If you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of Australia who will be 20 years of age or over before 1 March 2015, the following information applies to you. There are separate external examinations for stage 2 and stage 3 units in all WACE courses. To ensure the best possible chance of success in university studies, students intending to study WACE courses DISCLAIMER PARTICIPATING UNIVERSITIES UNIVERSITY APPLICATION PROCEDURES STEVE HOATH TISC Executive Officer requirements should be directed to the individual university(ies) concerned. Curtin University Edith Cowan University Murdoch University The University of Western Australia Information about applying to the universities and admission to undergraduate courses will be sent to mature age students at their schools in August 2014. Mature age applicants not attending a school can access this information from TISC’s website. particular course requirements, timetables and general course information should be directed to the university(ies) concerned. The closing date for applications without incurring a late fee is normally the end of September. The universities will make offers of admission in the second half of January and in early February. You can obtain further information about application procedures from TISC. Enquiries about mid-year entry, external studies, postgraduate studies, TISC and the participating universities cannot accept liability for any incorrect advice received from sources other than TISC, the universities or the universities’ officially appointed agents. You need to apply for admission through TISC if you: are an Australian citizen, are a New Zealand citizen, have been approved/granted permanent resident status. Australian If you are not one of the above, you are an international student and you need to apply direct to the International Office at the relevant university. You may qualify for university entrance by: or on the basis of results obtained in STAT; or recognised tertiary qualifications (contact the individual universities for further information); or such other qualifications and/or experience as an individual university may accept. (Contact the individual university for details.) MATURE AGE INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS This information is correct as at 1 December 2014. It is relevant only for admission in 2015 and is subject to change without notice. The universities reserve the right to change the content and/or method of presentation and/or the method of assessment of any units of study, to withdraw any unit of study or program which they offer, to impose limitations on enrolment in any unit or program, and/or vary arrangements for any program. Enquiries regarding university admissions Application will be via TISC’s website. MATURE AGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS are strongly recommended to attempt stage 3 units (and in the case of mathematics courses, units 3C/3D) in Year 12, if they are capable of doing so. For the remainder of this publication, in the context of Year 12 study, the term course(s) means both WACE course(s) and past TEE subjects. meeting the normal school leaver requirements of applicants with a 4 course ATAR (see the 2015 Admission Requirements for School Leavers information available on TISC’s website, but note that mature age applicants are exempt from the WACE requirement); or meeting the mature age entry requirements based on WACE examinations and university specific requirements (see pages 3-7); If you are not an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or a permanent resident of Australia, you can qualify for admission by: meeting the normal WA school leaver requirements (see the 2015 Admission Requirements for School Leavers information available on TISC’s website). Mature age international applicants are exempt from the WACE requirement, or achieving an acceptable level of performance in the Western Australian Universities’ Foundation Program (WAUFP), or on the basis of recognised prior tertiary qualifications (contact the individual universities for further information), or such other qualifications and/or experience as an individual university may accept. (Contact the individual university for details.) International applicants or temporary residents who sit STAT can only use the results to supplement other entry qualifications or to prove English competence. Further information about courses and fees is available from the universities direct. 2 MATURE AGE UNIVERSITY ADMISSION BASED ON THE SPECIAL TERTIARY ADMISSIONS TEST (STAT) The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is used by the four public universities in WA as part of their admissions procedure for mature age applicants. It comprises a written English test and a multiple choice test. STAT does not test knowledge of specific academic subjects, but instead tests a range of competencies that are considered important for success in university study, such as the ability to understand and think critically about issues. As a result, no particular preparation is required to sit STAT, although some preparation courses are available. inferences from a variety of material in the areas of humanities and social sciences (verbal component) and mathematics and science (quantitative