Request for Proposal: Health Care Cooperative Ethics Training
Summer 2009
09
Statement of Participation in Project 2
It’s June 1, a whole week before the semester starts and the instructor sends us an email about the class and asks us to pick teams to work on the project. I really didn’t know what to expect coming into this class but I was surprised to be contacted by the instructor early. I think this is when I realized that the class was going to be a whole lot of work in not a whole lot of time.
The purpose of this class was to respond to a Request For Proposal (RFP) to design eLearning ethics training for a fictional health care company. I’ve never had the opportunity to respond to a RFP for any purpose before. There were a lot of times when I felt really uncomfortable in this class. Not that bad uncomfortable feeling, rather that I’m learning something new and I’m out of my comfort zone uncomfortable. Honestly, it’s not a bad place to be but it can be scary at times.
My team made a huge difference. I worked with a great team of ladies who were always going to go that extra mile. Sometimes there is a little fear involved with picking from a group of people in an online class that you don’t really know too well.
Danielle Beck and I are friends and work at the same company but Liesa and Kerry were unknowns. They turned out to be fantastic. We worked well together and I think that shows in our end result.
One thing I learned from this class was the importance of connections. All four of us tapped into other professionals in the eLearning and Instructional Design fields when we couldn’t find answers to questions that came up during the project.
Without some of their advice, I think we would have been lost at times. If you aren’t planning these types of projects on a daily basis you don’t know how long it’s going to take to complete all of the tasks or how much things cost. Their insight was invaluable to the team.
I also learned that I underestimate myself. I remember back to Scott’s email on June
1 and thinking to myself, this class is going to be way too much. Here I sit on August
1 after giving our final presentation to the client thinking, wow it was a lot of work but the journey was worth it! I learned a lot in two months. With my team, I did a lot of work in two months too. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
Unfortunately, I’m not in corporate training at the moment but I plan to be as soon as I finish school. I know this experience will help me in my current job because I feel much more confident to tackle big projects like this.
There were 5 phases of the project. Below are the tasks that I was responsible for and completed during the project.
