Transporting Your Bike
M
There are several places from which you can hire a bicycle.
Some will also hire out accessories, such as bike carrier
racks for cars and bicycle trailers. Many bike shops sell used
bikes and this may prove more economical than hiring. For
further information visit: www.cyclingaustralia.com
c Bikes on trains
Bikes are not allowed on trains during the peak travel hours
of 7:00am - 9:00am and 4:30pm - 6:30pm. Folding bikes
contained in a bag are permitted on all services at all times.
c Bikes on buses
Bicycles are not permitted on Transperth bus services
within the Perth metropolitan area.
For more information about taking bikes on Perth public
transport visit: www.transperth.wa.gov.au
c Bikes on taxis
Standard taxi sedans will not have a bike rack attached
however you may be able to remove your bike’s wheel and
fit it in the boot. Some fleets have station wagons and minivans that can be requested in advance to accommodate a
bicycle and luggage.
c Carrying bikes on or in hire/rental cars
Local hire car companies do not supply vehicles with bicycle
carrier racks. Some allow you to attach your own rack but
you will be liable for any damage. Some fleets have station
wagons and mini-vans that can be requested in advance to
accommodate a bicycle and luggage.

Swan River Rides
Swan Valley Rides
The Swan River Rides are aimed at visitors who like to ride
predominantly on shared paths through scenic parklands
and along the river foreshore, perhaps to visit a picnic spot
or playground areas. There is some on road riding required
in getting from the train station to the river, but these roads
are generally wide, relatively quiet or designed for slow
moving vehicles.
Featuring a section of the Swan Valley Heritage Cycle Trail,
the rides in the Swan Valley are aimed at visitors interested
in the wineries, breweries, restaurants and art galleries on
offer in Perth’s Valley of Taste.
The Swan Valley Rides are relatively flat but are longer and
more suitable for adults or families with older children who
have experience at riding on the road with traffic.
The four individual Swan River Rides are relatively short,
and can easily be joined together to provide longer rides.

Perth Hills Rides
The Perth Hills Rides offer countryside views, native
bushland surroundings and a variety of road and mountain
biking experiences.
Riding through the Perth Hills is physically demanding.
These rides are aimed at cyclists who have experience
riding relatively long distances over hilly terrain.
When planning your ride, please note that there are no train
stations at Mundaring or Kalamunda and only limited public
transport options. There are also limited opportunities
for obtaining food or water, and mobile phone coverage
is patchy, so riders should prepare before they undertake
these rides.
The Perth Hills Road Rides combined create a single loop
that can be ridden by fit riders in a morning or an afternoon.
Please note that the inclines are quite steep and the road
surfaces are generally rough chip seals rather than smooth
asphalt. Riders who reach Mundaring Weir would find it
equally as difficult to turn around and head back to the
nearest station at Midland as it would be to complete the
loop via Kalamunda.

Katharine Street becomes Clayton Road near the intersection
with Samson Street. Continue down Clayton Road until you
come to the roundabout with Scott Street.
Turn left at the roundabout onto Scott Street and take the
first right onto Marriott Road. Continue up Marriott Road
for 500m, and turn right at the next roundabout onto
Coulston Road. The road here continues upwards at a steady
gradient following Darlington Brook on the left. After 1.5km
take the fourth road on the right, Sandover Road. After
approximately 30m turn left onto Pine Terrace. Follow Pine
Terrace round past Darlington Park until you reach the
T-junction with Owen Road. Turn left onto Owen Road and
travel through the centre of Darlington Village past shops
and the Darlington Oval.
Owen Road turns to the right then left and ends in a

From Mundaring Sculpture Park, facing towards

the heritage hotel opposite, turn right onto Jacoby Street.
Take a right turn off the first roundabout and at the next
roundabout turn left onto Mundaring Weir Road. You will
immediately find yourself in a forest setting as you ride
along towards the Mundaring Weir, passing the Mundaring
Recreation Ground on your right that has a great BMX bike
track for children.
On your right you will also pass a signpost for Beelu National
Park. Formerly Mundaring National Park, this beautiful 3000
hectare park has only recently had its name changed to
reflect its Aboriginal significance. The Beelu (or river peoples)
had winter camps in the Mundaring and Kalamunda hills.
As you travel along the Mundaring Weir Road notice several
recreation sites including Fred Jacoby Park, which contains
one of the largest living English Oak trees in Western Australia.
A boardwalk takes visitors under the canopy of this 140 year
old heritage listed tree. After 6km travel straight on at the
roundabout into Weir Village Road.

Deviation to Perth Hills National Parks Centre
At the roundabout of Mundaring Weir Road, Weir Village Road
and Allen Road, turn left and head down Allen Road for 500m
until you reach the Perth Hills National Parks Centre. Open daily
from 10:00am - 4:00pm, it is a great source of information on
recreational opportunities within the area and offers forest
activities, camping facilities and refreshments. An outdoor
cinema is open during the summer months and is located
opposite to the centre.
Continue along Weir Village Road and turn right into Hall
Road beside the historical hotel on the left and the Mundaring
Weir Gallery building on the right. (Keep an eye out for the
trailhead of the Kep Track (multiuse) and various walk trail
markers located at the front of the Mundaring Weir Gallery.)
Deviation to Mundaring Weir
Continue along Weir Village Road taking the lower road section
which passes at the front of the historic hotel where the road
winds downhill to a dead end. From here you can view the
northern aspect of the Mundaring Weir.
Completed in 1903, the Weir is the start of the water pipeline
that pumped water to the Kalgoorlie goldfields, some 700km
inland. Walk across the massive concrete Weir wall and marvel
at the great volume of water it holds back. You can access the
No 1 Pump Station (entry fee applies) by negotiating a series
of steep steps. At the No 1 Pump Station visitors can gain an
insight into the history of the pipeline and view an original
steam engine and boilers. This point also marks the start of
the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail, a 650km drive trail from
Mundaring Weir to Kalgoorlie. Return the way you came and
turn left at Hall Road to travel beside a historical hotel on the
left and the Mundaring Weir Gallery on the right.
Turn left at the T-junction with Mundaring Weir Road to
continue towards Kalamunda. The main entry to No. 1 Pump
Station is to the left. The road drops down to a bridge before
it starts to rise up for a long climb.
50
Further along this road you will pass the turn off to the
Golden View Lookout at South Ledge on your right.
Deviation to Golden View Lookout
The Golden View Lookout situated in Beelu National Park
provides panoramic views over Lake CY O’Connor, the
Mundaring Weir and the Helena River Valley.
Past Ashendon Road the road starts to level out and slowly
drops down as you take a long descent into Piesse Gully
passing local picnic spots including Gungin Gully and The
Dell.
Deviation via Paulls Valley Road
Turn right and travel down Paulls Valley Road for 600m to visit
a camel farm and tea rooms.
Once over the Piesse Gully Bridge the road starts to climb
again and the scenery changes from forest to residential as you
arrive in the outskirts of Kalamunda. At the top of the hill is a
roundabout with Railway Road and the Northern Terminus of
the internationally renowned walk trail, the Bibbulmun Track.
Turn right at the roundabout to travel past a historic hotel
before taking the first road on the left into Haynes Street and
the heart of Kalamunda Village. Stroll by the boutique shops,
cafés and visit the Kalamunda History Village.
At this point you have two options available to you.

Zig Zag Scenic Drive
The Zig Zag, a curvy, narrow one way road snakes down
Gooseberry Hill though four very tight switchback corners. The
ride provides breathtaking views of Perth City in the distance.