component). In addition to an overall score, scores are calculated separately for the verbal and quantitative components. STAT Written English test is a one-hour test designed to measure your ability to communicate effectively and to develop logical argument in written English. Candidates are asked to write short essays on two different topics: Part A is a public affairs issue that invites argument, while Part B requires you to write from a more personal point of view. Each section gives a choice of four topics. The tests are conducted on advertised dates at venues in the Perth metropolitan area and in country centres. Further information is available from TISC. Booking forms can be obtained from TISC or downloaded from the TISC website at www.tisc.edu.au. STAT Multiple Choice is a two-hour test with 70 multiple choice questions. The questions test the ability to reason, comprehend, interpret and make MATURE AGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS BASED ON WACE EXAMINATIONS General requirements for mature age entry using 2 WACE courses are as follows. Refer to the university sections on pages 8-24 for more specific requirements. As a mature age applicant with a 2 course ATAR, you will normally be required to: As entry to most university courses is competitive, above average marks will usually be required. Please refer to the universities’ individual sections for specific details on using STAT as a basis for application. Note: Some universities have prerequisite WACE course requirements for their courses, which you will need to satisfy for your preferred course of study. STAT may satisfy some prerequisite requirements. adjusted combined marks at stage 3 will be increased by 15 marks per course relative to the adjusted combined marks at stage 2. After this, the marks in both stages are merged and scaled using Average Marks Scaling. No increment will be applied if a course is only examined at stage 3. Mathematics and Mathematics: Specialist 1. demonstrate English language competence – see below for details; and 2. obtain a sufficiently high Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)/Selection Rank for entry to a particular university and/or course (see below). (Edith Cowan University may not require an ATAR for some pathways); and Mathematics (with four unit pairs 2A/2B; 2C/2D; 3A/3B and 3C/3D) and Mathematics: Specialist (with two unit pairs 3A/3B and 3C/3D) have six possible examinations. To encourage students to attempt the highest level of mathematics they are capable of, the following increments will be applied before scaling: Mathematics 3. satisfy any prerequisites or special requirements necessary for entry to particular courses. Adjusted combined unscaled marks for 2C/2D + 10 THE AUSTRALIAN TERTIARY ADMISSION RANK (ATAR) Adjusted combined unscaled marks for 3A/3B + 20 A mature age Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) provides a means of ranking students for selection for university admission. Applicants for each university course are ranked in order of merit based on their ATAR. Adjusted combined unscaled marks for 3C/3D + 30 Mathematics: Specialist The ATAR ranges between zero and 99.95 and is derived from the Tertiary Entrance Aggregate (TEA). Adjusted combined unscaled marks for 3A/3B – no increment Adjusted combined unscaled marks for 3C/3D + 15 SCALING AND INCREMENTS All course results will be scaled to ensure fairness to all students. Adjusted combined unscaled marks for 2A/2B – no increment Further information on the marks adjustment process is available at www.tisc.edu.au. CALCULATION OF THE TEA Unless otherwise specified, references to scaled scores in this brochure mean the final scaled score obtained in either stage 2 or stage 3 of a WACE course, or in a past TEE subject. The Average Marks Scaling process is used to scale marks obtained in stage 2 or stage 3 of a course. For a full explanation and diagram of the process, see Marks Adjustment Process for University Admission at www.tisc.edu.au. The ATAR is derived from the Tertiary Entrance Aggregate (TEA). Courses which can be used in the ATAR are listed below. WACE courses except Mathematics: Specialist All scaled scores used must be from 2014. There are unacceptable course combinations whereby scores in both courses cannot both be used (see explanation under Unacceptable Course Combinations below). A LOTE bonus of 10% of a LOTE scaled score is added to the aggregate of the best two scaled scores multiplied by 2. If more than one LOTE has been sat, only one (the best) LOTE scaled score can be used as the LOTE bonus. Mathematics and As an incentive for students to study courses at the more demanding stage 3 if they are capable of doing so, an increment will be applied to stage 3 marks. After standardisation and statistical moderation have occurred, the combined unscaled marks at stage 3 of a course and the combined unscaled marks at stage 2 of the course are placed on a common scale of adjusted combined marks for the course. The A Mature Age TEA will be calculated by adding a student’s best two scaled scores and multiplying by 2, plus 10% of that student’s best LOTE scaled score, if any, based on the following rules: 3 MATURE AGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS BASED ON WACE EXAMINATIONS In calculating