Promo / Commercial Kakophonos As of Late… (Background Music: “Hint of Dawn” performed by Kendra Springer) As of late, I’m now living in another town in southern NJ if you don’t recall I moved since the last episode and life wasn’t allowing me to do much else during that time. Thank you to everyone for your well wishes in regards to mine and Tara’s recent move. Things, I guess went as smoothly as they could have. We had a lot of help from our friends (Joe Cocker) which was great and the weather on the weekend of the February 24th wasn’t ideal, but that didn’t stop us, that’s for sure. The transition took all weekend to do, but it was well worth it as we are now living in a better situation and life is feeling less stressful and seems to contain a hint of opportunity and growth which is nice. The final moments in our previous place seemed surreal. I had gotten so hung up in moving out that I almost forgot to say goodbye and to acknowledge the dwelling which had been our home. As we sat there in the empty apartment it became clear that this was the end and the memories we had formed there began flooding my mind….. like pets, people, and times which were so closely tied to the place which was quickly becoming distant www.infinite-beyond.com “The Infinite and the Beyond” hosted by Chris Orapello 3 Episode #025– Magical Identity and foreign to me. I sat there is the empty space taking in the reality…. Then suddenly from above came the sounds of screaming, laughing, stomping and slamming doors… the neighbors above us had come home and a different set of memories were pounded into my mind. All the weekends and nights of noise. The absence of peace. Their lack of consideration for anyone who lived around them. They’ve interrupted our lives for the last time which made me look to Tara and say, “you know… let’s get the hell out of here. It’s time to start somewhere new.” And we left. After grabbing the last of what needed to be in the car, I made my way to the superintendent’s apartment and joyfully handed him our keys and set out to our new home. The new place is much quieter and very uplifting and despite having a smaller bathroom, we have a larger more spacious living room where Tara and I will be able to do yoga, which will be nice. We’re still trying to figure out where some things go, but it’s all has come together nicely. So, it would seem that this year is starting out with some great changes and new beginnings all of which are looking positive. I’m pretty happy about it so far actually. Unpacking and arranging has been fun and even frustrating at times with our next trick being where to place my altar. Now back before all this moving happened I had the great opportunity of speaking with occult author Taylor Ellwood. Segment: Interview with Taylor Ellwood Part 1 Commercial / Bumper Between the Earth and Stars with Oraia Helene Segway Hey welcome back hope you’ve been enjoying my interview with Taylor. He certainly was right about the unpacking in our new space. Slowly, but surely it’s becoming ours. Stay with us for part two where we’ll be discussing…. Before that, it’s now time for us to manifest into *dreaming sound* A Corner in the Occult. Segment: A Corner in the Occult: (approx. 1300-1500 words): Franz Bardon (Background Music: “Piano Quartet in g 3rd Movement by Mozart” performed by Linda Holzer) Hello and welcome to “A Corner in the Occult” Where we focus on one part or person from the history of occultism. In these regular segments, I touch upon many aspects of the occult and I hope to offer you something new or at least something to think about. The information presented is always done so in the best www.infinite-beyond.com “The Infinite and the Beyond” hosted by Chris Orapello 4 Episode #025– Magical Identity manner possible in regards to its content and accuracy depending on the available sources. There is a lot in occultism that one may never choose to look into, and here you have the opportunity to learn about something which you may have never bothered to investigate and oddly enough there are at least some people who may not be that aware of whom today’s topic is on… Stage magician, hermetic teacher and author Franz Bardon was born on December 1st of 1909 in the northern city of Opava located in what is now known as the Czech Republic. He was said to have been the first of 13 children and was reportedly the only boy. However unlike many individuals from occult history we have only limited information in regards to his life. During his young adult years, Franz worked as a stage performer under the name "Frabato". His performances were reportedly of a unique nature in that he displayed and explained the occult practices so common in that day. According to all reports, he was one of the few such performers who was not a charlatan as stated by Rawn Clark in his book A Bardon Companion. Franz’s father Victor Bardon was said to have been interested in Christian Mysticism and Hermeticism of which he studied in his spare time; an interest which more than likely had an undeniable influence on his son. Though according to discussion surrounding young Franz most explanations describe that at the age of fourteen he underwent a spiritual change where he became the mystic and guru of which his father sought and was said to have prayed for. Reports from this time say that a significant personality and intellectual change became noticeable in Franz and that he no longer was the child he had been, but was instead an enlightened being. Other stories elaborating on who he was not only include his miraculous birth where he came to life an hour after being stillborn, but also tell of his list of past incarnations