Math Facts In A Snap!
First graders are learning a variety of strategies and tools to
solve addition and subtraction problems: counting on and
back, doubles and near doubles, making a ten, using counters,
number lines, and drawing pictures.
However, it is important to memorize basic facts at this time as
well. We are starting with the attached list of facts:
• doubles to sums of 20
• sums for numbers 0 to 9 added to 10
• sums to 12 with 0 - 9.
Once these facts are mastered (known in a snap!), we will
continue with the other addition facts to 20. Subtraction
facts will be much easier to learn when the addition facts are
firmly known.

Tips
Practice several times a week with just a few facts.
Make it fun! Play games.
Flashcards are fine to use.
It's good to see facts both horizontally and vertically.
Practice orally and written.
Games
Memory
Index cards with the sums and cards with facts (no sums). Make a match with
fact and sum.
Variation: Only fact cards: fact (4+2) matched with (5 + 1), both have sums of
6.
I Have... You Have
Partner A has 6 to 8 fact cards turned face up (sums not seen). Partner B calls
out a sum: "I have 9, you have...".
Partner A picks correct card and says "I have 5 + 4."

War Card Game
Remove Joker and face cards. Player A draws a 6 and Player B (student) draws
a 3. If the sum is said in a snap by Player B, he keeps the cards even though his
number was lower. Later on, give the face cards a value of 10 to practice
higher facts.
