Fall is upon us, and with it, a flurry of activity has begun. It’s time to go back to
school, roast chiles for winter, and get ready for the holidays. We’ve been busy,
too. Our new online registration system is humming along after a few tweaks. We
had almost 300 people register online in the summer and we’re hoping to beat that
number this fall. Visit www.sfcc.edu and click on the “Browse or Register for a
Continuing Education Class” button in the bottom right corner. Explore the site,
use the search box, maybe even sign up for something! All the class information
is right at your fingertips – price, description, location, supplies needed and even
how many seats are still available. If you need help, give us a call and we’ll walk
you through it.
New this fall are classes such as Coping with Pet Loss, Discover Your
Personal Brand, Belly Dancing, and Composition and Design in Art.
Continue your journey today.

IYENGAR YOGA
Developed by yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar more than 60 years ago, Iyengar yoga promotes strength, flexibility,
endurance and balance through coordinated breathing and poses that require precise body alignment.
Equipment like blankets, straps and blocks help the less flexible and also distinguishes Iyengar from other types
of yoga. Although Iyengar incorporates the traditional postures, or asanas, that make up the broader category
of hatha yoga, the props revolutionized yoga by enabling everyone – even the elderly, sick, and disabled, to
practice. Because of its slow pace, attention to detail, and use of props, Iyengar yoga can be especially good if
you’re recovering from an injury. No class Nov. 29.

SOUTHWEST
EXPLORATIONS
Travel near or far for a wonderful exploration of the
Southwest. We also teach about the region in a classroom,
where we look at ancient and contemporary cultures.
SENSATIONAL NEW MEXICO MURDERS
New Mexico did not become a U.S. state for many
years. One reason for this was the violence. The West
was already known as the Wild West. In New Mexico,
violence mixed with economics, greed and politics to
become part of the culture. And the culture of violence
lasted much longer in New Mexico than elsewhere.
Among the many grisly murders, we will discuss John
Tunstall leading to the murder of Lincoln County
Sheriff Brady, the Territorial Supreme Court Justice in
La Fonda, the misadventures of the Archbishop Lamy’s
nephew, the shooting of the Santa Fe sheriff and more.

This 7.5 mile, round-trip hike explores the overall
ecology of the upper reaches of the Pajarito Plateau to
the edge of the mountainous rim of the Caldera. On
our way to Canada Bonita, we walk through an edge of
the Cerro Grande fire into the Las Conchas fire path of
June 2011. A primary driver of biodiversity in the Jemez
Mountains, periodic fires have shaped the landscape for
millennia. Students will see the beginning of changes
to the habitats and learn the importance of refuges and
micro-habitats.

Las Conchas fire in June 2011. We can see the response
of these habitats and ecosystems to the various burn
intensities, from mild to severe. We’ll also see the

THE OJITO WILDERNESS AREA
The Ojito Wilderness Area is a unique geologic
landscape within an hour’s drive from both Santa Fe and
Albuquerque. On this journey you will explore on foot
the spectacular San Ysidro anticline, where Mesozoic
rock layers have been folded into a dome structure, the
core of which has been breached by erosion, exposing
a variety of tilted, colorful rocks. A circular hike of
approximately 4 miles takes you into the anticline and
back along its eastern edge. The elevation gain/loss on
the hike is approximately 500 feet.

northern New Mexico. Along the mesa’s eastern slope
is the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph site, on private land and
containing more than 6,000 petroglyphs dating from
Archaic (5500 B.C.) to modern times. The site is famous
for its many shield figures, abundant flute-playing
animals and historic images from Spanish settlers.
Students are asked to make a $20 donation toward the
upkeep of the petroglyph area.

PECOS AND GLORIETA, INCLUDING
A GREER GARSON HOUSE TOUR
HIDDEN PASSAGE TO
COPPER CANYON, ABIQUIU
Begin your class learning about the Pecos Pueblo, the
Civil War at Glorieta and Hollywood star Greer Garson.
After a brief overview by historian and tour leader
Peter Sinclaire, everyone will board the college van for
the Glorieta-Pecos region. Visit the Pecos Pueblo and
enjoy the picnic lunch you brought. The Pecos National
Monument Visitor Center features a film narrated by
Greer Garson about the region. After touring the pueblo,
students will visit the Forked Lightning Ranch where
Greer Garson lived for many years with her husband, E.
E. Fogelson. This fun-filled day is sure to be entertaining
and educational.
This one-day hiking adventure will explore a unique,
hidden canyon in the Abiquiu area. A 3.5-mile round trip
hike will take us through a small canyon that exposes
brilliantly colored rock layers at the boundary between the
Rio Grande Rift and the Colorado Plateau. We then ascend
400 feet to an overlook of Copper Canyon – a broad,
majestic canyon well off the tourist trails. Wonderful
photography opportunities with superb geology are
in every direction. Field discussions will focus on the
changing shape of the landscape in this region of northern
New Mexico, as persistent geologic and erosional forces
have sculpted the landscape over time.

views of White Rock Canyon, the Jemez Mountains
and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The extinct Otowi
Peak volcano erupted a variety of material, including
explosive steam-magma blasts, cone-building cinder
and fluid pahoehoe basalt. We will explore the eruption
history of this volcano, as well as discuss
the volcanic history of the Cerros del Rio
field. This moderate-rated trail requires

geology surrounding the ancestral pueblo of Tsi’ping
in the northern Jemez Mountains. The trail to Tsi’ping
is approximately three miles (round trip) with an
elevation gain/loss of approximately 800 feet. Students
