(R 6) Students will find specific lines from Chapter 2 that illustrate the idea of the narrator as a canary in a cage. (R 1, R2) Other chapters to be considered for close reading are Chapter 7 “Who Speaks for Afghanistan” and Chapter 4 “Massacres and Miracles” Research on culture of Middle East- Students will find at least two credible websites that give information on the country, the culture, the Taliban regime and the takeover of Kabul, treatment of women, ideas of Islamic faith including Sharia Law, Koran, Jihad Students will create a PowerPoint or other multimedia presentation to show their research. (SL 2, SL 4, SL5, SL6) Students will evaluate speakers during presentations using a peer evaluation rubric. (SL 3) Students will write an informative essay on each element from their research. (W2, W4, W5, W6, W7, W8, W10) Students will participate in peer editing of their essay for conventional grammar and mechanics. (L 2c) Students will participate in a reflective class discussion about the ideas they have presented and the cultural setting of the book.