where some proclaim that he had been Hermes Trimegistus, Tao Te Ching author Lao Tse, the famous prophet Nostradamus, the infamous Robert Fludd, Count Saint Germain, and even Apollonius of Tyana. Franz was even rumored to have discovered the legendary elixir of life. It would seem that many of the unusual stories surrounding Franz Bardon stem from his final book, Frabato The Magician which he (purportedly) left its entire completion and embellishment to his secretary, Otti Votavova. Though the details surrounding some of the stories may have been the result of embellishment on the part of Votavova one source suggests that Votavova may have been the actual author of the text itself. However, Dieter Ruggeberg, a strong advocate for the published legacy and teachings of Franz Bardon, insists that Votavova had a love for truth especially in regards to the life of Franz Bardon. Incidentally, Ruggeberg who is affiliated with most of Bardon’s current works, even included additional material in some of his later editions, like an unfinished manuscript that was meant for Bardon’s lost fourth book The Golden Book of Wisdom which was included as an appendix to Frabato the Magician. Bardon’s alleged last book that was released posthumously, Frabato the Magician is a novel, but which is also reportedly somewhat of an autobiography even though some of the details revealed in the book hint of www.infinite-beyond.com “The Infinite and the Beyond” hosted by Chris Orapello 5 Episode #025– Magical Identity fabrication or perhaps a loving embellishment on the part of the author, who, as mentioned previously, some suspect was actually Otti Votavova. One such tale mentioned in the book discusses Bardon’s conflict with the Nazis. As the story goes, he was taken into custody as a result of them finding letters he had exchanged with his friend Wilhelm Quintscherin which Wilhelm neglected to destroy at the recommendation of Bardon; This error then caused the two men to be captured and imprisoned. According to Dieter Ruggeberg, Bardon was offered high positions in the Third Reich by Adolf Hitler, but only in exchange for his help in winning the war with his magical abilities. Furthermore, Franz Bardon was expected to reveal to Hitler the location of the other ninetyeight lodges throughout the world. The lodges in question, as also mentioned in the book and other sources referring to Bardon’s life, were of a Satanic underground society which according to these sources Hitler was a member of the 99 Lodge. When Bardon refused to help he was tortured, imprisoned for three and a half years, and would eventually be sentenced to death. Though thankfully as the story continues in 1945 the prison he was being held in got bombed which enabled him to escape with the help of some fellow prisoners. However out of a bit of respectful cross referencing, confirming this tale becomes difficult as WWII Nazi Occult Historian Nicholas Goodrick Clarke author of “The Occult Roots of Nazism,” makes no mention of the 99 Lodge, Franz Bardon, or even Wilhelm Quintscherin, but makes brief mentions of British occultist Aleister Crowley who, although having no direct involvement with the Third Reich, was still mentioned by Clarke. Some of the specifics of this tale pertaining to Franz Bardon, his run in with the Nazi’s and Hitler does become curiously questionable when we refer to other sources. Yet despite this inconstancy we can’t argue that Franz Bardon wasn’t a teacher, in fact the three books he published during his life, Initiation into Hermetics, The Practice of Magical Evocation and The Key to the True Qabbalah are said to be a complete course in magick and personal spiritual development and are favored by many individuals. According to Bardon, he was directed by Divine Providence to reveal to humanity the meaning behind the first four Major Arcana of the Tarot of which he almost completed through his books as each text was meant to be an embodiment of each card. Initiation to Hermetics, pertaining to the magician card, first appeared in 1956 and focuses more on practice than theory and works towards developing the individual in a balanced manner emphasizing the equal development of the mental, astral, and physical selves through a 10 step system of which each step is divided into three sections one for each part of the person. His second book The Practice of Magical Evocation, associated with the High Priestess card, also appeared in 1956 and is an extension of his first book and goes into the specifics of evocation, instead of the often found “tothe-point” instructions commonly associated with so many grimoires. This text is a guide to the evocation of and communication with divine entities existing in the atmospheric zones surrounding the planets, stars, and moon as well as in the earth itself. www.infinite-beyond.com “The Infinite and the Beyond” hosted by Chris Orapello 6 Episode #025– Magical Identity His third book, The Key to the True Qabbalah, is rooted in the Empress card, and delves into the mysticism found in letters and numbers. In it he reveals a system based on the sounds of letters from the alphabet and presents a method of empowering letters and combining them using magical keys to create magical effects. Unfortunately though Franz Bardon passed away in 1958 before his fourth installment “The Golden Book of Wisdom,” written for the Emperor card, could be finished. On March 28 of 1958, Bardon was arrested in Opava during a communist purge. According to Votavova, authorities believed that Bardon was a spy for the West though other accounts state that he was accused of producing illegal medicines, not paying taxes on the alcohol that