I want to welcome Barbara Anderson as UCSB Retirees Association CoPresident with me for the 2014-15 academic year. Barbara has been an active board member since her retirement; in fact, she served as President for five years prior to my Presidency service. The UCSB Retirees Board of Directors lost one of our members on June 14. Judy Klinge was a very active board member who formerly served as Treasurer and then on the Program Committee. Judy will be sorely missed. We had lots of fun at the annual Retirees Association membership BBQ in June, at the Elk’s Lodge. The BBQ crew cooked up some wonderful chicken, and of course, the delicious potluck dishes brought by the retirees made a feast. Thank you to all that participated in the raffle and to those that donated items. As you are aware, any funds raised go towards the UCSB Retirees Scholarship fund. The 2014-2015 slate of Board of Directors was voted in at the BBQ during the brief business meeting. To see the names and positions of the board, see page 5 of this newsletter. I have enjoyed the privilege of working with a wonderful Board of Directors and meeting many of the creative and enjoyable retirees at our functions since joining the Retirees Association in 2009 - the last four serving as President. Although I will continue to be active on the Board of Directors, I will be stepping down as President of the Retirees Association at the end of 2014/2015 term. To assist the Nominating Committee, the board approved Co-Presidency of Barbara Anderson and me for 2014/2015. In the meantime, the Nominating Committee is currently seeking a President-Elect, a new position for the UCSB Retiree Association. President-Elect will work with the Co-Presidents to learn the job of the Presidency, and then step into the President position for the 2015-16 term. If you feel this might be something you would like to do, please let me know. The Board is working on programming for the new season. To start off the Fall Quarter breakfast meetings, on September 17 local Genealogist Cari Thomas will talk about getting started on researching your ancestry, and the new Santa Barbara Genealogy Society’s Sayhun Library. UCSB Health Care Facilitator, Laura Morgan, will have a presentation on the 2015 benefits update at our October 15 breakfast meeting. We are working on November’s speaker at this time. Watch for forthcoming information. Hope to see you in the fall. In this program, excess produce is harvested and picked up by the program volunteers and then distributed to people in need who can use it. To see more go to: http://foodbanksbc.org/backyardbounty.html. If you are interested in volunteering, harvests take place week-day mornings as well as occasional evenings and Saturdays. All ages between 7 (with parental supervision) and 77 are welcome as there is always something to do that fits your abilities. Volunteers are the backbone of the Foodbank. In 2013, volunteers provided nearly 20,000 hours of volunteer service. This support saves thousands of dollars and allows the Foodbank to provide more resources to the community.