the scaled score, equal weight is given to the final school mark and the final examination mark, except where courses are taken on a private basis (see explanation under Courses Studied on a Private Basis below). All scores are scaled/moderated before they are used for university purposes. The maximum TEA is 410. Please note that some university courses have specific prerequisite courses. (Refer to the individual university sections for details of these requirements.) Music Outdoor Education Philosophy and Ethics Physical Education Studies Physics Plant Production Systems Politics and Law Psychology Religion and Life Visual Arts NOTE: It is not necessary for a result in English or Literature or EALD to be included in the ATAR, however you may need to rely on this course to prove English Competence. 1. There may be some additional interstate language courses* and examinations available in WA schools in 2014, which may be counted in the ATAR. Contact the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for details of availability. Please refer to the individual university sections for additional information. 2. *indicates a language other than English (LOTE) course. TEA TO ATAR UNACCEPTABLE COURSE COMBINATIONS TISC will construct a table to convert your TEA to an ATAR. The table takes into account the number of students with a TEA and the number of people of Year 12 school leaving age in the state. This table is constructed annually. You cannot use the following course combinations in calculating your ATAR. It may be possible to take both courses but the result in only one may be used to calculate your ATAR. COURSES WHICH MAY BE USED TO FORM THE ATAR NOTE: Students studying WACE courses are strongly recommended to attempt stage 3 units, if they are capable of doing so. If you wish to sit courses on a private basis, you must enrol with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority. It is possible that not all courses will be available to private candidates. Your scaled score in courses you sit privately will be based on your course examination score only. SELECTION RANKS For most courses, 2014 Year 12 students will be selected for admission to university in 2015 on the basis of their ATAR. However, some universities assign students who are eligible for alternative entry pathways a Selection Rank that is higher than their ATAR. For these students, selection into courses at the university concerned is based on this enhanced Selection Rank. Eligibility for the entry pathways is based on specified criteria. TISC advises eligible students at the time of the WACE results/ATAR release in late December, via the Universities Admission Advice Letter (UAAL). The appropriate Selection Rank is automatically applied for offer rounds. For 2015 admission, Curtin University has the StepUp to Curtin Pathway, Murdoch University has the RISE Pathway and UWA has the Broadway Alternative Entry Pathway. For further details about any of these pathways, see the individual university section on TISC’s website. 4 MATURE AGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS BASED ON WACE EXAMINATIONS PREREQUISITES CONCESSIONS Make sure that you satisfy the prerequisites for admission to the university course(s) of your choice. Prerequisites are courses or special requirements which must be successfully completed for entry to particular university courses. Curtin University Edith Cowan University Murdoch University Generally a scaled score of 50 or more in stage 3 of a WACE course is required for prerequisite purposes, however mathematics prerequisites differ across university courses. See individual university course entries for details. Note that where a prerequisite is listed as ‘At least Mathematics 2C/2D’, Mathematics 3A/3B or Mathematics 3C/3D will also be accepted. Murdoch University does not require applicants to have undertaken specific prerequisite courses and instead provides introductory units to enable its students to become skilled in specific areas in which they may be lacking. For some university courses the special requirements may include bridging/special course units, interviews, auditions, folio presentations, manual dexterity tests, aptitude tests, fitness requirements, etc. Detailed information is available from the individual universities. An outline of the prerequisites and preferred courses for university courses at the four participating universities in Western Australia begins on page 8. COMPETENCE IN ENGLISH For university admission purposes, usually you demonstrate competence in English by achieving the prescribed performance in one of the WACE courses: English, Literature or English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EALD), or from competence met in the previously offered subjects: TEE English, TEE English Literature or TEE English as a Second Language (ESL). You can meet the competence in English requirement with results obtained in any calendar year. English as an Additional Language/Dialect can only be taken by students who meet eligibility criteria set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority. ENGLISH; LITERATURE; ENGLISH ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE/DIALECT AS AN (a) If you have not met the competency in English requirement for one of these three