he used in his medicines, or that he wrote treasonous things about his country in a letter to Australia. Though tragically after being imprisoned for four months he suddenly died that same year from pancreatitis as a result of consuming a fatty bacon-based dish which some feel he may have done so on purpose to avoid further imprisonment. In his absence left behind his wife Marie, a daughter also named marie, his son Lumir, and a group of direct disciples. In memorial of Bardon, Otti Votavova writes On July 10th, 1958, Divine Providence allowed (the) perfected spirit (of Franz Bardon) to leave the earthly shell of the body which had served for his mission. Master Bardon left his body forever under unusual circumstances, as have so many high initiates on earth. Although the details regarding his life may have been blurred by love and adoration, the legacy he left behind found in the several books he published are an unmistakable fact. Although the world may never fully know the enlightened man who was known as Franz Bardon, at least those of you who were previously unaware of him are no longer, because Franz Bardon now has his own Corner in the Occult. This concludes this edition of A Corner in the Occult. Suggestions for this segment are welcomed and encouraged so please be sure to contact the show online via the show website or through the show forum. Stay with us for part 3 where we continue with this discussion and also get into the issues surrounding personal responsibility. This interview happened back in February and the more I thought about it and after discussing it with Tara the more I realized that I’m not an atheist magickian though sometimes I feel as if I am which when I was talking to Taylor was one of those times. Because to sit here now and to answer Taylor’s question, Yes, I have verifiable evidence that magick is real which means it’s not just in my head. Plus the Gods do talk to me, so why they hell do I have a tendency to default into thinking it’s all in my head? I have no idea. I guess I’m just some kind of pagan brat who doesn’t like to listen to his mother. *sigh* Also since I’ve been making the pieces for Eclectic Artisans I’ve been going through some things. When I work on them they feel like acts of devotion on their own. And oddly enough something in me pushed towards sculpting the Cernunnos statue. Originally I wanted to sculpt a God statue to compliment the Goddess one, but the more I worked the more inclined I was to make the God figure into Cernunnos. If you haven’t seen the Cernunnos statue that I have been working on, check out my Facebook page or the blog for the podcast to see what I have been sculpting for Eclectic Artisans which will be available for purchase in the near future. But before we meet back up with Taylor I have a letter that I would like to read. www.infinite-beyond.com “The Infinite and the Beyond” hosted by Chris Orapello 8 Episode #025– Magical Identity Listener Letters (Background Music: “No More Hectic Days” by Alexandre Falcao) Anne Marie from California wrote, Dear Chris I found your podcast about a month ago. I am gingerly making my way through your episodes, in hopes that they will not be discontinued by the time I catch up to the present. Your show is outstanding: the perfect mix of insight, humor, and openness. Please, please keep the episodes flowing! They mean a lot to me, and obviously have the same effect all around the world. Love, Anne marie (Flowing I shall do and I’ve decided to pursue monthly shows, being every 4 weeks as I think the regularity is one of the missing elements from the show.) I’ve decided to do monthly shows. I’m just not sure what date I will be sticking with. Or maybe I’ll just shoot for every 4 weeks so that actual date will vary slightly every month. Segment: The Essence of Magick Series (TEoMS): Magickal Names (Background Music: “Calling Peace” by Alexandre Falcao) (Audio clips: Gerald Gardner and Patricia Crowther chanting “The Witches Rune;” Aleister Crowley “Excerpts from the Gnostic Mass;” An interview with Gerald Gardner, early 1960’s) …It is a secret and you will be taught. From the basic to the complex all will be revealed. Welcome to the Essence of Magick Series… echoing forth from The Infinite and The Beyond. Magickal Names Found in many traditions and religions of the world, is the practice of taking on a new name and in some, like the Native American tradition an individual may actually change their name several times in their life as they grow and change themselves. Throughout our lives we experience different phases of being. When we are born, a name is bestowed upon us as an acknowledgement of our significance and value to our parents. Friends and partners name us as well, out of their endearment for us. Bullies attempt to rob us of our sense of self with the use of a name or many names that are meant to induce a sense of shame in who we are and as adults we take on different names and titles at times to fulfill different social roles. The names we adopt throughout our lives are often done out of obligation, personal responsibility, and even acceptance. In many cases these names are not chosen, but instead are given or offered to us as a result of merit and accomplishment like in the receiving of a promotion. But in the case of something more personal, such as a religious, spiritual, or esoteric name, we are permitted, in most cases, the opportunity to choose this name for ourselves. Such a name not only enables us to take on a new persona in regards to our faith and practice, but the use of it marks the beginning of a new part of who we are as well. Dawning or birthing a new person from our own