A CHRISTMAS CAROL
From the ghost story by Charles Dickens
21 December 2010 – 8 January 2011, various times and prices, see www.stables.org for details
“You’ve never seen anything like me before!” says the Ghost of Christmas Present. Strangeface
have created an amazing adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic ghost story A Christmas Carol.
Dramatic masks, fascinating puppets and a magical set combine to create an entrancing heady
brew, both moving and comic. This festive performance is suitable for age 7+ and includes the
company’s ever-popular “backstage tour”, a chance to take a close-up look at the puppets, set
and instruments and meet the performers after the show.
Strangeface have been touring nationally since 2001 and are equally at home in grand old
theatres as rural halls in the Highlands. The company’s distinctive style blends quick changes,
mask and puppet play with original live music and spooky soundscapes. A masked chorus leads
the characters through the hidden doors and windows of the higgledy-piggeldy set and their
conversations with the audience make each performance unique.
What the press said about Strangeface’s production of A Christmas Carol…
“All the ingredients of a medieval morality play with a Tim Burton-esque touch… Made the hair
on the back of my neck prickle with delight.” Total Theatre
“First Class.” Metro
“An unusual and unexpected treat. There are plenty of laughs… My two boys were full of
questions and insights on the journey back home. It really got them thinking.” Sunderland

Haydn Piano Trio No.18 in A, Mozart Piano Trio in E K.542, Tchaikovsky Piano Trio in
A minor Op.50 In Memory of a Great Artist
Three world-class chamber musicians come together to do what they love most; play music.
Their passion for music is clear in their hugely entertaining, high-energy performances. Here they
perform Haydn’s spirited and lively Piano Trio in A and Mozart’s Trio in E, a gentle piece of simple
beauty, alongside Tchaikovsky’s emotive Piano Trio in A minor. Tchaikovsky dedicated this piece
to the memory of his teacher and close friend, pianist and composer Nikolai Rubinstein.

Programme includes: Handel Trio Sonata No.2 in D minor, Rameau Piece for
Harpsichord, Vivaldi Trio Sonata in D minor Op.1 No.12 Follia
As one of the UK’s most prominent period instrument ensembles, the Hanover Band endeavour
to achieve the most authentic sound possible, giving audiences a fascinating insight into the
sound world of 18th and 19th century music. Here the group performs music by some of the
Baroque’s most celebrated composers, including the first pieces Handel wrote, alongside some
lesser-known gems.

to well-known repertoire. Here they perform Mozart’s famous Dissonance Quartet, which takes its
nickname from the tense harmonies that open the piece. The energetic and dramatic Quartet in
G minor is considered to be the milestone at which Nielsen reached his prime as a string quartet
composer. In Beethoven’s late, great Quartet in E flat each part has equal importance, creating a
totally new sound world to that of his previous quartets.

most flamboyant poets, Torquato Tasso.