universities, that university will concede competence in English to you if you have achieved a standardised moderated numeric school assessment or standardised numeric examination assessment of at least 55 in stage 2 or stage 3 English or Literature. For English as an Additional Language/Dialect a standardised moderated written school assessment or standardised written exam mark of at least 55 is required. b) If you have not met the requirement (a) above for one of the above three universities, but you have achieved an ATAR/Selection Rank above the minimum specified annually by the universities, then you may demonstrate your competence in English for the above three universities by sitting the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) early in January. The University of Western Australia (a) If you have not met the competency in English requirement for The University of Western Australia, The University of Western Australia will concede competence in English to you if you have achieved a standardised moderated numeric school assessment or standardised numeric examination assessment of at least 60 in stage 2 or stage 3 English or Literature. For English as an Additional Language/Dialect a standardised moderated written school assessment or standardised written exam mark of at least 60 is required. (b) If you have not met the requirement (a) above for The University of Western Australia, but you have achieved an ATAR/Selection Rank above the minimum specified annually by the universities, then you may demonstrate your competence in English for The University of Western Australia by sitting the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) early in January. Curtin University Murdoch University The University of Western Australia TEE ENGLISH OR TEE ENGLISH LITERATURE OR TEE ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) SAT PREVIOUSLY You must achieve a scaled score of at least 50, in stage 2 or stage 3. All Universities Edith Cowan University You must achieve a scaled score of at least 50 in stage 2 or stage 3; or a letter grade of A, B or C in two units of English (2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 3A or 3B); or English as an Additional Language/Dialect or Literature (2A, 2B, 3A or 3B) studied in Year 12. TEE English, TEE English Literature and TEE English as a Second Language (ESL) are no longer offered. However, if you have satisfied a university’s competence in English requirement previously via results in TEE English, TEE English Literature or TEE English as a Second Language (ESL), then you have satisfied that university’s current competence in English requirement. SPECIAL TERTIARY ADMISSIONS TEST (STAT) All Universities English, Literature or English as an Additional Language/Dialect sat on a private basis (if available) can be used to meet all universities’ competency in English requirement (see Courses Studied on a Private Basis on page 4). In this case, you must achieve a scaled score of at least 50, in stage 2 or stage 3. If you have sat STAT before February 2010, a mark of at least 145 in the Written English test satisfies the competence in English requirements for Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and Murdoch University. The University of Western Australia requires a mark of 150 in the Verbal component of the Multiple Choice section AND a mark of 145 in the Written English test for STAT sat before February 2010 to satisfy competence in English requirements. If you sit STAT after February 2010, a mark of at least 140 in the Written English test satisfies the competence in English requirements for Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and Murdoch 5 UNIVERSITY SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS University. The University of Western Australia requires a mark of 140 in the Verbal component of the Multiple Choice section AND a mark of 140 in the Written English test for STAT sat after February 2010 to satisfy competence in English requirements. CURTIN UNIVERSITY ADMISSION BASED ON STAT To be eligible for entry to the university you will need: STAT MC a minimum score of 145 (if sat before February 2010) or 135 (if sat after February 2010) and STAT WE a minimum score of 145 (if sat before February 2010) or 140 (if sat after February 2010) IMPORTANT: The scores for STAT WE and at least one component of STAT MC will need to equate to a notional ATAR equal to or greater than the cut-off rank for the course(s) for which you are applying. STAT is not suitable for all courses; and some courses require specific components of STAT MC (ie Verbal or Quantitative, or both). Check pages 8-12 to see if STAT can be used for entry to the course(s) you are interested in. All applicants for admission to Curtin are required to provide separate evidence of satisfactory performance in an approved test of English in addition to their qualifications. Attainment of 145 (if sat before February 2010) or 140 (if sat after February 2010) in the STAT WE will satisfy Curtin’s English competency requirement. ADMISSION BASED ON A TWO COURSE ATAR See requirements on pages 3-5. APPLICANTS WHO SAT WACE COURSES IN A PRIOR YEAR Applicants may combine scaled scores obtained in the previous four years with current year results to form a normal school leaver