City who swim half a mile to get to their school. After Yolanda, the organization focused on helping people recover their livelihood by providing new boats to fishermen in devastated areas. Our friends and partners from the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation and those from 39 other NGOs, peoples’ groups and LGUs joined us during our annual Anniversary Grants Turnover Ceremony held last September at the Metrobank Plaza. During the event, we likewise paid a special tribute to our social development partners that helped implement Metrobank Group’s “Helping Hands” relief operations and medical missions in the immediate aftermath of Yolanda. Indeed, there is so much work to be done. But if there is anything our kababayans from Eastern Visayas had taught us, it is that hope floats. A long and difficult road to recovery and reconstruction may be ahead of us, but we are committed to do our part and work together with our development partners to help our kababayans rebuild their lives, homes, and communities. In the past year, we continued to reap recognition for our programs and advocacies, staying true to our mission of being one of the leading corporate foundations in the country. In recognition of their outstanding contributions and excellence in their respective fields that played a big role in the hospital’s growth and sustainability, we introduced the MDH Exemplar Awards during our anniversary which we celebrated last December 14, 2014 with the theme “58 years of Expertise in Health Care”. We hope that the recognition they received would continue to inspire and motivate not only the awardees, but also their colleagues to perform their jobs better.