being. www.infinite-beyond.com “The Infinite and the Beyond” hosted by Chris Orapello 9 Episode #025– Magical Identity In ritual magick systems a name taken by a practitioner functions more as title or statement of which were often meant to enhance or infuse the work of the magickian with a theme or a goal. For example in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Aleister Crowley took the name “Perdurabo” which meant “I will endure to the end” and if you recall Paul Foster Case took the name “Perseverantia” which meant “I will persevere” when he was initiated into the Alpha et Omega. In paganism we often hear about several types of names such as public names, religious names, and even unspeakable names only known to the Gods themselves. For example the craft name of Gerald Gardner was “Scire,” the name used by Doreen Valiente was “Ameth,” and some pagan authors such as Starhawk use their craft names as pseudonyms for their books as magickal names do offer a degree of anonymity on the part of the user which is why many festivals require a legal name from attendees upon registration. I myself have a magickal name that came to me one day, but I choose to keep it semi private and have not used in on this show. Though most of time it is only used by the God and Goddess when they speak to me. (Incidentally, some of you may have noticed that I podcast under my legal name instead of using a pseudonym, this was a decision I consciously made in the beginning because I felt that if I was stepping up to represent myself as a pagan then I will do so completely. Using one’s legal name in such a public and slightly controversial manner is not to be done lightly, and it’s not for everyone. I chose to bite the bullet years ago and I continue to do so with my role as a pagan in this world.) Taking on a new name is not only freeing or inspiring, but it is a wonderful way to embark upon a new path and illustrate to one’s self the seriousness of such an undertaking. One’s magickal name can be a reflection of who they are, defining a key quality of their faith or person. It can be of a deity that one feels a kinship with and of have devoted themselves to. Or it can embody qualities and aspects that one would like to align themselves with, in the hope that their name will help create desired changes in their person; making the act of naming one’s self an act of magick in itself. Afterall, a name is first and foremost a word which can be used to not only label, but also to evoke or invoke qualities into someone or something while at the same time not naming something may cause it vanish from existence as only things which are valued and acknowledged have names. Finding one’s magickal name is often seen as a daunting task by some, but for others their name comes to them without a second thought, yet there are some who wear names like hats and try many different names out until they find one that fits. However, a fitting name may not make its presence known to the practitioner until a certain amount of introspection has been done and self-knowledge obtained and even then difficultly may continue to present itself until that fateful day when one’s name suddenly appears in their mind while no other name felt as accurate or true to their being. www.infinite-beyond.com “The Infinite and the Beyond” hosted by Chris Orapello 10 Episode #025– Magical Identity Some sources suggest that one use numerology to help find a name that fits by adding up one’s full birthday until they are left with a single number and then taking their desired name and converting it to numbers using a familiar system or language which contain numerical equivalents such as Hebrew or Greek. While some websites offer magickal name generators of which I truly hope are mostly for amusement because for some reason Twig Quiet Fawn and Lord Birch Iron RaStar, Third Degree just doesn’t do it for me. Names are a very powerful thing as alluded to by the tale of rumpelstiltskin where knowledge of his name gave the miller’s daughter power over him. Even in certain forms of magick names are used to convey authority and power to stir and apply energy as well as to call and evoke spirits. The power in the act of naming can be found in several traditions of the world as in Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam creation itself was spawned by the utterance of a single name by the creator. One may find that as their spiritual a religious practices grow, the Gods may even in turn give one a name of which to personally refer to them by during a private spiritual moment such as in a prayer or during a ritual or may even refer to the practitioner in a particular manner on a consistent basis whether they like the name or not. Finally, the subconscious effect found in the act of taking on a new name shifts one’s identity and their sense of self which infuses the practitioner with much the same influence and effect as any altar decoration, tool, incantation, chant, mantra, gesture or any other element found in a magickal rite. Making them even more of a key component in any ritual or magickal endeavor. In essence, a magickal name completes our identity in regards to our religious and magickal pursuits and helps to make us who we are in the world as a religious and magickal individual. It instills us with a power over ourselves while creating changes within and without our being; allowing who we are to manifest in the world as we see fit because the act of naming is also an act of conjuration. This concludes this edition of the Essence of Magick. Suggestions for this series are welcomed and encouraged and you can do so on the show website or through the show forum.