ATAR. The higher of the school leaver ATAR or mature age ATAR will be used for admission purposes. Applicants who sat WACE/TEE in a previous year and did not qualify for admission will be reassessed under the current entry requirements. EDITH COWAN UNIVERSITY ADMISSION BASED ON STAT To be eligible for entry to the university you will need: STAT MC a minimum score of 115 (if sat before February 2010) or 110 (if sat after February 2010) for either component (see below) and STAT WE a minimum score of 145 (if sat before February 2010) or 140 (if sat after February 2010) It is important to sit both the Multiple Choice and the Written English tests in the one STAT year. The score for STAT WE and at least one component of STAT MC will need to equate to a notional ATAR equal to or greater than the cut-off rank for the course(s) for which you are applying. Courses which have a science or mathematics prerequisite require a mark of at least 145 (if sat before February 2010) or 135 (if sat after February 2010) in the Quantitative component of STAT MC. ECU does not accept STAT for meeting the essential prerequisites for entry into any of the Engineering courses, the Bachelor of Aviation or the Bachelor of Technology (Aeronautical). For some courses, satisfactory auditions, interviews or submission of past work are essential admission requirements. All applicants for admission to Edith Cowan University are required to provide evidence of satisfactory performance in an approved test of English in addition to their qualifications. Attainment of 145 (if sat before February 2010) or 140 (if sat after February 2010) in the STAT Written English will satisfy Edith Cowan University's English competency requirement. Applicants who sat WACE courses/TEE subjects in a previous year and did not obtain a rank sufficiently high to be considered for entry will be assessed by the university in terms of the minimum entry ranks for the current year. PORTFOLIO ENTRY COWAN UNIVERSITY PATHWAY TO EDITH In addition to the requirements outlined above, ECU offers an additional pathway for entry by mature age students. Applicants should submit supporting portfolio documentation directly to ECU. For further information access www.reachyourpotential.com.au. MURDOCH UNIVERSITY ATAR FOR VETERINARY SCIENCE Mature age applicants who have undertaken no postsecondary study and want to study Veterinary Science as Standard Undergraduate (school leaver) applicants are advised that they should study four courses in the one year. Applicants applying on the basis of fewer than four courses are ineligible for the Standard Undergraduate (school leaver) category and will be considered as Other Undergraduate applicants (non-school leaver). They should note that there are a limited number of places available in the Other Undergraduate (non-school leaver) applicant category and that they are competing for a place along with applicants who may have completed a year or more of tertiary study. ADMISSION BASED ON STAT Prospective students who do not have any evidence of recent academic attainment to support their application are encouraged to sit STAT Multiple Choice and STAT Written English. To be eligible for most courses you will need a mark of at least 145 (if sat before February 2010) or 135 (if sat after February 2010) for either component of the Multiple Choice test and a mark of at least 145 (if sat before February 2010) or 140 (if sat after February 2010) for the Written English test. Achieving the academic minimum does not guarantee admission to a particular course. Due to competition for places, individual courses may cut higher than the academic minimum. 6 UNIVERSITY SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS In addition to sitting STAT, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a brief personal statement in support of their application for university admission. This statement should be approximately one page and should outline the candidate’s reasons for selecting the chosen degree program and explain why he/she believes the degree will be successfully completed if a place is offered. It may include a brief resume of any occupational, educational or personal experience which indicates a capacity for successful tertiary study. Applicants should note that admission to courses where quotas restrict the number of new students may not always be available on the basis of STAT results. STAT is not considered to be a suitable qualification for entry to Chiropractic, Law or Veterinary Science. ADMISSION BASED ON A TWO COURSE ATAR Both sections of STAT must be taken. This method of entry is only available to those who have never undertaken any tertiary-level study. Minimum requirements: STAT Multiple Choice a mark of at least 150 (if sat before February 2010) or 140 (if sat after February 2010) in Verbal Component and STAT Written English a mark of at least 155 (if sat before February 2010) or 160 (if sat after February 2010) This also satisfies the university’s English language competency requirement. See requirements on pages 3-5. ADMISSION BASED ON A TWO COURSE ATAR APPLICANTS WHO SAT WACE COURSES IN A PRIOR YEAR Applicants may combine scaled scores obtained in the previous four years with current year results to form a normal school leaver ATAR. The higher of the school leaver ATAR or mature age ATAR will be used for admission purposes. Applicants who sat WACE/TEE in a previous year and did not qualify for admission will be reassessed under the current entry requirements. MEDIA AND CREATIVE PORTFOLIO ENTRY TO MURDOCH UNIVERSITY In addition to the requirements outlined above, Murdoch University offers a portfolio pathway for admission to the Bachelor of Arts degrees in Communication and Media Studies, English and Creative Writing, Games Art and Design, Interactive Digital Design, Journalism, Photography, Public Relations, Radio, Screen Production, Sound, Theatre and Drama, and Web Communication. Students must satisfy Murdoch’s English requirement, as outlined above, and should apply through TISC but submit their portfolios directly to the Student Centre at Murdoch University. Portfolios will be assessed by academic staff in the relevant discipline. For more information see www.murdoch.edu.au. THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA The University of Western Australia offers several entry routes for Mature Age applicants. Not all entry routes are appropriate for all courses. Some majors have particular requirements. Potential Mature Age applicants are strongly encouraged to consult the Admissions Centre for advice on the most appropriate entry route for them prior to enrolling in any WACE course. ADMISSION BASED ON STAT This entry route is International Students not available to Results in STAT Multiple Choice (Verbal component) and STAT Written English test may be used for entry to a range of degrees. Some courses may also require a pass in Mathematics 2C/2D (or equivalent). To be eligible for entry into Semester One under this route, STAT must be taken by November of the previous year. Entry under this route is extremely competitive, and applicants should be aware that meeting the minimum requirement as listed below is not a guarantee of selection. As in all entry routes, the stronger the results, the greater the likelihood of being offered a place. This entry route is International Students not available to See requirements on pages 3-5. ADMISSION BASED ON A FOUR COURSE ATAR This entry route is available to International Students The admission requirements for mature age applicants who elect to take four WACE courses are the same as those for school leavers, as published in TISC’s 2015 Admissions Requirements for School Leavers brochure (available on the TISC website), except that mature age applicants are exempt from the ‘WACE’ requirement. The normal English language competence requirement must be met by the achievement of a final scaled score of at least 50 in either stage 2 or stage 3 English or Literature. Eligible candidates for whom English is a second language may obtain a scaled score of 50 or more in stage 2 or stage 3 English as an Additional Language/Dialect, a suitable level of achievement in English as a Second Language (achieved in a previous year) or another approved test of English. Applicants who have met all other admission requirements and not achieved competency in English will be invited to sit an alternative test, for example STAT (if not already sat in the current STAT year) or IELTS early in January. All prerequisites must also be satisfied for entry based on a four course ATAR. For prerequisite information refer to the University’s prospectus or the prerequisites listing on pages 20-24 of this brochure (or separately on the TISC website). Course scores that contribute to a four course ATAR may be accumulated over five consecutive years. APPLICANTS WHO SAT WACE COURSES IN A PRIOR YEAR Those applying for courses on the basis of a TES/TER gained prior to 2010 will be considered on an individual basis by Faculty Selection Committees. MATURE-AGE ACCESS PROGRAM In August 2008 The University of Western Australia introduced a trial program providing provisional entry to a range of degrees for mature-aged students with little or no previous study. Interested applicants should make contact with The University of Western Australia Admissions Centre for further information. 7 CURTIN UNIVERSITY – COURSE PREREQUISITES The following list outlines the prerequisite and recommended WACE courses/TEE subjects for entry to Curtin courses in 2015. Additional non-Year 12 requirements are also outlined. To satisfy the prerequisite requirements, a scaled score of 50 or more is required, unless otherwise specified. For 2015 admission, scaled scores in courses other than where specified for Mathematics must be at stage 3. Unless otherwise specified, scaled scores in desirable courses are recommended to be at stage 3. Murdoch understands that students do not always make up their minds about the career they would like until much later than Year 10 and so Murdoch has ‘make-up’ units available in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics for students who have not studied, or who have not performed well in, these subjects at Year 12 level. We do list some recommended courses because a strong mathematical or chemistry background is an advantage in any science-based university course. However, they are purely a recommendation and do not affect entry. Please note that for entry to all Murdoch’s courses you must fulfil the University’s requirements on English competence.
